Hello!

I am Alan, 25,

My wife and I recently moved to Okinawa, Japan since she is in the Navy. I am a software engineer working for a company in Austin, TX .. So I have/get to travel between the two a handful of times per year.

Chose UA over AA (rather inconvienent since my US home is Austin [sort of]), but the connection to OKA was far more convenient this way.

FT has taught me loads about arranging my travel to get the most bang for my buck.

Sanosuke Oct 30, 2005 8:49 pm

Hello!

I'm Bryant. I am hearing-impaired and I love to travel! On top of that I love to ride my dirtbike around on the ranch/farm like crazy and enjoy my freedom when not travelling. I enjoy meeting people from around the world, too. I love Japan immensely and have visited there twice already, next year being my third time.

Places I've been to: YVR, SFO, LAX, SLC, SEA, HNL, NRT, YEG, YYZ, ORD, IND, AUA, and KTP.

Next trips upcoming: SYD+ADL (Full month Jan) followed by NRT(Mar-April) then LHR in June-July time frame for 2006.

Sanosuke!

huts Nov 4, 2005 11:17 am

Seems like an appropriate place for a first post, after lurking for a while ...

Name: Andrew

Nationality: Australian

Current residence: California

Programs used and abused: I have a fairly large bank of QF points from my days working in PNG and Australia (made it to QF Platinum, then got transferred to Africa, so didn't get much benefit ... except my residual gold status let me status match to UA 1P and CO gold when I moved to the US earlier this year). Clinging precariously to CO elite status for next year (helpful on my routine trips to Houston). Looks like I'll renew UA 1P for 06 (thanks to a December business trip to London and the double EQMs promotion), and that's where I'm trying to focus my points-gathering activities.

Will continue to lurk and learn, and hopefully find the opportunity to add something every now and again.

manar Nov 6, 2005 10:47 pm

Wow - what an impressive thread.

I'm Manar, 33 and from London. I spent most of he last two years studying (MBA) in Asia. Prior to that I spent a decade doing Internet things. No idea what I'm up to next yet - taking some time out to travel the world! :D. Started out with a one world explorer so I'm AA - thanks to FT for the challenge info! - but I think I'm going to be in United's FF programe with an EK/UA rtw soon.

I am a very recent convert to the FF world after shying away from them due to my privacy instincts. Boy do I regret that now given my 4 LON-SIN + numerous short haul trips last year. Live and learn!

kiam Nov 7, 2005 1:08 am

Name: Kiam A. (I have a long last name) - Kiam is pronounced like KIEM.
Origin: Bangkok, Thailand
Work: I am an engineer at one of the major Oilfield Service Companies ~ 6 yrs so far. I am at my late 20's.
2000-2004: Worked and lived in Bakersfield, CA, then Houston, TX and then Perryton, TX. During these 4 yrs, travelled all over the places...e.g. within US, England, Scottland, Paris, Germany, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia...etc
Current assignment: Bangkok, Thailand covering Vietnam, Myanmar and Bangladesh (and Malaysia when needed)
Plan for 2006-2007: MBA
3 months prior to MBA: Around the world trip !!!! CAN'T WAIT !!!
Hobbies: Besides reading and traveling, I am a Points/Miles Freak (same as most of everyone else on here, I hope) + being as active as I can be on FT.

Hi my name is Ramzi I live just outside of Toronto, Canada. I am newly seperated and going to take time to travel on my own, and get to know myself all over again. I hope to meet some of you folks in my travels along the way. So until then.

VTFreiherr Nov 20, 2005 10:55 pm

I am 49, realized at about 40 that I should have been a commercial airline pilot (sigh) and have always been an avid traveller and flyer. The enthusiasm is somewhat dampened these days on domestic flights given the sad state of airline travel in the U.S. with the dreadful carriers and odious TSA and other government intrusion into our lives.

My international travel has been extensive and continues to be enjoyable, especially if I fly a foreign carrier, it seems.

