Lowest price with a Railcard is £25.20 return and this is changeable at £10 fee plus fare difference up until the time of departure. Let's not wheel out the usual comparison of bargain-basement restricted air fares to walk-up rail fares please.

Respect to LRD for posting this on the Mileage Run forum:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/milea...494-ai-rt.html

Basically, when booked on the AA website, an economy return from LHR to NYC (and various other US cities) can often be reduced by around £100 return if you do the following:

-Search on aa.com using 'all carriers' for the dates required.
-Book an AY codeshare on BA metal for the UK-US leg
-Book an IB codeshare on BA metal for the US-UK leg

A sample booking for 6-10 March is coming in at £332 (!). I haven't seen a return TATL fare at that level for some time.

More tips on the linked thread.

That's an amazing find!

I just did a 'what if' booking for March LHR-JFK on the AA UK website and found AY op BA 777 outbound and IB op BA 747 (daytime flight) inbound for £333.08 plus c.c. charge.

It's some years since I TATL'ed in economy but this could be survivable. Presumably earning 2x Avios (as silver) and WT TPs, it's attractive.

You don't get a status bonus on AY, and discount economy earns 25% as of now.

But you would at least get the same earn rate as BA on the IB flight I think?

Depends on the booking fare code, it is mostly the same but there are some differences.

The marketing carrier matters, in this case AY and IB, even though the flight is operated by BA.

+1 The dates I was looking at over the past couple of days have now returned to normal. I should have pushed the button when I had the chance!

At teast that's better than the ba.com calculator shich shows 0 and 0 for AY and correct Avios and TPs for IB.

This was always guaranteed to be the case, as I'm going to need to book a TATL flight next week.

Besides the UK sale (to various odd places), there's a sale fare from MAD at the moment. Fare basis I3APALE
Code:
Sales restrictions

RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE AND TICKETS ISSUED ON/BEFORE
  24JUL 13.
e.g. £1550 MAD-NYC, £1800 MAD-SFO in J

Edit: I just did a random search for sales and it turns out that I7SALE is still on to some destinations, e.g. CUN,GUA. Tickets must be issued by Aug 22. FCO-LHR//LGW-CUN £1850

Once I traveled return from LON to EDI for £10. It was a special regular customer celebration promotion thingy. It was pre-East Coast, needless to say: "no wonder that National Express East Coast went down."
