It's good to know....

It's good to know that I'm not the only nut case, hmm, concerned frequent flyer around here. It's kind of AA with frequent flyer miles.

My name is Thomas and I live in Norfolk, Virginia (ORF). Norfolk is home base for the last 10 years. I tried several airlines before (US Airways, Delta, Lufthansa) before settling in with United Airlines. It works best for my trip across the country and across the Atlantic.

Southwest Airlines which also serves the Norfolk airport, sent a rep to our office to talk about their company. I have refused to fly with them. As part of an Q & A session afterwards, I asked, "What kind of entertainment (XM Radio) do you have on board?" It was fairly embarrassing being told that there is no entertainment system on SW flights.

I have been a 1K flyer with United for the last 3 years and it will take me another 5 years at this rate to become a million miler. Like many of us, I have had good and very bad flights. While lost luggage doesn't bother me anymore, being taking for granted pushes all my buttons.

For right now, I'm still enjoying my time in the friendly skies. Hope to see you all soon.

Hello!

I live close to Washington DC and am one of the many thousands of attorneys therein. My non-business travel includes trips to pretty exotic places like Tibet, Patagonia, and Svalbard. I have been viewing FlyerTalk for some time, but this is my first post. :D

One Pass Miles

I am recently retired and have miles in five different airlines. The biggest is Continental Airlines (118,000). My question is....Can I transfer these One Pass Miles to use for hotel rooms. There was a posting from about 10 years ago that said they tranferred One Pass Miles to Amtrak and then transferred the Amtrak Points to HHonors Points. I can't find anything on Continental's site that will let me transfer to a hotel....Is it possible to transfer One Pass Miles to use at any hotel????? JVR-Cornjerker

This is a cool forum

I've flown with all of the major carriers and the only thing of note, is that I love the Biscotti cookies on Delta flights. I fly about 6-8x a year and have done so for about 8 years. Also have flown to destinations like Rome, Italy - Berlin, Germany - Buenos Aires, Argentina - Dublin, Ireland, - Vancouver, Canada - Anchorage, Alaska, and pretty much all of the major cities in the USA from Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, La Guardia NYC, Columbus, Omaha, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, ....etc.....

I actually hate traveling. The people I meet make it worth it but not a big fan of changing scenery, I can see that on my computer any time.

Leyla A Dec 1, 2008 11:17 pm

Hello! I am new to the Flyertalk. I am starting my own marketing business and currently working with a client who is a travel agent - mainly travel to the Middle East and Turkey. I'd post their site but we're COMPLETELY re-doing their site and I will be writing their travel blog :)

I also have a personal blog http://www.sundaymorningsoliloquy.com where I talk about my life in Chicago. Getting hit by cabs, screaming at homeless people, etc.

I am an avid traveler. I've been around the world. IN FACT, I love nothing more than travel, dining and wine!

I am really excited to join this site.

i have no idea what that means

Welcome to FlyerTalk, James V Root Jr.

I would advise that you ask your question in the Continental OnePass forum. Once you post your question there, you should receive answers shortly thereafter.

Hello,
Philip here. I'm British, I live in Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean and I fly for holidays, going back to Europe and as a passion. Lucky enough to have my first First recently (round trip Mauritius Perth on Emirates) and am about to embark on a round Africa business class trip to visit various friends dotted around the continent. Thinking of doing a trip report on that.... good idea?

Welcome, however, one can tell you're new around these parts, as a veteran Flyertalker looks for more opportunities to fly, not fewer. ;)

Hi, I'm Ben, living in Boston, MA. I've been reading the FlyerTalk forums quite a lot before making decisions about FT programs (I'm *G on BM, *S on LH, and GLD on AA), booking rewards, the AA challenge etc. Today I've decided to write my first post. I'm flying mainly on the East coast and towards Europe. Best, Ben

zcat18 Dec 4, 2008 12:37 pm

I split my time between graduate school--pursuing a Ph.D. in organizational communication--and working for a large lobbying association based here in Chicago (for the moment, although my passion is academia, and that's where I'd like to land, from a career perspective). I began taking Chinese languge courses in college thinking that it would be an interesting way to fulfill a requirement, but fast-forward a number of years, and I now hold a master's degree in China studies, speak Mandarin at about a 10th-grade level, and have lived, worked, and conducted research in a number of Chinese cities.