Domestically, I prefer both JetBlue and AirTran to all others, as these two consistently earn high marks in their product and passenger service categories with me. My most-despised (but still often-flown) airline domestically is that U.S. entrant in the "cattlecar of the skies" category - Southwest, a/k/a Southworst. My favorite international carriers (after the demise of my true favorites, SABENA, SwissAir and Braniff (not in chrono order there)) remain Icelandair, Lufthansa and AerLingus. If I am forced to use a U.S. carrier for overseas travel, I prefer United, even though they are among the worst domestically in my book.

I find the state of the domestic airline industry precarious and hope that this latest round of Ch. 11 filings leads to a shake-out with a few more robust and friendlier, customer-service oriented survivors. Failing that, I think it is time for the government to stop wasting money on futile wars and put it where it belongs - into constructing a national high-speed passenger rail network a la TGV/ICE/Thalys or Japanese bullet trains.

kipper Nov 21, 2005 6:37 am

Ok, since I don't think I've ever posted anything here...

I'm Wendy, my handle comes from the Mick Inkpen books about Kipper the Dog. I'm married, and my husband is the one that introduced me to the books and the animated series. Most of my travel is typically personal, as I switched jobs, and really fields when relocating. We're currently living with my parents, so DH can finish his degree. Prior to moving in with them, we were living in Virginia, and I was working in marketing, with a stint in accounting on a government contract that had me living in a hotel for quite a while. I typically stay at Hilton properties.

Outside of all of that, I'm a beer snob, and met my husband at a bar, where he was visiting his ex-girlfriend, who was one of my best friends at that time. We started dating when he visited the next weekend for a beer festival. She was having a girls' night in, and wouldn't let him stay there, he was going to sleep in his truck, but having a 3 person apartment to myself, I said, "You can stay here."

I'm conservative, like guns, and have my concealed carry permit. I do carry everywhere. I used to say I would never have a gun in my house, but after living in some not so nice areas, and dealing with psycho-stalker ex-boyfriend, I've learned that self defense is always the first step. I'm now a card carrying member of the NRA, and am a fan of the 1911, .45 ACP.

I'm going to start working on my MBA soon, in part because no one else in my family has ever done that, and since I'm the youngest, I want to do something no one else has.

Gajules Nov 23, 2005 8:12 am

My name is Julie and I live in Georgia, thus my username, GaJules. I love to travel. So far our best vacation has been three weeks spent in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji! My husband must travel to Europe every month so he's not too eager when I book our next adventure, although he always seems to enjoy it once we are there. I am not sure how much traveling we will be doing in the next year because we are expecting a baby girl in April. Although I don't post a lot on this board I do enjoy reading all the great advice. I am actually a travel moderator on a coupon board and often send people to this board for good information.

Seattlenerd Nov 23, 2005 8:58 pm

My current position requires me to be on the road nearly every week (recently, CID, MSP, RDU, EWR, BUR ... you get the idea). Luckily, I like travel and what I do.

My wife and I try to schedule a trip to Europe at least every other year, traveling simply (it helps that, when I used to be a consultant, one of my clients was Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door -- lots of good tips and people there). Though we do occasionally splurge with Starpoints for a high-end hotel. And we visit Starwood timeshares in Hawaii and Colorado.

We (me and Seattlenerdette) live outside of the Seattle area in an area known as Lake Tapps which is chock full of airline personnel and only a half-hour from SEA. I'm currently a NW Platinum Elite, AS MVP Gold, and Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum (plus members of various other programs at lesser levels).

Hobbies? Reading, writing ... and, of course, travel.

hiflyer66 Nov 24, 2005 2:05 am

Wow, this thread goes WAYYYYYYY back. What the heck, I'll add to it...

I'm Tim, 39 yrs old and I guess you could say I am employed by the DOD (hah!). I've travelled all over the world in various modes of transportation; stayed in 5-star palaces and sleeping bags under the stars. I've eaten on 5th Avenue and in Thai Mess Halls.

Right now, my employer has me milling about the middle east, my home (Japan), the USA, and a point or two in Europe.

