Does anyone know if Lifemiles will waive cancellation fees for an award ticket due to COVID-19 concerns?
Unfortunately, barring an outright flight cancellation, Lifemiles will not waive cancel fees.
Just pay the $200 as a "self caution fee". (nobody is actually preventing you the passenger from flying as you booked).
In the future, it would be wise to invest in travel insurance.

Transferring Amex MR points will extend expiration of LM. Post #906 confirms this. Expiration date updates overnight, so wait 24 hours after the transferred miles have posted to LM.

Miles Expiration Policy valid from April 15th , 2018.
- Any miles accrual transaction in a member´s account in the Program extends the validity of the miles in the account of such member for a term of twelve (12) months from the date of such accrual of miles. Other transactions that may affect the balance of miles in a member’s account, including redemption transactions, will have no effect on them and will not extend the validity of the miles in such account. If I book a UA domestic flight with LM in economy, am I getting "basic economy" or "regular"? The flight I'm considering is actually a United Express on Mesa.

It should be regular. Keep in mind you can cancel for free all US originating flights within 24 hours of booking with Lifemiles.

I just recently found out about the Avianca and Turkish award flights within the US for 7,500 miles. Avianca would be easier for me as I already have the points in my Amex account. I could get a Citi Premier card w/ 60k TY points and that would cover the 4 domestic US tickets.
My questions is - is Avianca so much of a headache to deal with that it's worth it to open another card in order to get the tickets from Turkish Airlines?

I'm wondering whether to open a LifeMiles account. I don't intend to really travel via Avianca, mostly to use it to book flights on other Star Alliance flights.
It's asking me for 'National Id' and number. I reside in the US. I certainly do not want to provide them with my US SS#, and am reluctant to give them drivers license ID.
Would 'Known traveler number' from the TSA do ? I could give US passport number, but since I don't plan to actually travel with Avianca, I'm even reluctant to give them that. My concern is mostly ID theft and privacy.

If you want to redeem flights with Lifemiles you often have to ask them to create bookings manually, part of that involved emailing the photo page of your passport. So they're going to be asking for that sort of information at some time.