Travel has been my passion since my first trip out of North America (to Paris and Amsterdam, as a 5-year-old), and I visit a minimum of one new country per year. By the time the second week in January rolls around, I'll have ventured to Costa Rica, Denmark (a return visit), Hungary, and the Czech Republic since mid-2008...not terribly impressive for FlyerTalk, but I like to think that I get around quite a bit for someone who isn't wealthy or powerful and doesn't travel for work. My ultimate travel goal is to join the Century Club (100 countries visited), and I'm just over 25% of the way there.

My favorite destinations thus far are Jerusalem, Venice, Beijing, Paris, Barcelona, and Cambodia. I'll be taking a 6-week leave of absence from work and school responsibilities next summer to backpack around India and Nepal--a trip that I've wanted to take for years and to which I am finally treating myself.

I've been reading various travel blogs for quite some time, but believe it or not, I just stumbled upon FlyerTalk about four months ago, and I've been posting ever since.

I look forward to continuing to get to know other FT'ers, and thanks for welcoming us newbies into your great community!

lurker says hi!

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking here for a while and decided it's time to introduce myself.

I am an American now living in the UK. I'm an academic, and currently in the second year of my PhD. I'm a qualitative sociolinguist/linguistic anthropologist/discourse analyst, interested in cabin/flight crew communication onboard a commercial (as opposed to private) aircraft, and cabin crew identity construction. My interest stems from my background as an anthropologist and about a decade working in the commercial airline industry in the US. I'm always interested in talking about my research; feel free to PM me for further information

When not working on my research, I love being outdoors, doing pretty much anything: running, walking, horse riding. I'd say biking but I don't have a bike at the moment! I also enjoy playing World of Warcrack -- oops, I mean Warcraft ;) ; discovering delicious red wines, particularly Malbecs; travelling to new destinations; learning; watching far too much TV for my own good; and snooker.

Looking forward to discovering the FT community!

Hamilton guy Dec 5, 2008 11:28 am

My name is Patrick and I am in Market Conduct Compliance for a major Canadian life insurance company. I am based out of Toronto, but live in Hamilton about 60 km west of Toronto. I just started with the company earlier this year and my job involves extensive travel to the far east where we have insurance oeprations (five trips this year, usually CX to HKG and then onto whichever operation I am visiting).

I am married, no kids, a 21/2 year old dog named Rex who is a pound puppy that we got from the local animal shelter when he was six months old.

I enjoy boating and have a 34 ft express cruiser, which we have just moved to Lake Erie for next year's boating season.

update on travel

Wife and I are retired. I traveled alot on business and still have United miles. United was very good to us for years when I was a frequent flier. nice upgrades and super personal service. of course that is all gone now, but i am still loyal to United and used to use a Visa card to rackup United mileage. Now i am using a Marriott rewards card as hotel stays are more important. we charge everything we can on Visa cards and always pay it off monthly. Seems to be a good way to get miles or hotels. Look forward to an exchange of information to make travel more rewarding. CHEERS!

Time to make my first post

Greetings,

I have been a member for some time, and have never posted. Time to fix that.

I'm an Australian who has been living in San Jose, CA for 10 years or so. I'm a consultant for Hewlett Packard, working out of the Cupertino site in Silicon Valley. I'm a solution architect for the design and installation of VoIP Contact Centres based around the Cisco product set, so I'm often engaged on long projects at customer sites, typically flying out of San Jose for points east on Sunday, coming home on Friday night. I certainly rack up the miles, almost all on United Airlines.

I've been 1K on United for the last 6 years, though San Jose is very competitive for upgrades - we have a lot of 1Ks here, as you can imagine. I almost always stay at Marriott hotels, so am Platinum with them. I fly to Brisbane each year to spend Christmas with my mum and brothers and sisters, and travel to Europe on business a couple of times a year on average. I have made the long haul to Bangalore out of SFO on two occasions. Most of my flights are out of San Jose, with the international flights out of SFO. Strangely enough for a Bay Area resident, I have never flown out of, or into, Oakland airport.