I like to write reviews on here (FT Reviews), because they serve two purposes--advice to fellow travelers behind me and they serve as kind of a personal log. I also like to read your tidbits of advice, and kick myself for not finding this board any sooner!

My wife worked for a national airline (YX) for several years, and we non-revved all over the USA. As such, I really didn't get into the mileage game--in fact, we were pretty spoiled by the Best Care in the Air until the financial crunch hit them.

I decided to start banking mileage and hotel points over the past two years.

My "epiphany" came about recently. Coming back to the states (after flying all over the far east), I was on a Delta Flight.

I had no idea what the hell "Boarding Group 6" meant...really! So here I am, showing up for a 767 flight from Tampa to Atlanta, not hearing the announcements, I try to board. The gate agent accosts me for trying to board early (they were only at boarding group 4) and then asks me if I was an Elite (no!). Of course her reply was "you will have to wait until your boarding group is called, SIRRRRR". Sheesh, I turned back dejectedly and waited with about 4 other yokels. On that flight, I thought that status is everything nowadays and I better get in the game otherwise I'll get treated like dirt. And I fly a lot! So I got the clue (and I'm not a status type of guy).

So, here I am in the middle east. Most of my flying is arranged by travel agencies. Sometimes they honor my request for Star Alliance, sometimes they don't. That's okay. I'm hoping to fly on Bengladesh Biman and Emirates one of these days--just to say I did it.

I like Hiltons and UA. I'm a Premier Exec (it will be real close whether I make that next year or not). I live in Japan, so I fly a lot on ANA, OZ, CI, and NW besides UA. Unfortunately, UA is the only one I fly enough to make "status".

The wife and I also like to travel on our own dime. We try to fly in business on our own dime and eat in posh places--it's our time together and we can only do it once or twice a year, so we figure we earned it.

I like to dive and geocache. I'm in pretty good shape and like the outdoors. My "dream" adventure is to re-trace the south georgia Shackleton crossing--maybe I'm nuts. I am a commercial pilot (that means absolutely nothing, I just paid a lot of money to not fly for an airline) and love soaring.

My post has grown real long, time to close it out. If you want to chit chat, feel free to drop me a message!

Helsinki Flyer Nov 24, 2005 4:56 pm

Hi! I´m HelsinkiFlyer and I´m an alcoholic. Whoa! Wrong place, I think?

Ok, a new start. I´m HelsinkiFlyer. I´m from Helsinki, Finland as you could guess from my FT handle. I´m currently finishing my studies I started many years ago, that I somehow failed to complete. So, I´m a business school student and about to graduate any time soon. This should´ve been done some time ago, but work sort of took me away for several years.

I am married. No kids yet. I´d like to have a few. No domestic animals either. What else? I´ve been reading FT for like 3 years and writing for almost 2 years now. I like movies, beer, football (soccer as Americans would call it), ice-hockey, travelling with my wife and stock trading. Day-trading is what I enjoy most. Maybe that´s a reason why my studies are not going as fast as expected?

doggieball Dec 3, 2005 12:36 pm

I have been reading this board for a while but have yet to introduce myself. Recently moved to Raleigh, NC area for a new job and the nicer weather. I do travel a bit and when I do its always my own dime never for biz. Europe is my favorite place to visit as I am huge RUGBY fan and like to catch a game while I'm over the pond.

Cheers!

TIMP Dec 5, 2005 7:59 pm

Hi, Been reading, finally joined. Live in Hobart, Tasmania Australia which makes getting flights that count for awards damnably difficult due to QF basically pulling out of Tassie and leaving us with Jet*. Now tend to fly Virgin Blue due to cost. Do a lot of intrastate driving, and have probably experienced the full gaumet of dogey hotels.
Currently QF Silver, but will probably lose that in May due to lack of SC. Other than that, I have lived in the UK, and Qld as well, and love travelling but dont have enough holidays from the Uni to do it (PhD students are kept on a tight reign).

