You have to cancel your full-fare seat before you book the redemption.
That's not tricky.
Tricky thing is - do you have the return flight? If not, you may be buying a very expensive one-way.

I didn't book any full fare seats...I'm just on the waiting list for the outbound flight (re redeeming my flight award with my points). Seems like a little bit of a lottery, but at least I have a return flight.

Impossible to Redeem
YVR - HKG
Is this route impossible to redeem in Premium Economy? There are 2-3 direct flights a day and the availability is literally zero..
I have checked the availability and excluding the next 7 days there is not one flight available with 2 PEY for the whole of August, September, October & most of November. Surely this cannot be right?
I am waitlisted on the below flights in PEY for 2 persons:
CX837 6th Oct
CX889 7th Oct
CX855 7th Oct
Im just wondering if i am wasting my time wait listing and if i should just purchase the cash fares instead. Its my first time on this route so i am not familiar with the probabilities. All i know is this looks like the hardest route i have ever tried to redeem!
Thanks all

Currently got this itin. If my only chances of space opening up is the last few days then it will be too late to ticket since I only just have enough Miles for the round trip redemption (108k)

HKG-JFK - cleared
JFK-Vancouver - cleared
Vancouver - HKG waitlisted

If this was a straight round trip CX/KA redemption, if you redeem two one-ways under one booking, you are entitled to refund of the difference between two one-ways and return miles after the travel has been completed.
But this does not apply where a stopover is involved. Even if all segments are CX (the example I was given was HKG-oTPE-NRT, NRT-HKG is not eligible for refund)

Scenario 1 - change date
HKG-NYC (flown)
NYC-Vancouver (flown)
Vancouver-HKG - I want to change date
25usd /1000 miles - this should be ok right?
Scenario 2 - reroute
HKG-NYC (flown)
NYC-Vancouver (flown)
Vancouver-HKG - I want to reroute to LAX-HKG
I can't find anywhere that tells me if a reroute/reissue is possible on a partially used award ticket? Can I pay the 120USD/10,000 Miles to reroute or will they just refuse since it's a partially used ticket? Does anyone have a concrete answer on this?
Thanks a lot!

Scenario 1:
25 USD/1,000 AM if you can rebook it online
40 USD/4,000 AM if you rebook by phone (even if you cannot do so online due to CX's system failure)
Scenario 2: cannot reroute (reissue) part-flown tickets
25 USD/1,000 AM if you can rebook it online
40 USD/4,000 AM if you rebook by phone (even if you cannot do so online due to CX's system failure)
Scenario 2: cannot reroute (reissue) part-flown tickets

Using "Flexible travel dates (+/- 3 days)", all classes on and all dates within a week are searched and displayed.
You can even try Priority Awards Tier 1 and 2 if you want to; unfortunately, nothing more there over Standard Awards.
