Loopies

Hi I'm Loopies, been on FlyerTalk for a few years now mainly lurking for good deals and always checking it before any planned trips.
I live in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada (YVR) - the truly most beautiful place on earth. Those of you who have been here will know exactly what I'm talking about.

I grew up travelling the world as my dad loved to travel and try new things. So I was born in England to Irish parents, later we moved back to Ireland then on to Australia, and finally Canada where I have lived on both coasts. In between I have been all around the world (Japan, US, France, Switzerland, Caribbean etc.)
I am married with no kids which leaves lots of time and flexibility for travel - especially the impromptu kind.

I travelled a lot in a previous job and acquired all of my elite status' but now I don't think I'll be able to hold on to them. Especially since I just went through brain surgery on Oct 8/2010 as a brain tumor was discovered just 2 weeks prior. Talk about a change to your life in an instant. I have a long recovery ahead of me but hope things will go well. It will give me even more time to surf FlyerTalk!

Stay well you FlyerTalkers and seize the day (my new personal motto) you just never know when you'll be pulling into that gate for the last time. Cheers!

Hi i am new to the site
43 years old, married one child
Based in St. Louis, grew up in Northern Virginia, USA
have been travelling extensively for about fours years
last three years international, my territory takes me to GCC countries, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Eastern Europe, France, Scandic Countries, and few more.

Diamond with Delta, and with some good luck 1K with United by end of this year.
Not that impressed with Delta's Diamond (free sky club membership is nice)
find the upgrade rules (class of service with Delta) quite annoying M class or higher.
Comibne delta with UA FF would be near satisfying.
currently in France.

Hi all! I've been lurking here for at least two years. Finally jumped in this year as a participant, mainly just to stop being a lurker! It's just that taking the time to actually read the site provides pretty much everything I'm ever wondering about, so there never has been much reason to actually post!

Good job, FTers!

So, we're on the final leg toward an empty nest (love all of our kids to death, but still... woohoo!!! YAY!!!)... Mr Abroad lives full-time in SE Asia, while i split time between there and our other two homes in the USA.

Love to travel, especially in Asia, and adore expat life. Seems like whenever we strike a destination off our list, two more get added!

Thanks for an amazingly useful website, FT!

We joined from PCR Anywhere Challenge

Many people have joined this forum specifically due to the Priority Club Anywhere Challenge; some people discovered this forum while searching for answers to the contest. So let's have a thread just for us, and those who would welcome us.

I'll go first.

Hi. If I flap my arms hard enough, I hope to fly up front in F some day. I have been learning a lot of good travel advice, especially from the TS&S forum. I travel mainly for pleasure, once in a long while for work. I prefer SWA but have minimal brand loyalty to airlines.

Jenbel Oct 19, 2010 7:38 am

While I like the idea, we do already have a thread for welcoming new members to the forum, and I'm going to merge this thread in with that one.

Hello FTers from greenbombadil

I've been a member/reader of FT a year or so and love reading these threads. My friends think I'm such a savvy traveler but I have got nothing on all of you. I live in Illinois near our largest Big 10 University and am involved in many book clubs and gardening and finishing my grad degree in History (finally!) and of course, traveling. I'm a huge frequent stay/frequent flyer point traveler. I love Western Europe the most, I think, though natural wonders in the US thrill me too. I know Walt Disney World like the back of my hand though a trip to London or Paris or anywhere in Germany, Austria or Italy is more my style. I'm taking my family (teenagers - yikes!) on an adventure trip to Northern Spain this summer and to see our great friends in Milan. I get lost on my travels a lot but have seen the most amazing things and had the most amazing meals while I've been lost. I love anglo history and ancient battle sites and love talking to all the many people who know more than I do about these things.

Long Time Lurker

Hi everyone. I am a long time lurker (I think I registered in 2006) and lurked for years before I even registered. Just wanted to say hi and that I love this site!

I am doing my first SR in a few weeks, the MKE-PIT run. Thank you so much for the great info I have found. If I didn't see that run, then I would not be doing the runs to retain my 2P. :) I know, not as glamorous as 1P or 1K, but gotta start somewhere. :)

Let us know how cranky you are after those SRs!!

crankychick Oct 21, 2010 9:17 am

LOL. I just may be cranky after the 1st one. :p

You guys are cracking me up. Funny thing is that I am not normally cranky, but the day I registered on Trip Advisor years ago I WAS cranky. I try to keep the same log in name so I don't forget. :)

Unless you are my ex-husband who hates to fly, then I think I am neither, hehehe.