I work in lower manhattan. Born and raised in Bklyn, NY. Lived in the city during college. Travel a great deal for work as well as personal. Don't travel as much as I used to since most of my travel buddies are now married/children.

Have always been a points junkie since college. In my spare time I plan group trips ie. ski trips cruises etc (like the points, perks etc) plus I get to travel free  .

Love to read, photography, more likely to listen to music vs watch tv,and am a gadget junkie (more so than some of my male friends) and love to shop.

This site has been a great resource and has really helped me maximise my points

Fox Trot Dec 18, 2005 9:46 pm

Introduction

Hello Fellow Flyers!

I joined flyertalk back in 2001 as I have been frequent flying since the age of 3, and I'm now 33 :) Was off the boards for a few years as I was consumed with work; running my own business in the IT industry. Decided to make a career change and now am back to contributing on flyertalk.

My real name is Monica. I chose Fox Trot as it relates to my trotting around the globe; and may have some military influence as I studied International Relations at University and interned with our government. At that time I planned to go into the Foreign Service, and who knows I may end up there one day:)

I enjoy contributing trip reports, photo's, reading and keeping up with the constant changes, challenges (promos/MR's/qualifiers) in the travel industry.

I'm currently working for the family business (commercial scales and food machinery) as a consultant and in IT. This makes for some flexible time and I enjoy the perks of attending conventions and the travel. However, the majority of my travels are done on my own dime.

Concurrently sending out my resume to several companies I'm interested in working for; as I'm willing to travel 75% of the time and enjoy meeting people at home and on the road. Eventually, I'll get married and settle down, for now I'll continue to travel frequently.

Flyertalk has impacted my life in so much as I have made some dear friends through meeting on Flyertalk and then meeting in the real world. It's amazing how our interests in travel bring us together in the virtual world. Hence the saying "Birds of a Feather Flock Together"

TVL4FREE has been a great friend since day one on the boards. The majority of my MR's are booked with his advice. My first MR was a tough road and it's to bad the trip report is no longer live on the boards (at least I can't find it). I flew from SAN-LAX-HNL-GUM-NRT-SIN-NRT-HOU-SAN in economy on CO. I made CO Plat thanks to TVL4FREE and continued to hold status until 2004 (living in SAN at the time).

Then I moved to the Bay Area and started from 0 to gain status with UAL. I made the mistake of getting comped status with UAL and AA in 2003 and did not use the status. Hence, UAL would not comp again so I jumped on the band wagon to attain 1k from GM in 3 weeks (with the double EQM promo) recently. Again TVL4FREE helped out with the most varied routings that are virtually impossible. I've also recently met Pat89339 who was kind enough to sponsor an upgrade to business from SFO to HNL at the start of my 0-1k journey.

There are several other members who I have lost touch with and hope to re-connect in the future. If you read this and remember getting together in SIN in 2001 at the Conrad lounge send me a PM.

My post is a long one, so I'll close in saying that it is a pleasure to meet everyone and an honor to participate on the boards.

nearSACTO Jan 2, 2006 5:25 pm

Just joined FT a few months back, slowly getting acquainted to the board... tons of information. I wish I knew it existed years ago. I've been looking/searching for information that is posted/available in many threads on this website.

As for myself, I'm a retired military guy, working for the government now, so I try to take advantage of either military or government rates if lower than other special rates advertised. I've been around the world at least twice both on official or business and leisure travel. Favorite place was on a classified mission to Kwajelein Island, had the most beautiful, relaxing, soul searching and spiritual time in my life... the stars at night are within an arms reach.

I look forward to learning all the abbreviations and lingo in the threads... I gotta keep looking at the glossary to figure things out.

re-post when you change walks of life...?

I’m not sure what the proper thread etiquette is in this case, but since I’ve had a radical change in who I am since the last time I posted on this thread, I though I would give it a go again, my apologies if I’m breaking any rules.

