NOTE: This thread has been superseded by the thread entitled LM F and J routes (and the occasional trick-it) Rebooted v2.0. Please follow the discussion there.

Region definitions
C1 North America
C1.5 Caribbean, Bermuda
C2 Europe
C2.5 Middle East
C3 Asia
C4 South America
C5 Africa
C6 Oceania

2X, 3X: in the context of this LifeMiles thread, 2X and 3X refer to any 2nd and 3rd legs of a one-way award ticket.

LifeMiles' Star Alliance Award Chart

Cash & Miles redemptions: buying the max (60%) isn't always the best deal (unless you're purchasing all miles right there). Check here for the best CPM.

Beware of Cabotage: LifeMiles has been known to issue tickets that constitute Cabotage, and at least one instance of denied boarding has been reported, stranding the passenger. An easily-seen example is travel on Copa from LAX to SJU (via PTY).

Indeed, if F is removed from 1/3 of the long haul fleet, this certainly is substantial.

I am aware of:
FRA-BKK (LH772/773 eff. 31may14)
FRA-KUL/CGK (eff 31may14)
FRA-PHL (eff 1jun14)
FRA-DXB (eff 1jun14)
FRA-SEA (eff 1jul14)
FRA-DFW (eff 28jul)
FRA-IKA

I was thinking about this:
1. Let's say I fly C2 (MUC, VIE, ...) - C3 (ICN, TYO,BKK, ...) - XYZ
2. I don't need a visa for the C3 country but would need one for XYZ
3. But I also decide that I'm not going to check any bags

In this case, I could just check-in online, go to the plane and that's it?

Or would the C2-C3 (e.g. MUC-ICN) flight have any special checks?
usually, you wont be able to check in online if there are visa restrictions.

No - if you checkin for XYZ which needs a visa you will not be able to board the plane without it. And als already written online checkin will most likely not work as you will get a message that the documents have to be checked.

And often you will have to provide a proof of a ticket leaving XYZ.

Depends on your luck at check-in. To be on the safe side you could get a visa for some 40ish Euros or buy a refundable ticket out of xyz

40 euros isn't the problem... but some countries require an invitation letter.

There are agencies providing full visa support, including sourcing an invitation. The fee will be higher but maybe worth it for peace of mind. Plus less hassle waiting at the embassy.

Or, if you want to obtain the visa yourself, hotels may actually offer an invitation service (for which you don´t necessarily have to book a room) for a small feewhich will give you the invitation letter straight away. Try http://www.tambov-hotel.ru/eng/visa-support.htm

Nice thinking pattern.

However, you forget that there is also an agent at the boarding gate.

Sure you could be lucky.

I would always say that my visa was issued at the Embassy of XYZ in Seoul and that the visa is waiting for me at ICN and is being delivered prior to boarding my final flight to XYZ. Carrying a copy if a completed Visa Application ( which of course was never filed) may offer additional safety.

IME, the buying a refundable ticket out of XYZ back to XYZ-1 route is more likely to fail to satisfy an airline check-in or gate agent than the "I'm getting my visa/travel docs for XYZ at XYZ-1 location and at XYZ-1 they will see my visa (or not board me to XYZ as they check for visas there)". In other words, if you are going to pick a refundable ticket method to try to satisfy an airline rep, pick another country (preferably one not needing a visa and/or for which you already have visas) and make sure it's going to be acceptable under TIMATIC.

By the way, once you do something like this, having the stamps in your passport that show you have done this before for a given routing may help. I know it's helped me out before more than a few times.

Good idea... but the check-in or boarding gate agent could still reject you?

I had very similiar journey in feb 14.

With a polish travel agency I got a visa, costed me 150 eur, no return ticket needed.

Had no luggage, did OLCI (only for this one segment on a specific european airline), nobody was interested in seeing my visa. Used only first segment to Asia and that's it. (it was not muc icn, but the same trick)

Unusual TATL F availability being reported by blogs.
Any way to take advantage of it with LM without drinking maple syrup?