My Introduction. Happy to be here!!!

My name is Stacy Carson and I am a new member of FlyerTalk. I've traveled to 4 continents, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. Started because of a passion for adventure sports, but have moved more into connecting with people and the lands I travel to. Next big destination looks like Russia, so I'm excited! Currently working as a customer support representative and doing that while traveling, so life is good.

I am looking forward to getting to know the members here and participating in the discussions. However, I am mostly excited about learning from everyone!

Have a great weekend!

New Member Saying Hello

Hi there,

I've lurked on here on and off for a few years, but figured I should peek out and say hello. I am a Clinical Research Associate for a CRO. I travel most weeks and almost exclusively in North America for work (for 3+ years now). I live in Austin, TX and work from home when not on the road. I really love my job and all of the great perks and benefits that come with it - of course we all know there are headaches involved with travel as well.

Outside of the domestic US, I have been to Spain, Hawaii and Mexico but really want to do some more international travel. Top of my list right now would be Italy & Ireland and then I'd like to see some more exotic locations. It took me awhile to get situated and decide which airlines to go with and I've finally decided to focus mostly on flying Continental and SWA (hey, I enjoy domestic vacations!).

As far as personal/home life, I'm married with 3 dogs and no kids. Our pups keep us very busy, but we also do a lot of cycling (road & mountain biking), paddle boarding and gardening. Of course, we travel quite a bit as well.

Well, that's all I've got right now. I'm still figuring out how to navigate the website and post/respond so please be gentle! ;)

New member from Creel, Mexico

Hello everyone,
I am a new member. I didnt see a forum for newbies so I posted here. My famly and I live in the northeastern Mexico state of Chihuahua in the small mountain town of Creel.
Anyone else here living in Mexico?

RichardInSF Nov 7, 2010 9:06 pm

Welcome to FT, downinmexico! I have been to Creel exactly once in my life but I loved it. The portion of the Chihuahua al Pacifico train route between Creel and the Pacific is, even today, a marvel of engineering and a truly exciting ride. Getting off at Creel and going down into the canyon (which I also did) was wonderful as well.

The entire experience is like nothing else in Mexico, truly remarkable.

So, are you of Tarahumara descent?

downinmexico Nov 7, 2010 9:14 pm

Thanks for the reply!

Hello,
No, I am not of Tarahumara decent , I am of Mississippi decent. I have lived here with my family for almost 4 years doing non-profit humanitarian water projects.

firefly2010 Nov 7, 2010 11:51 pm

ADB2972 Nov 10, 2010 3:29 am

Some info about me

I'm 61 and director of a Christian missions organization working in 103 countries outside USA. I live in Oklahoma City, OK, when not living on a Delta or American flight :). Married with two grown children and one adorable granddaughter. Married for 38 years to the same woman - I am very blessed.

Love traveling and meeting new people, eating local cuisine, learning of new cultures.

Writer, reader, jogger, swimmer.

Delta Diamond Million Miler; American Platinum (will be EP by end of December), Hilton Diamond. Most of my travel is international and my biggest flight issues are how to get business upgrades at lowest fares. Almost always get domestic upgrades.

Ocn Vw 1K Nov 11, 2010 1:11 pm

ADB2972, welcome to FlyerTalk. That's a lot of flying and travelling! We can all learn a lot from your experiences so look forward to seeing your posts and hope that your travels and upgrades will go better based on members' posts which you can use as well.

I'm planning to do a 10 day trip to Italy in Nov-11 and I'm researching from now in the do's and don'ts of traveling to Italy. So far so good, I just have a dilema in which I dont mind to flight in coach but my partner wants to do a first class. Price difference is outrageous but let's see if I can find a deal that can please us both!

When as a kid, grandfather sat us down and explain that we all have one spirits following us, but he said I have two. Plus its also the American Indian term for a gay person, which I am so I ended up using it.

