Ello all from North Yorkshire :)

I'm Ally and I'm an avid traveller...or at least I try to be :o

I usually cruise at least once a year and that invariably means getting on a plane and doing a longhaul to somewhere exotic...the next one being a 41 day cruise that starts in Singapore and ends in Rome next spring :)

Last year I was in the Far East and Houston, so I do tend to get around a bit and always as a solo traveller too :)

Today's new kid on the block; retired former military and civil pilot living in the mountains of eastern Spain. Four dogs, demanding garden, bad back, good wife.

Trying to catch up

In the sixties I was a VC10er between THR and LHR. Those were the days
when RTW was PA1 or PA2.

Now retired and living in CPT with family in BRS, ATL and near EVV. Lots of SA miles, but how best to use them?

Hi new to the forum, just wanted to say hi.

Been traveling a bit and decided to be smarter with my miles, hopefully I can get some help here.

Original FlyerTalker back in action again

Back to participating in the forum after several years of inactivity! Originally joined FT back in 1998; still work as a design drafter and just accepted a contract job in paradise; better known as Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. (2200 miles SW of Honolulu.) It's a two-year contract job working at the Reagan Test Site, which is part of the Pacific Missile Range.

Don't fly as often as I used to, but I'm gonna be racking up some serious mileage!

Veteran flyer, new to flyertalk

Just joined. Good to be here.

More than anybody needs to know is in my Wikipedia entry.

Of possible interest is the 10,000 or so photos I've taken out the windows of commercial airplanes.

I fly United almost exclusively, and have been a 1K member with them for a number of years.

Looking forward to finding my way around the forums and helping out where I can.

New to the Site

Hey yall...just happended upon this site...

My name is Jeff and I am 29 years old in live in Atlanta, GA. I moved to the South about 3 years ago from CA, where I was born and raised and went to school (UCLA)...quite a change!

I am Director of Reporting and Budgeting for a company called ExamWorks that performs Independent Medical Exams. We plan to acquire several smaller companies across the country over the next 2-3 years and then take the company public. I do a bit of work travel going to look at potential acquisitions and then assimilating them in to our finance group.

My wife and I love to travel internationally, we quit our jobs in 2006 and spent 5 months traveling around the world. Recently, we have been back to the Dominican Republic and Cozumel and just booked a trip for August to Siciliy and the Aeolian Islands...can't wait!

Given that we live in Atlanta, we fly primarily on Delta, and I am interested in any ways to gets miles, medallion points and upgrades. I am currently a Gold Medallion and working on getting to Platinum!

Great Site ...

Hi all,

just found this site a few weeks ago and it has become almost a nightly activity to browse through all the interesting stuff that is discussed here.

I am a regular traveler enrolled in several FT programs (see my flight history at flightmemory.com), but I'll probably never become Gold/Platinium in anything. I am located in Germany, working for a university, so business traveling is limited to 3-4 international conferences per year in economy. Plus, officially I couldn't even use the miles I collect for private travel... that sucks, but it is still better than not flying at all...

Anyway, I enjoy the forum ... keep on posting...
Marlowe

airportfan Aug 4, 2009 7:21 am

Hi,

I like airports ;)

Actually, I work as a software developer for a German airline. It's not one of the really big few (like Lufthansa), but it's not a small one either. Most Germans probably know it.

Because of my job, I do know my way around terms like PNR, Fare Rules, SSR, PNL, etc. - but still not nearly as well as you guys. I'm not a frequent flyer (yet?), but I love aviation and while flying in First is still a dream for me, I very much hope it's a dream that sooner or later will come true.

I work with the Navitaire NewSkies system our airline is running, so if you have any questions about that, feel free to ask. However, I can't disclose any information specific to our airline as that would probably get me into trouble.

Well, that should be enough about me :) Looking forward to reading all the interesting threads here on FT and maybe even being able to answer a question here and there.

Hi all,

I've lurked here as a guest a few times and have some friends that are regulars here. I can't offer much in the way of mileage upgrades and such but I can offer some perspective on things from the other side of the cockpit door. I'm a pilot for a large international carrier that shall remain nameless on the 747-400. If anyone has any operational questions I'd be happy to try and help answer. Keep in mind that we don't deal with passenger issues such as ticket problems or fequent flier programs but if you want to know what that funny noise is before the engines start I may be able to help.

Take care all!

Welcome, ryguy1977, our new pilot friend!

There are quite a few pilots on board. We also have ask-a-pilot threads in some airline fora, such as http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...-q-thread.html. You may want to chime in when you feel comfortable popping your head in the airline you fly for.

