Please record data points in a structured form in this wiki (in addition to posting to the thread):

Date of the offer [mm/dd/yyyy], the offer, how long you had the card and yearly spend)

__________________________________________________ _____________
Tips:

When you call, you MUST ask if there are any offers on your account. Don't ask for an AF waiver, ask if they can credit your account the $95 (or whatever your AF is) to your account. They cannot remove the AF, but they can credit an amount to offset it. If you cancel your card within 30 days of receiving retention bonus, then Chase may claw back that bonus Note that Chase has shortened the period in which you can close the card and get the fee refunded. It is 30 days for most (or all?) cards.

If you don't get a retention bonus, the card you are holding may have the option of a downgrade. Cards that are downgraded may be upgraded at a later date. For example a no-fee Sapphire product exists for downgrade which is not available to new applicants. Consolidated discussion of that topic is here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase...16-onward.html

If you have Ultimate Rewards points in the account you're calling about, try transferring them to another account before calling. For example, if you will ask for a retention on your Sapphire card, transfer the points to your Freedom card in advance.

The archived 2020 edition is here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chas...-archived.html

United MileagePlus Club Card

Called this morning (1/12) to cancel my Club Card right before the annual fee is set to hit. Was offered a $100 statement credit or the option to downgrade to the Explorer Card. Had upgraded from Explorer to Club last year so I was not eligible for the SUB. Ended up taking the downgrade since I recently signed up for the American Express Platinum.

btw, since i reached the end of my free year, i called chase and asked what could be done about the annual fee. i was genuinely surprised when the only option offered was to downgrade to the no-fee card. given the pandemic you would think they would be ok with a spending challenge? anyway, i took the offer. note that the no-fee card provides only secondary car rental insurance coverage, unlike the paid card where it is primary.

Chase Southwest Priority

Called today about my annual fee ($149) posting next week on my Southwest RapidRewards Priority card. Explained was considering cancelling since I will not be traveling in 2021 and wanted to see what my options were to cancel or downgrade. Was not offered retention offer. Confirmed I had 30 days from when annual fee posted to cancel. I will try again next week and cancel if no offer.

Just curious, is it not 37 days, and when do the 4 upgrades expire from sign up, when the AF posts or do you have 37 days?

If you read a Chase paper or PDF statement you will find that you have 30 days from the date of the statement on which the fee appears. The posting date of the fee is unimportant.

Chase does not tend to give spending challenge type retention offers, at least not as often as Amex or Citi. Looking at the retention offer thread, Chase will sometimes offer a statement credit. For example, last year I received a $50 statement credit on my Marriott Boundless card, with no spending requirement. There are not many recent Chase examples of spend $X, get Y miles or $Z.

My AF just posted after my first year. No retention offer either, so I downgraded to the Gateway no AF card.

Please be aware Alliant has devalued their points. I just cancelled my card with them today over it. They haven't published this change but everyone should be aware of it.

I've got the other one. I'm not spending 10K a month with the kids grown and travel restricted.
