Data point:
Applied for Gold Delta AMEX - January 2009; Cancelled December 2009
Applied for Gold Delta AMEX - November 2010; Cancelled September 2011
I applied for the 70K offer using the workaround and was not instant approval. I immediately looked at my application status on AMEX website and I was approved. On my two prior apps, I received the 25K skypesos after first purchase. Will report back if I get all 70K or if I only get 45K after $5K in spend.

Just adding another data point. After reading all the concern about AMEX being prompted to do a financial review I tried going the flight booking route. When I got to the page with the offer banner (30K miles) I checked the box to learn more and clicked "enter passenger details" and another box popped up with the 70K offer. I applied and got the 14-day review message so I'll wait and see what happens.
UPDATE: I checked my application status here and it says approved; I should receive the card within 7-10 days.

Oh I see it now! I don't know why I never thought to click on that asterisk until you mentioned so, but I got the same spending requirements as aresay said previously, which would make it 77.5k instead of 72.5k.

You that aren't currently holding on to a Delta Gold Amex, man, am I ever envious! This is a bombshell offer. I imagine that it will soon dissappear. In 5 plus years, I had NEVER seen such a good deal. Oh well, maybe I'll get lucky next time around (but I doubt it).

75000 miles for $5000 spend basically (70k + 5k from spend).
Comes out to 15 miles per dollar, which is pretty good regardless. Also if you value $100 to be 10000 miles, then that's 85000 miles, which comes out to 17 miles per dollar
Also, I think the approval process for this card is essentially AUTOMATIC with the exception of those with delinquencies on their accounts.
I've tried applying one of my relatives with a fairly horrible credit (no delinquencies but late/missed payments, consolidations) just for kicks and they actually APPROVED it. Goes to say the approval is pretty loose on this offer. May help some people trying to squeeze out extra miles ^^

Agreed! I am plotting strategy on the $5,000 as I wait for the cards. I do a lot of work that is reimbursed in whole so that is my first line of attack, second I saw someone suggest the free after rebate strategy to get the spend level met, any other suggestions? I am always learning from this group!

Seems to be fine still this morning. Applied and got the 14 day wait screen. Had an email in my inbox about 10 minutes later- i did print the full offer terms before submitting my app so hopefully the 70 will be the correct offer when i call in to confirm when i receive it. Thanks OP!

Just a Thank You!
Thank You to Everyone at FT. You guys are so smart. I've been nervous because my application page originally said under review and I never received any emails about my application. Thanks to you, I learned how to check the status online. And I was approved! I am so, so happy! I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate everyone here on FT!!!!
