Manufactured Spending

Something I haven't read much about in this thread so far (besides the usual Manning's HSBC promotions) is manufactured spending in HK. Anyone have any experience with this? Tons of threads for doing this in the US on FT, but not sure about a Hong Kong-specific thread.

Sorry if this has been discussed recently and I missed it, but does anyone remember what's supposed to be the posting date for the 1000 bonus RC from the promotion HSBC ran in September for HK$20,000 spending?

Incremental to HSBC Redhot Winter Shop Promo

Today I received a snail mail promo letter for the Red Hot Winter Shop-together Rewards, that in addition to the normal 6% rebate, if my spending exceed the assigned spending target, I will get an 2% extra RewardCash for the part exceed the target.

Not too attractive, but a nice addition if you can combine with other promo (such as oversea spending bonus / local dining bonus)

YMMV though .... especially great if you didn't go buy those voucher yet!

Yes Flyer World will move to $5/mile w.e.f. 9 February 2014. And will include non-tax/insurance/education bills and AAVS too.

I was initially reluctant to list the earn rate for this card as I saw no obvious way to apply or the card and thse who have the card knew what the new earn rate is - this situation is a bit akin to Shacom PLK Titanium card who did not accept new applications after the 6X promotion was announced but existing cardholders were able to enjoy the promotional rate.

But the gist of the flyformiles post (derek2010 drawn my attention to this) was that BEA is still accepting applications for upgrades for Platinum cardholders (supposedly this period should have ended on 27 June 2014), so a non-BEA cardholder can now still apply for a BEA Platinum card and immediately apply for an upgrade to Flyer World as soon as the card has been acknowledged. I called twice tonight with my other (not upgraded) BEA Platinum Towngas card and it appears what derek2010 and flyformiles said was right.

Is there a divergence between the BEA World Master and the Flyer World with regard to AAVS? See wiki re exclusions. If so, would be very strange...

AAVS should count for all World Cards. I don't think derek2010 intended to note an exclusion for AAVS on supremegold world. Anyway I tidied up the entry.

I'm wondering should BEA Flyer World displace both DBS Black and SCB Worldmiles as the general best earning local card in the beginners list. It's best of class for general spending, bill payment except education/insurance and AAVS. It's biggest shortcomings (education/insurance and overseas) are perfectly covered by Fubon Plat (so Fubon should stay). Any thoughts?

Re Insurance - Bill Payment, it seems that following the recent changes to the BEA cards, the only option is to use Fubon Plat? I have cut that card a few years back because I don't like the short duration of their points expiry + don't really know if they will cut their ties with AM each year.

Apart from Fubon Plat, any good credit card for insurance bill payment? Seems no points from BEA, no points from Citibank, no points from Dah Sing, no points from StanChart. The only option is CCB and HSBC? But their base rates are not great. CCB is 15:1 and HSBC is 16.7:1. Any thoughts on this?

Or you could double dip by using percysmith's two card trick for tax payments, i.e. pay the bill with CCB CUP and then pay off your CCB card from HSBC. That should yield something better than 8:1 since, unlike tax, you'll get bonus points from both banks.

Or, slightly OT, if you also collect Krisflyer miles, the BoC Sing air card is 10:1 and I don't see insurance payments listed among it's exclusions.

Thanks dgittings. The CCB/HSBC is good. Yes, that way would generate 7.894:1AM.

This applies to insurance paid via online banking. What about insurance paid by credit-card auto-pay. This should not fall under the bill payment exclusion. So the best card to use for these auto-pay insurance payment would still be BEA Flyer? Just want to confirm if my understanding is correct. Thanks.

Insurance auto-pay is eligible for 1.6X per BEA CS. I don't see anything in T&C suggesting she's wrong.

If your insurer doesn't do autopay/doesn't do autopay on BEA Flyer World then either Fubon or HSBC-->CCB CUP. CCB CUP has an annual earn limit of 12 times credit limit per year on premium payments.

Sounds like the new basic set up could be:

1) HSBC -> Dining
2) Citibank rewards -> telecoms/supermarket
3) CCB/HSBC -> Tax/insurance
4) BEA Flyer -> general use

That sounds it covers everything, and I can cut the bankcomm dual currency / DBS cards (unless there's a reason to keep them even if I'm not planning to use them?)

Dah Sing to opt-in e-statements w.e.f. 1 Feb 15

http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...w.php?id=13801

For those utterly dependent on banks (at least HK ones) mailing statements (like me unfortunately) opt-out here https://www.dahsing.com/jsp/resume_s...t_input_en.jsp

Seems like renewing Prestige better than churning it (something I planned to do was to have the missus apply for it and I cut mine after).
