Hi omaralt - this CLT delay has affected me before, causing me to miss an intl connex at IAD - you may want to attempt getting on standby for the earlier CLT-IAD AA5502 16:00-16:56 or actually just paying to change your AA ticket to this earlier flight....
Another option would be to change your AA ticket for arrival into DCA around 17:00 on one of the hourly CLT-DCA flights, allowing enough time for baggage pickup/transit taxi to IAD/recheck-in, security at IAD (entire process could take up to 3-5 hours) to make your connection IAD-AUH leaving at 22:00!
Just some suggestions so you don't miss the EY flight to AUH.

Yes, change fee after the flight is canceled? Ridiculous in my book.
OP could have asked for anything that was available. OP if I were you I would have forced them to route me LAX-HKG-SYD-AKL, CX/QF combo. It could have taken similar time but I am VERY sure they would do if for INVOL, and fly partners in zee booking ticket to show how little faith we have with AA

Since they had no hotels for us, was not about to put Mrs Zabes64 on a 14.5 hour flight then a 3.5h flight after being stuck in an airport for 19 hours.
We were not given meal vouchers either.

Rather dismal performance over the last few weeks. An average of 3-4 hours delayed every flight this week with the exception of a single, 1-hour delay.

They offered lax-syd-akl arriving 31 hours late and considering we had a 3hr drive upon arrival to Rotorua and roads can get icy at night, we'd lose 2 full days.

You need to push it to other carriers airlines, including ANZ. It's just ridiculous for two days of delay. You should have asked for full day of meal vouchers before your flight to SYD. At this point I don't know how we can trust AA operations. Just make them put you into partner airlines and be done with it. Google flights are always your friend when trying to figure out the rerouting options. The options they gave you were the most cost-effective for them. I would never take their option unless it makes perfect sense for me.

I'm spending a full day at LAX right now due to AA mess ups for my flight to Dublin (via JFK on AA A321 First).
Speaking to one of the AA staff at the Flagship lounge; she told me that a flight to Rio was delayed 24 hours yesterday making a bunch of people miss the Olympic Opening Ceremony. She said it was a union thing; the crew was 5 minutes over their max time.
Not totally sure I believe her; she also told me that should couldn't help me because my flight was purchased with AS miles (even though it was AA "mechanical" issues that made me miss my connection today). I called AS and they said; yeah, it's AA's issue. I spoke to another AA rep in the Flagship lounge at LAX and she got me set up on a BA flight in J to London instead.

How did it go down? Where did you hear about the cancellation? Sitting at FL hearing that or in the aircraft?

They were still talking and then 15s later, guy on the speaker said, ok it's canceled.
So I had immediately pulled up EF and saw the NZ flights were already 0'd and now AA83 was also 0'd.
There were other options I could have pushed, like CX in the AM LAX-HKG-AKL arriving at 10:00 so 27h10m later, but no way Mrs. Zabes64 was doing 14 hours to HKG and then 10 hours to AKL.
Like I said, we chose to invoke Trip in Vain which apparently as I'm finding out only the AA employees seem to know about, the US employees just wanted to charge us fees.
Trip ended in IAD at 18:25 on Thursday so 28h30m later and it ended with Mrs. Zabes64 having a bag missing, stolen, lost (however you want to phrase it) from the overhead bin from First Class, since she waited from me in Economy (yes I gave her the only First Class seat available on the flight), and by the time we got her bag, realized her other small bag was taken.
So end of the trip mirrored the rest of it. Baggage claim report and police report filed, yay.
Sent an email off to an Executive and Ms. Rubin's former Admin Asst, interested to see what comes or doesn't come of it.

Does anyone know what's really going on with AA215 (LAX-GRU) right now?
Google is reporting the attached image, but FlightAware simply doesn't have anything about the flight from the 4th, which was allegedly (by Google) 23 hours and 59 minutes late.
I checked the GRU arrivals list and there's only one flight scheduled to arrive at 2:05pm today.

There cannot be two AA215's in the air at the same time so the flight from the 4th will have a different flight number, ATC and flight tracking wise...

Sweet, so you are saying that basically AA had to purchase me a paid ticket on BA? I wonder if AS will know that it is the replacement for my original award flight and won't give me miles for it. Not that I would expect miles for it, but bonus if they do!

This can confuse tracking websites like flightaware or flightradar, but is allowed by ATC.

This is not quite true; as has been noted, AA has a habit of using the same flight number on a TATL and on a domestic flight scheduled to go after the TATL arrives, and there have been plenty of times when the TATL was delayed enough that it and the domestic flight were airborne at the same time under the same flight number.

Anyone know what has been going on with AA164, the 8:30am SFO-JFK departure? Of the past 13 flights, only 5 have been on time or close to it. The others have been delayed by 3-5 hours.
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL164
On some or most days when the flight is delayed, it has waited for the frame from the first AM flight of the day into SFO (either AA9 or AA15), instead of using a frame that has RON'd. Some guy (@AirlineFlyer) has been tweeting that the BOS utilization flights that the A321Ts fly routinely get delayed, resulting in knock-on delays for the westbound transcons--could this be related?
