Hi

Hi everyone :)

My name is Will, and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I work in the telco and media industry and travel reasonably frequently - and am just about to become QF Plat.

I'm also a rather eccentric mileage junkie, so I will be keeping a close eye on the mileage runs threads and posting my own ideas if I come accross something interesting :D

SeniorChief May 9, 2008 2:44 pm

Hello

Greeting all,

Realized that I never introduced myself.

I am a retired US Navy Senior Chief. Spent most of my Navy career in and around Asia and the Mid East. Lived in Japan and The Philippines. Since retiring from active duty, I moved into a contracting job supporting both the US Navy and international navies mainly doing Test and Evaluation of new systems.

I fly quite a lot on United and prefer to stay at Hyatts. Found FlyerTalk when I was looking for a way to track BIS miles. Been basically lurking ever since. Post every now and again (more frequently recently).

Based on some of my reading on the forums, I think I fit right in as I tend to enjoy my G&T, beer and Sake a bit more than my Dr. and wife appreciate. But hey, if your gonna live life, live it large! :D

Take Care,
SeniorChief

BlindPilot May 14, 2008 7:18 pm

John here.

Been living in Atlanta since January 2006. Born and raised in Chicago.

My day job is as a manager for one of the world's respected companies (at least I hope the company is respected :D ). Except, when raining, I ride my Vespa to work everyday.

In my previous life, I was a relatively accomplished advertising photographer. Work were published on national magazines, newspapers, annual reports and billboards. I still do occasional work for some advertising companies. I will even do weddings but rather selectively. I quit doing photography as a fulltime profession because the travel got too much and I figured that getting a paycheck every 2 weeks, on a regular basis, would be cool. Portfolio here.

I just started blogging about my travels here.

Why "blindpilot"? Because I have been trying to learn how to fly a small plane and I can't see without my glasses or contacts on. Been flying every other week or so for about 3 1/2 years now.

That's me, in a nutshell.

PanAmFT May 30, 2008 7:03 pm

Better late than never

56 years old, currently a business owner. Was a corporate employee working in international divisions and flying overseas on regular basis for 20+ years, originally in first class and then, after business class was "invented", in biz. Started flying internationally in the mid-70's, and chose my "handle" since most folks think American was the first with a frequent flyer program. It was, if you define it as earning awards based on mileage, but PanAm's Frequent Traveler (FT) program was actually first. It wasn't self-selected, you had to be "nominated" by a travel agent (remember them?) as a high-revenue passenger. Nor did you earn awards based on mileage, but you got perks, like lounge access, special luggage tags, and early boarding. The biggest deal was the right to sit in the special "FT" section between first class and coach on an economy fare. In those days, my company paid for first class on overseas flights, and PanAm didn't fly domestically, so I never took advantage. Some genius postulated that people might pay extra for something like the FT section and thus business class was born some time around 1980. And coach service started a serious downhill slide.
Which continues to this day, though air travel in all classes pretty much sucks relative to even a few years ago. I miss having food in coach (ALWAYS ordered special meals), but most of all I miss having flight attendants that seem to care about the passengers. It's particularly distressing on long overseas flights. Once they start the movie/turn the lights out/finish their one meal-drink run, they disappear. I've gotten chastised for stopping by the galley to pick up a diet Coke on my way to the toilet, and dirty looks for ringing my call button. (How rude of me to interrupt their reading/meal/crossword puzzle.) And this is business as well as coach. On the good side, relative to other costs in those days, getting from here to there via air is a lot cheaper now, especially on restricted fares. Discounted business/first with restrictions were positive innovations.
Fly mostly AA and UA these days. Should hit a million lifetime on AA this year, though my cumulative mileage on both is nowhere near what it might have been if I hadn't continued to fly now-defunct airlines (PanAm, Eastern, TWA, etc.) and foreign flag carriers who were not hooked up with any US airline at the time. Too bad I'm not psychic, but c'est la vie.

Been to every country in Central America and most in South America and western Europe. Still circulating around (now with my husband & business partner), so feel free to ask about hotels or whatever.

future elite Jun 19, 2008 11:15 pm

Hi, I was a (very) sporadic board reader for a few years. Recently, because of the amount of free time due to my current summer-unemployed student status, I started reading more frequently, lurked, and finally decided to register.

