I grew up in the small area of Maryland that was solely 301, then 301/410, now 240/301/410/443 with two more reserved. I have family members in the same county (Calvert) with four different area codes.

To me, any area code lacking a 0 or 1 as the second digit is tantamount to a third world phone number. I was in NJ when the beloved 609 was driven off the Shore by the barbaric 732. It was the beginning of the end for me.
We threw out so much stationery and business cards those years because of those d*mn changes. |

I will hold on to my 609 cell number for as long as humanly possible. ^ I'm old enough () to remember when NJ had two area codes: you were either 609 or 201, and that was it.

In other news:
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/93/notsogood.gif Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue. |

I would either be drunk or dropping them off if I was her.

Good Morning Box |
Luncheon today for the last day of a co-worker with 34 years. Another involuntary severance. It's getting to be a weekly event:(

The 321 area code was the first "vanity" assignment that was made. At the time the folks on the space coast really wanted it in a bid to have something cool to associate with the phone numbers in the region. Looks like it has gone down hill since then. I used to know the location of most area codes. I did OK learning many of the new ones for a while but there are too many now for me to keep track of.
I bought a couple lines for company cell phones back in 2005 from ATT and I was able to get 212 numbers. We gave them back after a few months when we were done testing the devices. I have a 212 from Vonage that I need to figure out how to port elsewhere. G'morning, Box. Looking to be another day of  out there. |

Nobody who works for DL involved in that decision, certainly.

There's a funny old Calvin Trillin column that suggests that area codes are assigned on the basis of assigning similar codes (e.g., 718 and 818) on the basis of distance by someone he called the Far Away Man. |
Good , box.