I’m an ex finance guy turned wine Merchant. After some 11 years in banking (having lived in 7 different cities), I decided that Id had enough of the corporate world and hung up my suit & ties – and returned to my native City. I started a couple of ventures related to the Food Industry, with wine as a central part of my business. When I first went into banking, I started developing an interest in collecting wines, and as my cellar grew… I grew increasingly tired of paying retail prices for my favorite wines. That was how I finally decided to buy up half of a Fine Wine Retailer here in Buenos Aires. I still travel a fair amount, although it’s mostly within Argentina – although I do regularly visit CGK for both business and to see good friends.

I’ve given up on all my Frequent Flyer habits and don’t really know what status I have on all those old programs… although I still have a couple of miles/points hanging around here and there. My original FT name is related to the fact that my first top elite status objective was 1K on United Airlines.

I’m also basically retired from all the points & miles boards, focusing all my attention on a couple of threads related to Buenos Aires. I have a sort of personal crusade to try and help all those that wish to come & visit Argentina. I encourage everybody thinking of an “alternative” vacation abroad to consider coming to Argentina… more details about Buenos Aires can be found here:

^ ^ to Gaucho100K!

What do you mean by "alternative" vacation? Is that like the gay cowboy movie? What if we don't want to spend time with lonley gauchos on the prairie?

:D JUST KIDDING! Argentina is a great place to visit. Glad to hear the update about what you're doing. :)

Hello,

I've been reading FlyerTalk for a while but am only just getting ready to start posting. This looked like the right place to say "hi" so here I am.

I grew up thinking I would be a travel agent, but it didn't work out. Then I thought I'd be a tour guide, but that didn't work out either. I actually applied for a job as a TWA customer service agent back in 1982, but after making me fly myself to New York for an interview they decided they weren't hiring anyone new.

I used to fly quite a bit but I'm out of practice. Right now I have 3000 legacy miles on AA that I never used up, and all the rest of my miles on all the programs have expired. Maybe I'll start racking them up again.

anbrand Jan 19, 2006 2:41 am

Hello there!

Just like someone above mentioned I am not sure about the proper etiquette for this thread. Since I am also a newbie (not to flying but to FT), I would appreciate to be enlightened regarding the custom if I’m “out of bounds”.

My thirtieth birthday is around the corner. I work as a Business Development Manager for a sign manufacturer and my main business is to do “start ups” for new distributor and/or to help our existing ones throughout the world with marketing and sales. Our departments head office is located in ARN were I also live.

Since I travel out of Scandinavia * Alliance (have always preferred LH to SK) is the natural choice. Glad that I discovered FT and enjoys reading about air travel and travelling in general.

Welcome!

I wouldn't say there is any specific etiquette that would be unknown elsewhere. Busy boards like BA or AA sometimes can get edgy to the point of rudeness, but such instances are rare.

You will find an average Frequent Flyer quite good natured because, as a rule, those with severely deficient inter-personal skills generally don't end up in jobs that involve a lot of flying.

Members are generally very unforgiving to "Don't You Know Who I Am?" attitude where someone recently silvered or golded, or flying for the first time in C or F, comes up with a long story of complaining based on a single incident (luggage lost / upgrade denied / stodgy cheesecake in First etc.). Most members are very experienced and know how this industry works and know the difference between an incident and a trend.

I would say it is a very kind-hearted and good-natured forum.

I think most of my "single incident" complaints are about fellow passengers, not the ground or flight crew. The passenger who made the 13-year-old unaccompanied kid cry; the passenger who told the stewardess he worked for the head office and would have her fired (for not giving him alcoholic drinks on a BOS->LGA flight when she wasn't allowed to).

Then again, a "single incident" could be worth complaining about forever if it is egregious enough. I know I have read stories of being discriminated against racially, or of deliberate destruction of someone's travel plans rather than accidental damage -- things like that are worth hearing.

I agree - even single incidents are interesting. I was referring to much grander generalizations made by (usually) less experienced travellers.

I once read (not on FT) a totally insane comparison of two airlines with an argument that one of them uses primarily Airbus aircraft "which go much faster" , when challenged about this, the OP explained that he measured the time and distance and "on airbus you can even feel the speed is higher".