I am addicted to travel and "wanderlust" is a word that definitely describes me. I spent fall of 2007 as an exchange student in Singapore, traveled around Southeast Asia, and visited Australia also. I also did a short study abroad program in Scotland in summer of 2006. I developed the travel bug really early on because I made trips to Taiwan where I have family and also as incredibly cliche it is because of reading/looking at pictures in National Geographic. I spend a lot of free time plotting trips in my head and reading Wikitravel (currently: can I make a trip late this summer/year? where should I go for my mega-grad trip?). Whenever I go to bookstores, I almost always visit the Travel section. Also, one of my favorite shows is Globe Trekker.

Anyways, that is a little about me and my travels. I look forward to reading and posting more in the future!

quartermoon Jun 20, 2008 8:51 am

I love reading FlyerTalk!

I travel because I work for a large motorsports sanctioning body, traveling to races and other places I need to be. I don't travel as often as some FT'ers, only 15-20 times a year. But it's enough. Based in Houston, so Continental is my airline of choice.

Amazingly, I had almost never flown until I started the race travel about 10-12 years ago (let's just say somewhere between the ages of 40 and 50). Since then, I've achieved status every year. Mostly I travel around North America, although I've also been to Australia 4 times, Japan twice, and Europe twice doing international races.

I can still remember my first full year of travel. I didn't quite grasp the concept of status, and when my Silver Elite card arrived unexpectedly in the mail, I was amazed. Boy did I feel important. Back in those days before automatic upgrades, you had to call your special Continental phone number the night before and request an upgrade. I did that on the next flight, and as my colleague and I walked down the jetway with the FC boarding, he asked "are sure this isn't costing us any money?" We were awed. Naturally, since then we've become accustomed (or tried to, at every upgrade possible) to sitting up front. I've even participated in "mileage runs" at the end of the year, just to maintain status (or jump to the next level). It's a rat race, but worth it in the long run.

Travelling on the professional racing circuit is not as glamorous as my friends think it is. But it beats having a desk job :)

Hello everybody, Dzien dobry from Poland,

I just realized that I still haven't introduced myself. My nickname is a bit misleading because I'm pure 100% Pole. I simply loved the Danish comedy with Egon Olsen :)

I travel mainly throughout Europe due to the fact that LO is in *A I decided to get married with LH group. I work in automotive company as a marketing manager and as many of you I'm addicted to travel :) Luckily my girlfriend is FA so she's sharing my way of living.

I've already met some of FT'ers and I must admit I'm really impressed by the people. Anyhow, whenever you're planning to visit WAW don't hesitate to contact me - I'll be happy to meet you and to give you some advices how and where to go.

New to these boards

Hey everyone! I'm new to this website and this board. I was referred by Steve, whom I ran across at the In N' Out next to LAX a few days ago. Like most everyone here, I'm always surfing the web for aviation-related sites. I'm a private pilot and work for the FAA as an air traffic controller, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Pat89339 Jul 12, 2008 11:07 pm

Welcome to FlyerTalk Controller Kyle! Don't let the Saturday night quietness make you think this is normal. I am sure the questions will be rolling in soon. There are big Channel 9 fans over on the United Forum and as soon as they discover you I am sure there will be plenty of questions to answer--maybe even too many. :D

ditto on the welcome that my friend pat(withallthosenumbers) said. we're a great and fun bunch of misfits and she is also right about the subject of ch9 over in the united forum (major fans are we :D). also, over in the united forum, you'll see both an "ask the pilot" and "ask the f/a" thread so who knows, maybe over in the travel buzz forum, there soon might be and "ask the faa controller thread" ;).

again, welcome and enjoy the ride you are probably the only f/t'er whom i'll never be able to give a tootsie-pop to while you're working. ;)

TrojanHorse Jul 13, 2008 4:57 am

welcome, to FT

a very good friend of mine in an ATC at TRACON on LI. those guys are definitely a fun bunch of guys..

BiziBB Jul 13, 2008 5:06 am

Kyle, if you wanted a change of scenery or a working holiday, a quick search of google news will show you there is a critical ATC staff shortage in Sydney. It could be lucrative if Australia's CASA is looking for contractors to plug the gap.... just one long fight from LAX! :p

Welcome to FlyerTalk, Controller Kyle. ^

Welcome to FT Controller Kyle! ^ ^

See, for example:
Availability of ATC Communications on Channel 9 thread
The Consolidated "Fun Things Heard on Channel 9" Thread [Merged]

Should you follow goalie's suggestion, I'm sure it would be a popular thread! ^
The UA Pilot and FA question threads have >1500 and >1200 posts, respectively, since they were started in January. :D

Hey all

I've been on this board for a while now, but just found this thread. I figured I would post some of my info.