I'm not much interested in participating in Mileage Runs, as I don't seem to have much trouble getting 100,000 miles under my belt each year. Although I don't need MRs, I find some fascination in reading posts on that topic. My main area of interest here is probably in the United Mileage Plus forum.

Outside of work, my main interests are in high-end stereo systems (a.k.a hifi) and am a steady correspondent at Audio Asylum www.audioasylum.com and Steve Hoffman's Forum http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums. I often get to CES in Las Vegas each year and spend way too much money on CDs and goodies for the home system. Don't ask me about home theatre, though. ;)

Apologies to any flyers who come after me early in the month - I've always finished the crossword in the Mileage Plus magazine, and I leave it there just to annoy you. ;)

I hope I can contribute something of interest to my fellow travellers. It's going to be tough though - FlyerTalk has way too many members.

Regards,
Geoff

My name is Becky. I've lived in Portland, OR for 10 yrs and Wichita, KS before that. I work in the technology field maintaining several computer labs in an educational setting. I love to travel and enjoy finding travel deals on the internet. I belong to several ff programs but have enough points in only one for any trips. With the economy the way it is, I plan on using information from this site to utilize ff programs better so I can afford to travel in the future.

I enjoy flying. Have been flying by myself since I was 8 or 9 (granted it was 2 or 3 years of unattended minor status before truly alone), most of it flying from upper michigan through ORD and on to DFW and back.

Find it hard to post on this site for some reason. I guess it's since most of the posts are fairly on topic, and I'm used to sites where it isn't. But I rotate through forums from time to time and will go back and forth.

New members Dave & Linda Burns here. We live in Northern Virginia; I work in DC for the federal government and Linda is a government contractor. I'm a Premier Exec member with UAL due to a fair amount of job related travelling, primarily to Europe. We've got five kids and since the youngest graduated from college back in 2001 and left the nest we made a pact to get out of Dodge at least every three or four months and visit someplace, preferably warm, before we need walkers or wheelchairs. Thankfully, Dulles Airport is pretty close by. Looking forward to surfing the site and seeing what you folks have to say. And oh yeah, ended up here after hearing about the forum on the Timeshare Users Group (TUG) site since we have timeshares here in Virginia, in Mexico, and the Caribbean. Glad to have found this site and looking forward to being members.

Thanks,

Welcome to FlyerTalk, scottleibo.

Before anyone can assist you, in which airline frequent flier program do you have miles which you would like to use?

If it is Northwest Airlines, for example, you may want to go to the Northwest WorldPerks forum to post your questions.

Good luck, and I hope your questions are answered completely, satisfactorily and quickly.

CMHChrisO Dec 15, 2008 6:49 pm

Hello from Chris O.

Hello All -

A friend of mine who is a self-proclaimed "mileage junkie" referred me to this sight. Well, I mentioned that I found an answer to something about flying on this message board and he exclaimed "FlyerTalk.com!" I am hooked. I am based out of CMH.

I am currently Silver Elite on NW and have been since the beginning of November. The amazing thing is that I started concentrating primarily on NW the very tail-end of August and reached Silver in a little over two months.

I am the director of entertainment for a restaurant and bar company based out of CLT. We have locations near DFW, CVG, DTW, RIC, PVD, BWI/IAD, CLT, and GRR. I have earned most of my status in segments as opposed to miles. I did some estimates and I fly roughly 40 weekends out of the year. If I fly roughly 65% of my flights on NW/DL, I will reach Platinum by the end of the year. I absolutely LOVE this website, although I wish there were some sort of compendium for all of the abbreviations in the vernacular. If there is one floating around here, please direct me to it.

Looking forward to getting to Platinum!

Chris O.

By no means is it complete, but here is the FlyerTalk Glossary to assist you with the abbreviations.

Welcome to FlyerTalk, CMHChrisO.
