Catch22returns Oct 29, 2007 5:59 am

I originally joined Flyertalk back in 2002/3 under the alias Catch22 and have been riding an African desk since my posting days, which is to say I haven't done any flying for the past 3 years outside of South Africa. However I'd lurk the boards once in a while for some armchair travelling and to keep up on trends. Attempts this year to repost under the old username went ignored and emails to Admin were unanswered, so I've reincarnated under this username. I live and work between Nelspruit and Cape Town, South Africa and I travel often into Mozambique. If any flyertalkers desire Mozambique insider info, please feel free to pm me.

I wanted to to say hi to everyone on this forum. I have been browsing the forum for a while and finally joined. ^

I have several accounts Citi Platium Amex, Citi Professional MC, Bank of America Amex, Continental One pass silver, and Marriott Gold.

I hope to have a good time and find out more about other cards that I never heard of like the never ending Chairman Card thread ..

I found this forum a short while ago, but just found this thread now.

I have finally started to admit that I really am middle aged. I live in MN with my husband and one cat.

My interests are reading, learning new things, the water (the reason I still live in MN - or the reason I give to people who don't understand why anyone would choose to live in such a cold place) cooking and traveling.

The place I dream of getting my husband to is Tuscany.

The last place I traveled to outside of the country was to the French Polynesia in May 2007 with a friend. My next planned vacation is in February to Palm Island in the Grenadines. And after that, who knows? I can't wait to see it all!

ECOTONE Nov 20, 2007 4:48 pm

New to the DC region - I grew up in PHL.

I'm (currently) 26 years old, and work in healthcare marketing - spending roughly 17 days a month on the road. My current job has me doing heavy travel for the first time in my life and while I've found it exciting....it sure is tiring too! Looking forward to hundreds of thousands of miles next year though - with my eye on that prize, the travel ain't so bad.

Other than that, I'm a huge PHL sports fan, a big foodie at heart (if i quit my job, i'd head to culinary school), addicted to the weather channel & discover HD theater, and used to tour around the country with Phish.

Been with Flyertalk since 10/06 (changed usernames) and rarely go an hour without checking in.

I'm kiwicounter, living in Tauranga, NZ (TRG)at the moment. I will be attending university in Christchurch (CHC) next year for 5 years, so will be doing a fair amount of domestic travel on NZ and QF and hopefully some DONE4's as well as a few trans-tasmans.
I'm aiming for an AA PLT challenge next year and getting at least silver on QF before then!

Last International Segment: BKK-AKL
Next International Segment: AKL-SYD
Last Domestic Segment: WLG-TRG
Next Domestic Segment: ROT-CHC

Hey there

I also wanted to introduce myself after reading for quite some time in this very helpful forum.
I live 30 km south of FRA. I am 32 years of age. I work for an electronic components distributor as a material planner and logistics engineer. My flying is mainly leisure mostly on weekends from FRA to SZG to my fiancée. My nick comes mainly due to the fact that I love the ocean. In my free time I play squash.

So long

DanTravels Nov 28, 2007 2:47 am

Okay, okay, I'll play along.

I'm a thirtysomething recovering IT guy, transplanted from ex-PHL to the tropics, working wherever science, technology, education and policy messily collide, and providing an outlet for some miniscule amount of the free world's tax dollars to go for something other than politicians getting into sex scandals. :)

I have family and friends in North America, Europe and Africa who I sometimes visit on personal travel, and maybe once every few years I officially get sent somewhere "on business," but most of my travel is just to attend conferences and keep up with what's going on in fields I need to know about.

When I'm not butt-in-seat or working my butt off, I like outdoor activities like biking, hiking, swimming and sometimes running. I also enjoy learning a little bit of new languages, and am to the point where I can greet people in... probably fifteen or so.

I'd like to go to Australia/New Zealand, somewhere in South America, Cape Town, and Irkutsk. And I'd like to cut back to 75,000 EQM a year.

My name is Carianne but I answer to Cari or SK online because SKingList was my screen name just about everywhere for a long time. I'm 28 and for a long time I was an NWA flyer due to travel between the US and Osaka, Japan. I know DTW a little too well I think ;)

My travel has evolved recently and being NY based and in favor of direct flights (due to length of flights, segments are rarely an issue for me) I've switched a lot of my flying to CO (had old, somehow never expired, miles there) and AA depending on where I need to go.

I'm a 28 year old NYU graduate student pursuing a Masters' Degree in Tourism and Travel Management and working for NYC & Company, New York City's tourism marketing office.

That's me in a nutshell. Any questions, feel free to ask. I'm usually floating around somewhere in Travel Buzz, or the AA, CO or NWA fora.