I am 26 years old and I am from a town about 40 minutes south of Chicago called Romeoville. I am however working in Kuwait as a government contractor working on Ali Al Salem AB since Dec '06. I am only able to travel 3x a year, but since I have joined FT, I have learned how to get the most out of those trips and have made elite stauts good through the end of 2009.

Longtime Flyertalk Lurker (with a couple posts too!)

Hi everyone,

I have been a member of flyertalk for several years now. I have found tons of useful info to help me with my hobby of maxing out FF miles and points. I traveled full time for about 5 years but for the last 5 years I have owned my own business in Baltimore - so sadly I have had no status in any FF program for some time now. I would love to earn status again but dont relish the thought of traveling non-stop again. Perhaps one day I will fork over the $$ for a centurion amex just to get status :o

I take 2 or 3 biz trips a year and 2 or 3 leisure trips. I am always looking for an excuse to hop on a plane and go somewhere (especially somewhere new).

I do my best thinking when I am traveling alone and I need at least 2 trips a year to clear my head and get some new ideas or problems solved in my business.

luckybills Aug 21, 2008 10:31 pm

Hi everyone - I'm 26 years old, live in NYC and work in finance. I travel every few weeks for work and as much as I can when I get some time off. I have the benefit of a younger yet wiser brother who shows me the ropes on how to maximize miles, and also occasionally offers me his hard earned miles for award travel. I'm excited to be a member of FT, and I look forward to learning and likewise contributing (as best as I can) to the FT community.

Deborah Quest Aug 22, 2008 10:42 am

Greetings

Greetings everyone -- I'm Deborah, an off-and-on lurker and first-time poster. I'm a 30something government attorney in San Francisco, on maternity leave until September with my second child. Not a full-out road warrior at this point in my career, more of a business-trip-every-couple-of-months person, plus leisure trips (if you can call flying with a 3-year-old and a baby leisure trips...) at roughly the same frequency. Many of those trips are cross-country -- I'm a pretty recent transplant to San Francisco after living and working various places throughout the Northeast the rest of my life. I'm amazed by the knowledge and good nature that FlyerTalkers bring to the table.

I am in the midst of a somewhat quixotic quest to find a treasured lost object (no $ value, just sentimental) that I left on a United plane flying SFO-IAD. Is there an appropriate place I could tap the FlyerTalkers' collective wisdom on that question?

Glad to be here and looking forward to participating more.

brendog Aug 28, 2008 12:22 pm

Hmm, I guess it's about time after 18 months on FT that I finally posted here.

I am The Brendog (Stupid college nickname that stuck...) and I am a 30-something Sales Engineer/Program Manager for a big GPS company and based just north of NYC, but rarely ever home. In theory, I have a wife (Who is an attorney, no less...), as well, but she's generally on the road, too, so it's hard to say anymore... :D

On the very odd occasions that I'm not working, posting on FT while waiting for a plane, or travelling, I'm generally hiking, brewing/drinking beer, and sleeping. I generally hang out on the CO forum and on Omni, although I do occasionally make my way onto other boards and try to spread my hatred of WN...

While surly, I'm always up for a drink and I become much more easy-going after 3 or 4 of them.

Cheers

My name is ben. I travel every week to different state for my job. I am in consulting and have been on the road for the past 5 year. I spent more time in the state than in canada even though I am canadian

sbrennan007 Sep 26, 2008 8:03 am

Sean, been traveling for a little over 15 years now, 42 years old.

Have been working for the past 15 years now as a Telecommunications Consultant Engineer for an Insurance Company and have traveled to many a Catastrophe site as well as our other large call centers throughout the country.

Favorite carrier to date I think has to be United, with maybe Lufthansa as a close second.

New poster, heard about this site from Cholula, so thanks. Clinical scientist, widowed, native Atlantan (so a Delta girl), love skating, symphony, baking, SEC football (and most sports) and travel about 60% of time giving scientific presentations, mostly domestic; however, also to Europe and Israel.

Hi to All;
I'm a disabled veteran living in the Smoky Mountains of NC. I enlisted in the Army to go to Nuclear Power Plant Operators School. The Berlin Crisis altered that and I was assigned to an infantry unit. Just when I though things couldn't get any worse, my life went to the dogs.... literately. I was reassigned to the MP Corp as a Dog Handler. So much for a good education and career.