Before that, you may also find some interesting reading material for pilots in our TravelBuzz! Forum: Example 1 & Example 2.

Time to share…

Well here it goes, my name is Thomas, 39 years old and I’m based in DUB and SNN (tend not to fly out of SNN though). I work in the public sector and have been a frequent traveller for most of my adult live. My very first flight was with Interflug (the old East German state airline) from SXB to SVO on a study trip to Moscow and Leningrad at the time. Return was on an old propeller aircraft operated by SU.

My flying took off in 1991 when I became active in international politics. Mainly European destinations out of TXL. I made LH FTL at tender age of 23 and became LH SEN at 24 and kept that for 13 years. In those days LH SEN’s were identified on board with a pin which was part of your welcome package to put on your lapel, no fancy codes on your BP then. Your card also acted as a form of credit card and you could book flights with LH directly with an invoice sent to you some weeks later, how times have changed. LH SENs also had their own account manager. I still have some friends who work as lounge dragons in FRA from those days. Then they had a lot less customers and they remembered you.

Moved to YYZ in 1994 and was regularly on LH’s TATL service to FRA and onwards (the first route to introduce non smoking flights unfortunately but that is another story). In those day occasionally you would still get LH's DC 10 before they converted it to a freighter. Great aircraft!

1995 relocated to DUB and more European flights. Memorable flying moments I have many, among those an aborted take off on LH at YYZ (like a roller coaster ride) and without a doubt the most memorable was being involuntarily rerouted by LH on a DUB-FRA-JFK booking onto DUB-LHR-JFK on Concorde!!! holding an economy class ticket. The LH staff member who did this for me (accidentally) almost lost her job over this and LH had to pay BA the difference (FIM (Flight Interruption Manual) or no FIM, I had one by the way). One the return EWR-FRA-DUB I used miles to upgrade into C and they bumped me up to F. Not a bad old trip at all.

After a lull in my flying programme and having been downgraded to LH FTL I changed over to BD’s Diamond Club and have been BD*G for 4 years. Not surprisingly I have a preference for *A though I fly EI and others a bit intra European, though NEVER on that joke of an airline FR.

These days my main destinations are European, especially GVA and regular trips to NYC and IAD. Known to do the occasional mileage run in C or F to Florida if needed. If you live in Ireland a bit of sun is welcome. Other than that a week’s boating around Ibiza is always good.

Favourite hotel chain is Sofitel. I have a thing for that French flair. Though it is a bit worrying if they tell you that you spent 50 nights a year with them alone. Not counting other hotels. Second has been Hilton purely because of international availability.

Fell free to PM me if you want to know more.,

Hey all... New member!

So, I've been lurking for a bit and have pretty much gotten addicted over the last few days. My job puts me in a new city pretty much every weekday, so I find myself traveling a lot these days. Looking to maximize my points/mileage for the thousands of $$ i spend a month on air travel/hotels.

Look forward to getting to know you all!

scentcrazy Aug 24, 2009 6:12 pm

Hello everyone!

Like another recent poster mentioned, I found out about this community through Fatwallet for the Luxury Hotels of the World promotion. Did not score a room but congrats to everyone who did.

I live in PHL but have flown out of LGA and EWR for international flights. As much as I love to travel, I actually hate to fly. It's gotten progressively worse since the SwissAir crash ten years ago, but I still muster up enough to get me through the flight. In the future I'd love to do a course to assist people who have a fear of flying.

I've not had employment that required travel, so my flights/vacation stays are all leisure. Have finished traveling for the year, short 3 day Bahamas cruise and another trip to Orlando. Next year my trips will be a convention in New Orleans and a trip to Paris.

This year I've been introduced to the world of Airport VIP clubs via Priority Pass thanks to the CitiAmex deal. I love them! Am also interested in staying in some luxury hotels during my travels.

I don't travel nearly enough to ever have the awards levels that many of you have, but will take advantage of whatever promos apply to me.

So many great parts to this forum but especially love the credit card forums. Take care everyone!

ac777 Aug 25, 2009 9:13 pm

Dear scentcrazy--welcome to FT:) BTW there are some virtual reality programs available to get over the fear of flying. If you want PM me and I'll provide you some further info.

Hello,
Pat from Atlanta, GA.
We fly Delta.
We like to use miles for trips to Europe, business class.

Thanks for the info on the site. Our next trip is to FRA on Delta/Northwest BE.