I thought I'd responded to this thread a long time ago, but apparently not (must be one of the other ones like it)...

I'm a game writer/designer, working primarily on MMOs. After a three year absence, I've moved back to Seattle, the most beautiful place in the world! Yay!

After seeing FT mentioned in a WSJ article, I checked it out and signed up about two years ago. While I don't travel extensively, travel itself interests me quite a bit.

Since joining FT, I've been able to rustle up enough miles to finally get status on United (even if it is just 2P). I've met a number of wonderful folks; ran through airports with a couple of them on unfortunately literal mileage runs; and enjoy the community here tremendously.

JazzieCazzie Dec 8, 2007 5:45 pm

Introduction and Thanks!

Just wanted to pop in and sort of introduce myself and say a huge thank you to the founder, the mods and the knowledgeable posters whose writing I've been reading now for the last several hours.

I am obviously a newbie (number of posts and join date make that clear) but I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time here ...

I am about to make my very first MR a week from Monday and before today I didn't even know there was a name for it!

Realized that I was going to be 1200 miles shy of Silver on US Air (I know it sounds like small stuff in comparison to what a lot of regulars here have, but I think it will still be a good first step).

When I told my co-workers about it, they all had the same reaction: "So where are you going to go before the New Year to get the bump?" And they ALL agree it is totally worth it (we all travel a LOT for our job).

My husband thinks I am stark-raving mad but he doesn't travel much for his work.

So I'm flying down to Florida to do my holiday shopping at my favorite mall and when I come back I'll be Silver :)

And now the sky is the limit ... who knows, next year at this time I could have worked my way up to Platinum at Marriott (I think I have a good shot at that one) and whatever the next step is with US Air (our winter vacation is to the Virgin Islands on United so I know I can get partner miles for that, a good start!!!)

So again, thanks in advance for the advice, words of wisdom and just plain assurance I'm not nuts ...

BoyAreMyArmsTired Dec 8, 2007 5:52 pm

Well, welcome! Just so you know, you ARE nuts (but clearly you have found equally crazy people). :)

Jenbel Dec 8, 2007 5:52 pm

JazzieCazzie Welcome to FT! :)

Warning - this place can be addictive ;) If you find yourself planning a trip to Europe just to come meet us all at a a party, you know you are hooked :D

In the meantime, I hope your MR goes smoothly and silver is gained

MRs and shopping, what an excellent combination! I'll have to think about doing a few of those combos myself in 2008.

Welcome to FT!

Believe it or not, I'll actually be IN LA during that span ... might even be able to do the LAX dinner on 1/18!

And hopefully can do another DC meetup in the future!

Hah, great coincidence!:D Feel free to post in that thread whenever you are closer to making a decision. Would be great if you joined us!

cstead Dec 11, 2007 12:49 am

I can't believe I never posted in here...

I just searched the thread and couldn't find a post by myself...I can't believe I never introduced myself!

I am currently 24 years old, and joined Flyertalk between my 4th and 5th years of undergrad. At the time, I had been working as a consultant to various student organizations, traveling almost every weekend and getting acustomed to a lifestyle I knew I had to have.

Recently, my travel has been centered around weekly commutes up to the Bay Area (SFO/SJC/OAK) to visit my girlfriend, and I fill in the gaps with the occasional weekend trip to NYC or IAD. I am currently preparing to move up the Bay Area and am looking for my next challenge in life.

I have met some truly incredible people since becoming part of this community. Every time I step onto a plane, I think about how FT has enriched my life. I started off here to learn the Game, but I've stayed for the laughs, the friends and the adventure.

FlyingBear Dec 11, 2007 1:44 am

My name is Inigo Montoya..

ok, maybe not, but that's what I always think in these intro things :)

I'm Wil. I'm a mechanical engineering grad student (actually recently promoted to Ph.D candidate) at UC Berkeley. I'm past my prime (26 :-P) Including undergrad I've been up here 9 years now and do enjoy the quality of life up here compared to Los Angeles :)

I started browsing FT while looking for advice for conference travel and eventually got sucked into the UA forum. I'm glad I've had a chance to meet a bunch of interesting people in the events that have taken place out here. I'm a light MR'er only filling in the gaps to make 2P. But I am dumping in a ton more personal travel. A combination of wanting EQM and want to explore the world before wrapping up grad school. I've got a trip lined up in Jan to Boston over MLK weekend to check the city out and catch a couple of Bruins games and then down to NYC for a Rangers game and home via PS C! :)

I can easily be described in two ways, FT and hockey. I'm a goalie by night, although mostly in rec coed leagues. I'm a huge Anaheim Ducks fan; however, given my geography, I'm also a SharkPak holder. (If anyone here would like to check out a game sometime, PM me)

Oh, and if anyone here is looking for Ph.D. with interests in experimental fluid mechanics, medical device development/testing, drop me a line!