I did manage to get a degree in Tallahassee, Fl. "Go Noles". Traveled some internationally in my younger days. Now travel for leisure as the miles accrue. I'm one of the CC warriors. I haven't paid money for a seat in many a year. I dabble in RE investments and thats a good source of mile too.

I learned just about all I know about FF miles right here on the FlyerTalk Forums.

General_Flyer Oct 10, 2008 11:37 pm

Hi,

I'm a Community College student living in Auburn, Washington (At the moment anyway before transfer).. And I'm 19, a hopeful international transfer student to some good university here in the US

I'm from Asia, specifically Indonesia.. Usually flies off about 2x a year to indonesia.. roughly 21,900 miles by Economy; 26,750 miles by Business; or 32,800 by First, and 3-7x around the US a year.

My preferred carriers are Star Alliance Carriers and I've joined about 1/2 of those carriers' mileage program.

I know my username might be a little weird, but that's me.. a general flyer that almost always use Economy or (about 1/12 of the time) Business..

Looking forward to joining the community here, asking questions, maybe answering some too..

Usually flies with United and Virgin America (after its introduction this year) for domestic travels; and with Singapore (starting last year) for international flights; and Silk Air (starting last year) for Regional Asia.

I've had a lot of experiences trying out different carriers, and hope I can contribute my experiences here.

Thanks!

epsilon0 Oct 11, 2008 2:21 am

Hey,

I'm an engineering student, currently a junior, going to school in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm originally from upstate New York, and most of my flying is for trips back home (4-6 times per year). I usually fly United, because until relatively recently it was the only US carrier that flew to China. I only fly Economy, except when I get bumped and get a F seat on the replacement flight. Also, I'm on track to get 2P this year.

Let's see, Epsilon0 was a legacy from a period in high school when I was really obsessed with physics.

JeffInIndy Oct 11, 2008 2:38 am

My name is Jeff, and I have been travelling since August, so I'm kind've a newbie at this.

I am travelling from Indy to Delaware mostly, and have been staying at Staybridge Suites.

I am an instructor by trade, and fly out here mostly every week.

Hi

Di - live in UK (where the history comes from) and mainly fly AA, but have a BA blue member card too.

Found you lot when I was on TA posting about AA status - learnt too late about a Platinum challenge!

However I am now at last a Gold earned through normal means. I don't travel for work - purely for my holidays.

I have a timeshare in Tenerife but I always exchange to Florida or Carribean.

Me and my bloke bought a house in Ormond Beach in May this year so we earn our points from visiting there twice a year.

I have been lurking for a while but not found anything to post about yet. Just trying to learn the hints tips and tricks of AAdvantage useage.
Diana
PS - my moniker is PTbird cos I have a PT Cruiser and I am a bird....

Hi All!
I live in Phoenix, teaching history and government to young teens and mentoring a plethora of new (and not so new) teachers. I only do about 35k a year, to conferences, seminars, some leisure. I've learned a lot on this forum- spread my handouts and materials so they don't look so dangerous to TSA, that I'm not alone in finding certain personal articles missing from my checked bags, how to handle a high-end hotel staff when my room starts flooding from the ceiling and I have to present with 2 hours sleep. I appreciate all the advice!

My life is feast or famine- either too busy, or time off but pooped. Have learned to love the gym (yep- new grandma here and don't want to look it), crazy about exploring new places (comes from parents who are both world travelers). Headed to Seattle and Portland soon, possibly Boston after that.

Not too much time on planes, but enough to understand.

I Was Sir-Lurk-A-Lot But Decided To Chime In!

Hello all!

My name is Andrew and I'm a Professional Motorcycle Racing photographer who covers the AMA Superbike Series here in the US and when there isn't a clash of schedules, the MotoGP World Championship. I'm also Senior AMA Photographer for RoadRacerX magazine, maintain a column with Cycleworld online, and am consitently published in numerous motorcycle magazines worldwide. I live on the West Coast of California, a few miles north of Laguna Seca in a small town called Capitola. I travel extensively around the US and then elsewhere around the globe depending on assignments.

I have visited this site many times and have gleaned very useful information from it's depths and wanted to join to be able to maybe offer something in return and have some questions answered (which I'll post in due course...)

That's all, more about me (and my whitterings) can be found below which is my blog, which then links to my website...

Thanks for listening.

Andrew :)