I am referring to the type of comment like: "What's wrong with United? They need to get their act together! I flew LAX to O'Hare and they refused me an upgrade. Last year I flew with Continental once and they upgraded me, so I know it can be done!" :D

The sad routine "I can get you fired, you know" is pathetic but I think all cabin crew hear it at least once a week so they do not take it seriously (I hope)

He's right. It is incredible how much people know. There is nothing in the loyalty programs of larger airlines that does not get examined to the last detail.

Well, here I am having read the boards for a while and posted a little bit, but have yet to introduce myself. So here goes...

Almost 31 and I've just relocated to to MLB after a decade in BOS in the music business. I became addicted to travelling when I got the opportunity to tour with a few bands. A new city every day - very exciting when you get to see more of it than just the parking lot of the venue you're playing.

I have to give thanks to gleff for introducing me (wether he knew it or not) to this site and to the rest of the FT'ers for all I've learned from this site in such a short time. I've already got my first award trip (almost - return leg left to go) booked for myself and another, mostly with miles I've earned by following tips here.

I'm stuck working locally now, but any excuse to get away works for me!

reckless31abandon Feb 11, 2006 10:01 pm

Hi-
I'm new to FlyerTalk, mostly a lurker since I don't have much expertise, and don't get to travel as much as I'd like....yet! Right now, bargains are a little more appealing than points and miles, at least on my current income.
I live in Colorado, 25 years old, graduated from South Dakota State University... Go Jacks! ....Anyone?? no? :D
I work in magazine publishing, (with a Sociology/Crim Justice degree!!)
Just your average country girl from the sticks...! I'm not currently attached, I love horses and rodeos, and my main hobbies are drawing, writing and reading. Most people consider me a "jack of all trades," since I have a lot of skills in a variety of areas- I can cook, sew, handle a gun, and work on my own car. I'm aspiring to live on a farm/ranch somewhere in the midwest, and go back to school for a master's in Counseling or Clinical Psych, and hopefully be able to travel more.
Hope to get to know more of y'all!

Hi All,

My name is Tim, but my friends in France call me "Timo". I am a Senior at the University of Wisconsin and am currently studying abroad at the ESCP-EAP in Paris, France. I have lived for 18 months in France (1 year exchange in High School, and 1 semester my sophomore year of college). I am 22 years old and will be graduating in May, and will be moving to Houston, Texas in July. I love to travel and have travelled throughout Europe. I made PLAT on NWA for the first time and will drop to a NWA nothing next year, as my job in Houston doesn't have any travel. There I will be working in the finance department at a large oil company. If anyone is coming to Paris, feel free to PM me.

Cheers

Timo

From SoCal originally, got hooked on FFP's flying back and forth to school on the east coast. Live in Hong Kong now working for a sporting good mfr. Averaged 180-200k miles per year for the past eight years (half of that sitting in the back!) but this may be the first year I have to work to reach 100,000. Both from personal experience, as well as reading this forum, have become the go-to guy in my company for how to squeeze every perk you can out of the system. Unfortunately, my company travel dept can't coordinate my travel as well as I can (I even find cheaper fares!) so I seem to spend a lot of time (more than I should!) booking my own trips. At least I can fall back on a career as a travel agent if I ever have to.

thanks to all the posters here for your advice and suggestions!

Hi, everyone, I'm 3timesalady. Been around for a few months, lurking for awhile before then, but only getting around to introducing myself now!

I'm awfully quick to conjure up conspiracy theories, so for fear of big brother, I believe I'm registered under a fake name. If I ever meet any of you in person (and I hope to!), I'll consider divulging my real one. :)

I'm 29, your typical MBA-cum-consultant, currently racking up the miles and hotel points during my weekly commute b/t Chicago and New York. When not on the road, I enjoy mini-toberlones, long walks on the beach, bubble baths, and the soulful crooning of Barry Manilow.

Ok, I'm so totally kidding about that last part. Except for the mini-toberlerones, that is -- them's good eating'!!! :D