Me

As requested, a bit about me. Geoff Arnold (hence the unimaginative handle), expat Brit, moderately frequent flier, blogger, aviation enthusiast (but not pilot - I've watched people bankrupt themselves that way). I worked for a computer company for 20 years that saw me regularly making UA 1K; then I moved to Seattle and did rather less travel. I've just joined a Chinese company which means that I'm going to be racking up SFO-HKG miles at an alarming rate (but NOT on CX, thank you very much!)

Hi everyone!

I discovered this site a couple of months ago when I had several questions about an up-coming trip to the US. When I tapped each of my (somewhat obscure I thought) queries into Google, it brought up an FT thread with the answer! Ever since then I’ve been addicted and enjoy observing the many animated debates and picking up tips from the wealth of collective knowledge here.

I’m a Brit who now lives in the Balearic Islands. You’re most likely to bump into me flying domestic around Spain on IB or going back “home” on BA into LHR / LGW. My latest hobby is collecting miles so I see I’m in good company here! I’m not very good at spending miles though; in fact I’m yet to make a reward booking, preferring instead to save them for a rainy day “just in case”.

My passions include web design, fine dining and most things which involve the sea (boating, scuba or just going to the beach). I try not to travel anywhere in August so I can enjoy the latter.

I’ve got to know all of the Balearic Islands quite well during my several years living here and would be delighted to share some suggestions / ideas / tips to anyone looking to make the most out of a visit here!

Ok, nearly a member for a year and it seemed I missed this topic so better late then never:

Hi,

My name is Stijn, I'm a 30yo guy living in Belgium (you know, one of those tiny little countries in Europe (and no Belgium is NOT the capital of Brussels, it's the other way ;)). I'm single (to busy to find a girlfriend :() I speak 3 languages and understand 3 others.

I'm an assistant fleetmanager in one of Belgian's largest companies involved in landscaping, green area maintenance and road construction and this for about 7 years now. Before I worked a couple of years for one of the 10 biggest heavy haul companies worldwide.

Besides being an assistant fleetmanager I'm also the president of a large non profit organisation (+10.000 members) for emergency personnel called "First-Response". We "operate" a online discussion board and an informational website. We also organise visits to emergency services, companies, hospitals, etc... in order to give our members the oppurtunity to learn something from other services. As a new feature we will start organizing trips to foreign countries where members can experience the life of the emergency services in other countries. Our first trip will be in a couple of months when we leave with 9 participants and 2 guides from our organisation to the fire department of Dallas,TX in the USA where we will stay for a week to learn about their ways of handling emergencies. After this week we will spend some time in Texas (1 week) to give the participants the change to learn about the country.

I'm also a firephotographer for some fire & police departments in my area. Also this is complete voluntary just like running the non profit organisation.

On rare occasions I'm also a press photographer as a replacement for a collegue I'm working with.

And if there is some spare time left I like to take pictures on concerts or motorsport events. Just as a hobby or as a service to people I know.

My hobby's are mostly my work, the non profit organisation, the firephotography and attending concerts. But also travelling... On the little free time left I like to jump on a plane an fly thousands of miles to spend some time on another continent. Mostly just for a couple of days... Far away from the daily stress... I don't need 2 weeks of holiday but I do like some occasional free time for only a couple of days. Just enough to reload the batteries.

Concerning FT: I'm was "lurking" this site for many years untill finally I decided to register last year. I like to participate once in a while but I'm still reading most of the time ;)

Greetz,

Stijn (aka Bralo20)

PS Didn't took the time to read everything I've written, my appologies for any big mistakes towards grammar ;)

Wow sounds like quite the post-wedding trip! Congratulations on your upcoming nuptuals.

I think you've picked the best day of the year to get married, though one could argue i'm biased as it's also my birthday ;)

I'm Kristen. I'm originally from South Carolina, but I got lucky and I'm living in Hawaii at the moment. I work for the US Coast Guard and I go to school at the University of Hawaii. I do some freelance photography as well.

I love to travel, whether its a last minute road trip or flying around the world. My dad is a pilot, so I grew up loving to fly.

I'm also a huge football fan...both English and American. I've been known to plan my travel so that I can squeeze in a football game before I leave...

new to this forum

Hello
Steve here from Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

My interest in this forum is to gain more understanding and knowledge of how best to use my collect Aeroplan points for travel.

I suspect as in many such programs that if one new about things insiders know one could make much greater use of reward points.

For instance does this plan have any kind of 'last minute' deals.
How do I get two adults and two children (11 & 12) down to Belize for a week or two on my points.

I find the aeroplan site not so friendly but more a about marketing what they want to sell you.

So in a nutshell I'm looking for tips and tricks to get the most of out of my points.

I'm interested in any feedback that along these lines, thanks,
Steve