Anyways, that's me. I don't post too frequently. I'm mostly an observer and dispenser of information when I have it. Basically an engineer I guess :-P But I hope to continue to learn more and one day get to being a 1K!

AKDan Dec 11, 2007 6:00 am

From another Newbie, a bit of a warning: FT is very addictive.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

aucarol Dec 11, 2007 6:11 am

HIGHLY addictive! But welcome! You will love the people and the knowledge you will gain from this site.

Welcome to the wild, crazy, fun and yes FT is addictive. :)

1. Welcome
2. Your husband is absolutely correct. :)

MagnoliaBeauty Dec 11, 2007 11:44 am

Hola Como Estas?

Been reading the forums for awhile, more recently "joined."

I'm Sarah, 25 yo Executive Asst based in DC. I travel 1/2 time for work and 1/2 time for leisure. I'm originally from FL, but have been up here for 3 years now. Prior to living/working here I worked on political campaigns all over the Southeast US. Now I work for an Investment Brokerage Firm and am loving it!^

Since I started travelling a LOT for work this year and was new to the whole FF thing, I will just barely make Silver with US (yeah, flew more than one airline/alliance and now have miles scattered throughout). Hopefully I'll be at least Gold :-: next year (depending on workload). Most of my runs are short trips, so I qualify on segments, not miles (which might change if I do more international travel next year).

I love camping and going to music festivals of almost any kind. Also am a huge nerd  that likes to fiddle with the occasional computer and luvs going out to eat in DC (very yummy international food- especially Ethiopian)! Hit me up if you are in the DC area and want to catch lunch!

Jenbel Dec 12, 2007 12:15 pm

MagnoliaBeauty - welcome to FT :)

gemster Dec 13, 2007 11:09 pm

Welcome! FT just made me make my first MR this week too :p

Ocn Vw 1K Dec 14, 2007 9:53 am

JazzieCazzie, welcome to FlyerTalk! Don't be apologetic of your FF level as we all started at the first elite level once, whether we were in it for only days or years. One great feature of this site is that FTers are not only so helpful, but collectively know more about these programs than the front-line employees.

coachrowsey Dec 15, 2007 12:08 pm

Welcome to FlyerTalk from me also. Greatest people in the world are here & I've been able to meet "a few".

Druid's Dream Dec 31, 2007 2:29 pm

Hi, I've been around for a couple of months and I LOVE FlyerTalk ^

I live in Ann Arbor; retired; and I love seeing new places/new cultures. I usually fly Northwest or other Skyteam.

I'm an avid reader of history, historical fiction, general fiction and science fiction. I like poetry. And my beloved debonair dog's name is Druid :)

I'm 39 and an a currently retired tech industry manager living in San Fran. I say currently because I may go back to work sometime this year.

I've flown United ever since I was a kid (dad always flew United). I'm a UA 1K member.

Great website. I wish I ran across this years ago.

I'm a Rabbi but in order to make a living I'm also a financial consultant. I'm in my 60's and am a ardent Sun Devil fan. My wife's a retired DDS, younger and better looking than I am and an ardent University of Texas fan.

larojg4 Jan 2, 2008 9:24 pm

Hey! I'm James.. 21 years old from outside Boston - currently finishing up my last semester at a college in North Carolina. I've been reading posts on this site for months now and finally decided it was time to join in the fun! I'm Silver Preferred on US Airways.. looking for Gold in '08! Travel has been my life lately and I'm looking to jump into the industry when I get my degree in May. What are you guys doing for work where you get to travel so much? I want a job like that!

2008 trips booked: PVD-DCA-FLL-DCA-PVD, PVD-IAD-GSO, GSO-CLT-SFO-CLT-GSO, IAD-JNB-CPT-JNB-LVI-JNB-WDH/WVB-CPT-JNB-IAD, BOS-LAS-HNL-KOA-HNL-SFO-PIT-BOS

Hope to see you up in the sky! (and not waiting at the airport b/c of hours of delays..)

AKL/XIY Jan 4, 2008 1:48 pm

Hi there, I'm William and I'm 24 years old currenly working for Department of Labour in NZ. I was from China 10 years ago now living and working in NZ. I travel mostly between AKL and XIY as you can see from my user name. I can travel up to 4 times a year to China from New Zealand if I'm required to. For short holidays I travel between New Zealand and Australia, simply there are more things happening than NZ, and of coz good shoppings too. Living in NZ it's nice and queit. However, there are not many flights to other places, because it is too far away from anywhere else. So when you fly, it is more than likely you will be flying long haul. Anyway, happy flying and welcome to China and New Zealand.
