Please record data points in a structured form in this wiki (in addition to posting to the thread):

Date of the offer [mm/dd/yyyy], the offer, how long you had the card and yearly spend)

__________________________________________________ _____________
Tips:

When you call, you MUST ask if there are any offers on your account. Don't ask for an AF waiver, ask if they can credit your account the $95 (or whatever your AF is) to your account. They cannot remove the AF, but they can credit an amount to offset it. If you cancel your card within 30 days of receiving retention bonus, then Chase may claw back that bonus Note that Chase has shortened the period in which you can close the card and get the fee refunded. It is 30 days for most (or all?) cards.

If you don't get a retention bonus, the card you are holding may have the option of a downgrade. Cards that are downgraded may be upgraded at a later date. For example a no-fee Sapphire product exists for downgrade which is not available to new applicants. Consolidated discussion of that topic is here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase...16-onward.html

If you have Ultimate Rewards points in the account you're calling about, try transferring them to another account before calling. For example, if you will ask for a retention on your Sapphire card, transfer the points to your Freedom card in advance.

The archived 2020 edition is here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chas...-archived.html

You become eligible to reapply 48 months after your last Sapphire (Reserve or Preferred) new account bonus posted, not 48 months after you opened the account. If the card is still open you can easily lookup when this occurred, because the PDF statements are available online.

Lucky day. Just called to see if any offers to offset $450 annual fee on CSR. Was transferred to "retention" and spoke with a very nice woman with a wonderful southern accent. She quickly offered me a $250 credit (wow!) if I would agree to keep the card as I explained it wasn't much use until travel resumed. Of course I accepted it. This was my 4th anniversary for this card.

She asked if I had any other requests so I asked about my Marriott Business Visa $99. She promptly offered me $100 credit if I agreed to keep card. Again -- wow!!. I accepted of course.

Very profitable phone call.

I called today (same day as you) and got the same $100 statement credit on my Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business, $100 statement credit with no spend required. Didn't put any spend in 2021, but put some of my restaurant take-out spend on it in 2020.

Date of Call: 2/25/2021
Card: Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business
Offer: $100, no spend required
Length of Card Membership: Since 2019
Annual Spend: $500-1000

Called 3 times, no retention for Hyatt or CSR, though agent said I was getting another year at $450 for CSR. I'm fine with that

Called again for my CSR. Rep said no offers available on my account and said the fact that I renewed for $450 instead of $550 was basically my offer. Will probably still keep the card for another year since it's at $450.

Data point:
- Called number on back of CSR card
- Was told there is no retention offer for me (spent $11K last year, also have 4 other products with Chase)
- Was told that generally retention offers happen closer to the fee date so I should call back in September when my annual fee hits.

Has anyone been able to get the statement credit when they were so far away from their annual fee date?

Maybe I said the wrong thing: "Hi I am thinking of canceling my Sapphire card due to high fees, is there any kind of retention credit or points bonus available to make it worthwhile to continue using the card"?

I saw one post when searching "prorate" in this thread which suggested Chase will give a partial refund of the annual fee. Will Chase also give a prorated refund of the fee when canceling? My last sign up bonus was earned 50 months ago, so it's time to cancel and re-apply.

Also, I understand the 48 month rule. Is there any wait time past cancellation that I need to be aware?

No, only when downgrading. You can downgrade to one of the three Freedom branded cards even if you already hold the same card.

Yes, wait 30 days after cancelation. The wait is only 4 days if you downgrade to one of the Freedom cards.

Called today on my UA Explorer. No offers. Asked for retention department and CSR was going to transfer me, as she was doing that I got disconnected. Called back immediately, no offers, front line CSR wouldnt even transfer me. About $2000 spend in 2020. Is it normal for CSRs to not transfer to retention when asked?

I was given retention offers on 2/25 on CSR and Marriott Business (see post #77 above). How long does this take to post? Agent told me "within one or two statement cycles", but then added that many people have told her that it is faster. When can I expect the credits to show up?