History:
Been a lurker of FT since about 2004, not really grasping the concept of mileage runs even though I was a TWA frequent flyer until it folded into American. Lost my miles (wasn't much anyway, I think it was 48,000) since I didn't fly with AA within the specified time and stood miles-less for a few years. Then got the flying bug and started flying with different airlines (DL, B6, AA, BA, HA, CO) until I finally sat down and felt more comfortable (pardon the pun) with United. It was until a year after that, I officially joined FT on 2007.

Even then, still in lurker mode for a whole year until my first post in 2008.

My post count is small, since I like to read and learn as much as possible before I post or feel comfortable enough to not sound like an idiot. (although that might not be the case sometimes) :D But all in all, I've learned alot but still have plenty to learn. This year the FF bug really hit me. Attended my first mileage run seminar this past Aug in ORD, did 2 mileage runs and have increased my miles to qualify me to 1P (short of 14000 for 1K) in one years time. Although with the new UA rules and my work schedule I doubt i'll make it to 1K ever, but damn it I'll keep trying :D

On a side note, want to thank all those that post and contribute to FT and provide such valuable tips and guidance to newbies and old timers alike. Also kudos to the staff for keeping things in line.

Rewards Junkie

Hi,

I am a management consultant with my own small business who is also a rewards junkie. I and my family are members of 20 rewards programs including 9 airline programs, 6 hotel programs, 4 general rewards programs (including Amex MR and Thank You) and Amtrak.

We have a total of 1.1 million points across these 20 programs with the 2 highest being 300K in 2 BA Exec Club accounts (one each for me and my wife) and 270K in 4 Continental OnePass accounts (one for each family member).

Since June 30, we have accumulated a total of approx. 76K points including bonuses from Amex Premier Rewards Gold and Capital One Credit Card.

HI!

My name is Amy Lynn, I stumbled onto this site through another forum and was intrigued...

I run a consumer blog dedicated to finding good deals ( not travel related obviously... ) and after lurking in the forums for a bit, I've found myself wanting to learn more about these travel deals and how they work.

The more I read, the more questions evolved... I have added "travel deals" onto my list of things to master. I'm a fairly determined person, so I plan on getting to know at least a few members here...

As far as traveling is concerned, I enjoy road trips to random places. I'm not much of a flyer, but I'd like to change that. I don't belong to a FF club or honestly understand those programs 100% -- besides the obvious wording of "FF"...

The main reason behind my coming here, at first, was to try to make good on a promise I made my teenage daughter. I owe her a trip.

I wouldn't say I was cheap, I just like getting the biggest and best bang for my buck...

I'm rambling. Without much sleep. I apologize.

Hi I am a young entrepreneur and I started my business 2 years ago. It requires a great deal of traveling and meeting new people on the job. And so far, I am loving every bit of it. :)

lauren_l Nov 22, 2010 9:48 am

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I'm 24 years old and I'm currently studying in Sweden, finishing my master degree in data analysis. I usually fly during the busiest periods of the year (= flying home for Christmas etc.),, but I try to travel as much as possible in general :D
I found this forum when I was searching for some information about Christmas shopping on airports (since I usually fly alone and have some/many hours when transfering,, got to keep myself busy:D) and google directed me here.

My name is Joe and I'm new to the website. I'm based in the Kanas City area and work as an independent consultant for cancer research trials. I spend most of my time on the road visiting various medical centers and have grown pretty accustomed to living out of a suitcase:)

Looking forward to reading to exploring more on this website and getting to know some of my fellow travelers.

Good to see another CRA on here Jules. I've been a CRA for about 10 years and have worked as an Independent Consultant for the past 3 years.

The Miles and Points have been a perk to CRA travel and I've got the chance to go on some pretty amazing vacations at the expense of Marriott. You mentioned Italy and I was able to cash in points for a 10 day Mediterannean Cruise with stops in Rome, Capri, Sicily, and Cinque Terra as well as some nearby countries such as Spain, Tunisia and France. Hope you can find some great deals to use your points wisely!

New to forum

Hi to all. My name is Kevin. My wife and I reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. I came across the forum as I was doing some research for travel products (gadgets and bags).

I lived and studied in Mexico City for a year when I was in college, and I've travelled extensively through Mexico.

My wife and I enjoy budget travel (though we are starting to enjoy spending more as well) and promote the one-bag philosophy to anyone who will listen. We can share our experiences doing self-service laundry from Paris to Rome and beyond. We are also big fans of the eurail pass and have travelled by train on all of our trips to Europe.
