Welcome to the 2016 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)[/LIST]
NOTE: The older AA NEWBIE LOUNGE post thread is here

There should be that option, but if you can't see it calling is always a good bet

It sounds a bit as if it is not ticketed yet, does it show as "ticketed"? Rather than wait it would probably be best to call. If it's the same price the agent will probably be able to do a change rather than cancel and rebook.

Wife commented on her AA flight in J from JFK-LAX. She said that the A321 was nice but when compared to the DL flight she took on an A330 on the same route in October, the Delta plane wins hands down. I guess the widebody really is leaps and bounds better than the A321. Also, Delta flight attendants get the nod. Closer attention to detail plus they came around more frequently than that of her AA flight. All in all, if the mileage requirements are decent on AA, she would fly them again

Yes, it does show "ticketed". Eventually, I rang them and an agent confirmed I could cancel it with a full refund. I got a document(?) number from the agent and did the refund request online, but the website says "subject to review". Is it likely that I won't get a full refund? I need to make another booking, I dont know what to do...

The change costs me another 250 pounds, which is almost half the original ticket price, so I decided to cancel it and make a new booking with a bit different routing.

If it was cancelled within 24h of booking, it shouldn't be an issue. No worries.

Thanks apeortdz! Yes, it's within 24 hours and the agent confirmed the refund, but I had never done the request, which worried me. I have done the request, just keeping fingers crossed...!

Update - ORC on American

This is a mileage run. Will I get 19K EQM for the involuntary change? Please let me know ASAP as I could try to change all the flights now to still fly to HKG on a different routing. Obviously, returning home is a lot better than sitting on plane for 20 hours but don't want to miss out on the EQM.
Just wanted to update everyone. I received full ORC despite the very strange rebooking back to my starting destination. Customer Service understood immediately that I was trying to achieve EP and credited the flight. They also gave me both redeemable miles and a 15K mile courtesy deposit. All in, I qualified for EP and earned 34K redeemable miles on $600 ticket! Thanks for the guidance.

Congratulations, and thanks for updating us! Maybe best Original Routing Credit story ever.

Hey friends.
I am beating my head against a wall. So frustrated.
My wife and I have been gifted with a couple weeks vacation in the beginning of Jan, and I have EP and about 320k miles. We can go (and are interested) in just about ANYWHERE that's warm.
But searching for stuff is an absolute mission. The BA search is horrific -- I have to click on individual dates for individual routing legs. EP desk wasn't too helpful.
What am I missing? There's gotta be an easier way to just find out where in the world we can go on mileage redemption.

(I've tried various ways of getting to Australia, Thailand, and just plan getting to Doha to get out of there on Qatar).

I'd start with Google Flights with AA or OW as the airline. That should be able to give you relative prices, which should roughly correlate to the number of miles needed. It would narrow things down, at least.

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it.
What I'm seeing is not even a question of if we have enough miles -- it's availability at ALL.

You don't say where you are starting from but it tends to be the case that quite a few people in places where it is cold in January try to go to places where it is warm and award flights are snapped up a year ahead. People might be able to help better if you reveal at least your country of origin.

Edit: I see your location is Chicago area, the BA reference confused me.
That's a good point. Our home airport is RDU in North Carolina.
The BA reference is (to my understanding) the only way to check availability on partners like Qatar, as AA does not show award availability on them.

Oops, when I went back I looked at the wrong profile! Thanks for setting the record straight.
