[1] is also part of CX Elite Amex T&C (see clause (6) of https://secure.cmax.americanexpress....enus_CM_En.pdf ). Take it or leave it.

Haven't quite heard of [2] (HSBC definitely can't do this) but I don't see any cause for complaint if they can.

In any case I rather not deal with branches for credit cards but obtain and return forms direct to card centre if I can. Branches don't get commission for admin work, they might misplace the paperwork.

1) for "no miles if late payment", I have just briefly skimmed the T&C posted on their site and can't see that conditions, may be ask the CS to point it out when calling next time?

2) for refund via credit card it's almost given that every bank will deduct your points / miles from it, but then for refund via other channel, they have no means to know it and it certainly won't affect your miles.

1. Clause 6 "good standing" of http://www.dahsing.com/en/pdf/credit...miles_tc_e.pdf can be interpreted to mean making at least minimum payments.

2. the normal treatment is to create a negative points balance on the card to be made good by future spending. The negative points balance may be monetised if the card is cancelled with a negative points balance. Clawing back miles directly is rare.

I don't think Amex does this for their CX Amex.

CX AMEX doesnt. You will get a negative balance on your CX AMEX statement.

No it isn't. You must be misled by the way of calculation.

Spending $100, with Citi, you get: Basic: $100/6=16.67miles. Relationship Bouns: $100*20%/12 = 1.67 miles.

In total what you get is 18.33 miles which is less than the 20miles you get from BEA.

But I agree with you that Citibank offers a wide range of program which is a big advantage over BEA. And even at $5/AM vs $6/AVIOS, I will still go for AVIOS.

Doh... you are right. Thanks for pointing this out. It should be $12/(2+x%) per mile. So even if you max out the relationship points, it's $5.217 per mile.

No "it's got a Tip column, so it's dining?"

HSBC will be able to see Merchant Category Code until the next morning after the transaction. I will generally get the MCC before leaving the restaurant (no matter how asinine or anti-social it is, see below) and if it's not dining, ask the waiter to void slip and use another card (like BEA Flyer World).

The following is the best counter-example:

On the other hand, not all hotels are bad - even a banquet venue in certain hotels (preferably non-chain so they don't have their own MCC codes) can be dining, such as Park Lane banqueting below:

Asinine things I've done to make sure I earn the dining spending include:

1. When paying for last year's 14/2 dinner deposit, I called SCB (I was playing their dining promo at the time) and asked for Amber's MCC:
"There's no charge yet"
"The waiter's just pressed the button. Try again"
"It's 5812"

2. The banquet above - I wasn't even a guest but a a friend of mine has dining 6X and paying. I went down to Park Lane during 送客 to test the card terminal.

The bill was 6 figures. I charged the odd figure (namely, $449.80) in Park Lane's dingy banquet back-office behind the Churchill Rooms and got HSBC on the phone. After confirming with two CS it's dining, I had my friend charge the 6-figure remainder. The bride's mother was steaming but we held her down by saying that more than 60,000 miles were involved.

If you do come up against a chain hotel like Shangri-La above, it may help to use HSBC Diamond Unionpay. Restaurants like Man Ho in the Marriott come up as 3509 Mariott International for V/M and 5812 Dining for Unionpay. But you still have to check.
Thanks Percysmith. Excuses my ignorance, where can I find MCC on the ROC (record of charge)? So what should be the correct MCC for dining outlet thanks?

Merchant Category Codes 5812, 5813 and 5814 http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...hp?id=6911&p=2

You can't tell them from the ROC. Must call 2233 3000

There used to be an advantage in converting online from Standard Chartered points to Asia Miles in that one can effectively buy more. That no longer exists. Am I right?

HSBC adds 2% (5,250 miles) to the 22,500 miles for $17,500 spending promo 10 Jan-28 F

Original promo: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...-157.html#2355

Cap on the 4% is 100RC i.e. $2,500 per week

If you haven't started now's the time to start - 8 weeks to go and you only need to buy $2,500 for seven weeks to get $17,500

From a security point of view AM website is very flimsy - basically anyone with your AM number and DOB can take over your account. Log on with your own hardware (smartphones, laptops) if you can and not use public/lounge computers http://loyaltylobby.com/2014/03/19/w...es-keyloggers/
