Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)[/LIST]

Thanks MADPhil....I opted to gamble and see what/if I would be offered for FC at check in. AA wanted $55 for the upgrade and I took it as this made the total cost for my ticket around $120. Had I called before check in to upgrade I would have paid a total of $288!

Safe travels to ALL!

No, went J for ORD-NRT. I would have flat refuse that, I paid 4X the price for a good reason my back can't take 12+ hours in coach.

It's just my trip went from YFJJ service to YJJ. Not the end of the world as long as I get the ORC for the missed segment and the miles.

Airplane maintenance issue - complete re route ruining mileage run. Will I get ORC??

Urgent - AAdvantage desk is closed so I can't get a straight answer. I was booked LGA-DFW-HKG-LAX-JFK departing 12/4 and arriving JFK early morning 12/6. After I boarded my first flight to DFW, there was an airplane maintenance issue for DFW-HKG that would cause me to miss connections. The system automatically rerouted me back to JFK (from Dallas). This is a mileage run. Will I get 19K EQM for the involuntary change? Please let me know ASAP as I could try to change all the flights now to still fly to HKG on a different routing. Obviously, returning home is a lot better than sitting on plane for 20 hours but don't want to miss out on the EQM.

To be clear; you booked LGA-DFW-HKG HKG-LAX-JFK.

but as you flew LGA-DFW, due to issue with DFW-HKG, AA auto-rebooked you to just LGA-DFW-JFK?

If so, this would entitle you to trip in vain refund, but not the miles-- so you have to "fight back" on that if you want the miles, from my reading of it.

Or, at the very least, a discussion, with a writing, with AA, indicating that you are -not- seeking trip in vain refund BUT specifically and explicitly will receive elite qualifying original routing credit.

Does AA consider bookings on two consecutive flights A-B to be duplicate and will they cancel them? There's no overlap- it would be technically possible to fly both if I had a private jet returning me B-A immediately.

This is the verbiage in the Conditions of Carriage:

Duplicate and impossible/illogical bookings: Duplicate or impossible/illogical American Airlines bookings are prohibited without prior authorization from American Airlines. A duplicate or impossible/illogical booking includes, but is not limited to, bookings for the same passenger on flights traveling on or about the same date between one or more of the same or nearby origin and/or destination (such as JFK to DFW and LGA to DFW or DFW to LAX and DFW to ONT), or bookings with connections that depart before the arrival of the inbound flight.
I want to book both with avios and cancel one when my schedule firms up.

Thanks, Jon. Any idea how likely it is they will give me the EQMs? Can I be honest that the trip was intended to secure EP qualification? If you think it's a long shot, should I try now to rebook something similar that takes me to Asia and back on a different routing?

If AA finds these it is likely one of these will be cancelled.

There's nothing in the Conditions of Carriage forbidding mileage runs. As AA cancelled, you should be able to rebook to Hongkers using available flights without change fees, etc. You do not have to accept automatically created rebookings, but it does make it easier if you can find space and flights and hand feed it to an agent.

That sounds like a pretty good deal - well done! There must not have been many elite upgrade requests on that flight.

You can be 100% honest for sure! As far as I know, I'm not personally aware of (m)any examples of them agreeing to "how 'bout you keep the fare, I get the EQMs?" but you can certainly ask. Answer would have to be unambiguous and in writing-- don't take any "well, I'll make a note in the record..." type answers.

Barring that, you can try and rebook on this ticket # or refund and rebook entirely-- but they -should- help you figure it out regardless.

Hey folks,

I just have a question. I am short 63 miles of becoming platinum, been a gold member for the past 5 years but was never able to make it to platinum. I was wondering if AA would make me platinum because Im so close or not. If not, I am looking to fly a short trip just for the miles.. I am looking at MIA-TPA for December 8th (only day that I can fly before the 31st) for $193. I saw a MIA-PHL flight on the 8th as well for $106 but never booked it!

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

three options:

1) Call in, ask really nice and hope to get lucky because you are pretty close

2) End of the year buy-up to make the missing status (e.g.: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/amer...aster-thd.html)

3) book a short mileage run (might be cheaper than the buy-up, though obviously takes some time depending on what you fly!)

Flight change

I booked a flight for a wrong date, can I change it free of charge if it's within 24 hours? Basically, I had been looking at an over night flight but the one I booked is the same day flight.

I don't even see any facility to change date/time in the manage booking tool.

Yes you can (if it's the same price). You can also just cancel it and book the flight you intended to...

Thank you for the prompt response. So, should I call the CS? I don't see any "cancel" tool in the online management.
