Understanding GUF2

A question for the BAEC eggheads:
What's the definitive rule around TP earning rate using jokers and GUF1/2?
I've had two cases, with exactly the same circumstances but different outcomes.
Case #1
Purchase CW. Used joker and GUF1 to upgrade to First. MMB showed earn at First rate. TP was earned at First rate at the end of the trip.
Case #2
Purchase WT+. Used joker and GUF1 to upgrade to CW. MMB showed earning at WT+ rate. Have yet to fly - Will find out what the actual rate of credit is.
So far, for all my GUF1/2 used for myself and family, MMB has shown TP earn at the higher rate. Upon completion of trip, BAEC accounts were credited at the higher, cabin-flown rate. I'm surprised in Case #2 above, MMB is showing earn at the WT+ rate.
I understand that Avios upgrades will earn TP at the cabin-purchased rate (although at times, we've had this credited at the cabin-flown rate!). But are GUF1/2 vouchers treated in the same way as Avios, with respect to TP earn for upgrades?

All mine have been given at the upgraded cabin rate. It's books into a revenue class, not like an avios upgrade so wouldn be hard for computer to differentiate it. As always don't rely on the higher tier points as doesn't happen in all case. Most recent case study was a few days ago to KUL and got higher TP's. This was WT+ to CW.

There is a procedure that TAs are supposed to follow to make sure this happens.
If you are getting the higher rate, I would keep quiet about it.

I'd second that. There are some things best not discussed or disclosed on flyertalk.
For clarity, you should always earn at the rate of the cabin paid for, not the rate of the cabin upgraded to.

Just to hopefully clarify something
To use a GUF2 on a avios booking say,, you will effectively need availability in both the original cabin an upgraded cabin?
Ie book into business (U),
Then call to upgrade to first (P?).
Say only P is available but not U, then I suppose you can't just directly say use a GUF2 to book into P (whilst charging U points?).
Guess it will be quite restrictive for me without a joker..

If you book in two steps (first the Avios booking then applying the GUF2) then yes you need availability in both cabins. However you should be able to book directly into P (either online or by calling) in which case only availability in the final cabin Is needed.

Correct. If done in one step, GUF is part of "payment / avios " so only need the upgraded cabin to have availability. For First, that's Z.

Hi, GUF2 newbie here. Been trying to apply it to AMS-LHR-HKG-BKK Club to First.
TA says can't be applied with CX flights in the booking.
Only permitted with BA flights and BA code share flights? Sorry if already covered.

This is correct. BA will not approve the use of the GUF if your TA sends the booking to BA including non BA flights.
