yadda yadda yadda, I missed my flight.

Well, now, that'll teach you not to be so cheeky to TSA staff .....:p

Same here, twice in 16 years.

Happy belated Birthday!

No reason to. It's one of the best walking cities in the world. Parking is also in short supply and if you can find it, expensive. Why waste the time and money? A car in San Francisco is nothing but a hassle. You're better off on foot and Muni.

I agree, but there is something really cool about driving up Van Ness and Lombard Sts (101) towards the Bridge, with all the old 50s motels.

Landed a nice new CTS for the second consecutive rental out of IAH.

Got to love National right now. Guess I should get some more of these reservations booked.

Almost had to take an ALCO car (Grand Marquis) at PHX this week, but noticed a Subaru Forrester at the last minute.

Good Morning Box

I think history disagrees with you. Sure it's systemic, but history has shown that when things become too complex and the classes become too far apart, something snaps that brings things back to equilibrium.

Simplifying the tax code would certainly get rid of a few "classes", but it would also create more revenue for the government, in doing so however, it would make a new set of people eligible for taxation.

There's actually a strain of historical theory that indicates such a system is intentional by design, rather than accidental, and that it was nurtured in 1st World economies after WWII to avoid the sort of social/political strife that was endemic in Western economies during the Great Depression. The name of the various BBC Documentary Series addressing the topic escapes me at the moment, but I'll get it from my friend who originally gave me the mpegs of the shows. "The Ascent of Money," hosted by Niall Ferguson, was one of the series, but it didn't dwell as much on the social engineering aspects of our current political/economic system.

Conference Call about a product turned into a sales pitch for a product none of us want.

I said TST earlier, but meant to say Kowloon. You can take Airport Express to the Kowloon station and get the free shuttle to the Sheraton (or $15hkd taxi).

I forgot about the free shuttle option ^

I remember the BBC Series, but can't think of the name.

Shall we discuss all of this on Saturday?

Anglo Large Clawed Otter Apr 20, 2010 10:36 am

Andrew Marr's "History of Modern Britain" is another of the series. It delves heavily into the social engineering aspects that went into rebuilding Britain after WWII, and is quite good. There's a third BBC series I can't put a name to at the moment, that investigates modern methods of social/economic planning and control, and was absolutely fascinating. Its historical analysis of the rise of modern psychiatry, psychology and marketing was very interesting. Some of the interviews were conducted with people who had been instrumental in applying psychological theory to consumers and political groups (from PR Gurus to former Rand Corporation employees).

I would do Le Meridien. You won't get a suite, but for 9 hours, doesn't matter. You'll get there before midnight, so can still get some free drinks in. They have a very nice gift from the mgr. in addition to the plat gift and you get a very nice breakfast buffet in the a.m. that begins at 6 if I recall correctly. Your issue with Le Meridien is transportation that late but you could be okay.

Email [email protected] and see what transporation options exist that late.

You can do Airport Express to the Sheraton (transferring to bus or taxi from the TST Airport Express station)

I emailed the LM yesterday and the shuttle stops running at 11:30 PM, just an hour after I arrive in HKG :(

I guess I would be paying about $75 for a taxi from HKG to the hotel if I selected the LM. I have both the LM and Sheraton oh hold for now.

If it really is just a crash-pad there are plenty of places way cheaper (and still clean/nice) that are available. No, you won't get the few points but there is an opportunity cost there. How much are those points really worth?

Free drinks for plats until midnight in a very decent bar. That works for me. We'll agree to disagree.

I haz just outed myself as a History and Documentary nerd. I guess I need something to balance out the beer. :-:
