I am looking for a one way rental from Ljubljana, Slovenia to Split, Croatia in Oct.

Although I know we could save a bundle, we do not wish to spend a day returning and then picking a new car up at the border. That's worth a hundred or so $$ to us but the rates are over $1100 for 6 days!!

Apparently, Eastern European one way rentals are not bookable online and I am concerned about giving a list of random AWD codes to a CS rep on the phone. Do I have anything to worry about?

We do not drive automatics much in Europe and least of all in Italy. Why not learn how to drive a manual? We all have to learn to drive automatics when we come to the US or Canada.

I drive manual, but one thing to keep in mind is it becomes quite a bit more difficult driving a manual in a country like Britain or South Africa or Thailand (which I've done) where they drive on the wrong side of the road. This means that you're shifting with your left hand!

You don't "learn" to drive automatic - there is nothing to learn ;). This is not "when in Rome..." thing, i just want a more practical product. And i have no problem with others using manual.. or rotary phones... or sundials... :D

The automotive industry spent many years and many millions of $ improving cars to make them automatic and I would like to take advantage of the end result.

The AWD seems to be hit and miss - sometimes excellent discount, sometimes no so good. I can't find a pattern, just try it.

I suggest no-one bothers using this 25 year old code as it is an Avis staff code for employees only! This from recent personal experience at LHR.................

Booked a 10 day car hire online using code. At LHR, I was asked for my Avis employee ID, as it was a staff code. I argued it was a public code, to no avail.
I ended up paying rack rate, around 100 GBP more.
Elaboration over and chalked up to one of lifes experiences.

You do know of course that Slovenia is EU, Croatia is not, and it would be doubtful they would let you do it, online or not.
Why not get the train to the Croat border, even Zagreb, and carry on from there. You also need to buy a highway pass for Slovenia, approx 25 Euros which would ad to the cost unless it's already included.

Nothing to learn? You hit the pedal with two feet as you are used to using the clutch so you have to unlearn that reaction.

Simply put you can have an automatic but you will have to pay for it as they are the exception rather than the rule. Sorry this is very much when in Rome - if I came to the USA fat chance I'd get of having a manual if I were mad enough to want one.

I would also just warn you that this is Italy as you will find reading here that they may have one automatic per station and if it is not there you may have a problem. I hope that you don't but forewarned is forearmed. I strongly suggest that you call them before you arrive and speak to the Station Manager and tell him that you have to have an automatic.

It is ok and in fact even desirable to drive on the wrong side of the road if you are in a country where EVERYONE else seems to be driving on the wrong side of the road also. In those cases, even I drive on the wrong side of the road.;):D:D:D;)
