Ahahahahaha, yet another reason why I would never, ever, in a bajillion years go with AT&T. They announced revamped data plans to go with the new iPhone. $15 for 200MB (with another $15 if you go over for up to 400MB) and $25 for 2GB (and $10 for every GB thereafter).

Those of you on AT&T now: do not ever give up your unlimited data plans. These prices are lunacy and the average user will consume a lot more than 2GB in a month.

AT&T just doesn't get it.

I dispute this. They have customers locked in as the only vendor in a rather significant geographic area of a device that uses a disproportionately large amount of data for the services provided. This approach lets them make more money. What don't they get??

Howdy Box. :-:

732 is a fine area code. Luddites. @:-)

I agree with sbm12. AT&T has learned the hard way, and, I believe, is doing what every other wireless provider will end up doing too - once they get the phones/toys everyone wants :) No way Verizon will just let millions of users loose on their network in an unlimited way :)

This is no different than bag fees, as far as I can tell... Don't have to love them, it's just the way it is. Want to pay less? Bring less crap with you.

Morning Box!

With Android phones outselling iPhones, I'd say AT&T has a lot to lose.

I also think the new data rates signal the beginning of the end for AT&T being the exclusive carrier for the iPhone.

Good evening, Box. Lots of driving today. Checked out a very good contender for the wedding cake bakery; I prefer the red velvet with cream cheese while both of my sisters went for the chocolate with raspberry ganache (which was, admittedly, also tasty).

Went with 2 layers red velvet and amaretto sum'n or another down here for the upcoming(soon to be broke) gayla

Good morning box from 919
US to PHL and MSP are in my future today

speaking of area codes and phones-my palm used to show where the call was coming from(there's a program for that) and I thought I had found a solution for my BB. Tried a program called iCallManager but it works only some of the time. Anyone know of anything else for BB?

While my lack of ability to spell this morning is not good. I do believe when one looks up the word smell on dictionary.com and the first thing one sees is a textual Summer's Eve ad is way wrong!!

If that B-word is as in "MO," then that is punishment, a large reason being that you can't get there by air! A smorgasbord of yesterday's favorites, and you have to drive from Springfield. I just can't understand it.

As someone who's had the "good fortune" to spend a fair amount of time in SGF for work, I should note that SGF is the "Springfield-Branson Regional Airport".

Kind of like how RFD calls themselves Chicago-Rockford now.

Do you have a source for this claim? My iPhone is on WiFi a lot, but my phone tells me I've only used about 400MB of data since I last reset the counter in early January. AT&T's press release seems to agree by making the claim that 98% of their smartphone users use less than 2GB of data per month (tethering would likely skew this number a bit). I'm actually looking forward to the slightly lower data charges.

I am patiently waiting for eight days hence, when supposedly the Tour2 hits VZW stores. Unless something happens to change my mind, that is my next phone.

Morning, Box.

I think Apple will push away from ATT mainly due to the problems that ATT has experienced with its network in certain areas. Apple doesn't need the bad publicity.

I am with ATT and really have no issues with them. I have a smartphone with an unlimited data plan that can tether and a 20% discount through a university I went to. Makes ATT an economical choice for me. Would love to switch to an Iphone or Droid but that presents an issue of getting a new plan or an expensive unlocked phone.

I tend to average around 250-350MB/month, with heavy months getting up to 500MB. My baseline usage (assuming I do nothing with the phone besides basic e-mail) would be around 100-125MB/mo, based on a few days of "austerity" usage in Canada before I got my $65-20% unlimited int'l plan.

I'm all for companies making money. However, in this particular case, I believe AT&T has moved from making money to ripping people off. While they have entered into lucrative deals with Apple to be the only carrier selling the iPhone, and because Apple somehow predicts fashion sensibilities, they are in a prime position to reap the rewards of such a deal. However, their execution is poor.

Instead of expending the capital to build a robust network to handle the data usage of these devices they're so proud to offer, they choose to charge such obscene prices for data usage so as to discourage people from using their devices as they so desire. Instead of touting their iPhone exclusivity, when Verizon came out with the ads explaining how they absolutely owned AT&T in all manner of 3G coverage, AT&T responds by saying their network is faster. Sure, it's faster, in the very small areas with HSPA 7.2. Verizon and Sprint have rolled out EVDO Rev. A in almost all markets across the country. They spent the capital to make a better network; AT&T did not.

What AT&T did is sign an exclusivity agreement and then decide to punish the customer for using the network instead of making the network usable for the customer. Sprint and Verizon have slightly more reasonable limits on data usage (though they lock their phones down in other ways that are ). Without that exclusivity agreement, AT&T would be in a world of hurt because of their policies toward their customers.

While AT&T has made some strides in fixing their network problems, it is the attitude from AT&T that I find unpalatable, and I don't believe that their ability to make money through those practices justifies it.

I suppose at the end of the day, all of the wireless phone companies are whores. I just prefer whores who don't regularly assault their customers.

But that's just me. :)
