yes
The 77W flight is at the high end - the $1800 roundtrip flight I quote. That's refundable roundtrip. Non 77W averages $1000-$1800 too. Still, for a transcon, that's cheap for a refundble F fare. Try getting a refundable F fare (not to mention J fare) from NYC to LAX/SFO and let me know what that costs.
For the 77W flight? This flight is often much more expensive than the basic F flights.[/QUOTE]

That's a good point. The low premium fares would indicate that AA has a weaker reason to keep the 77W on LAX-MIA compared to higher-yielding routes. If fares come down more, it would also replace award space.

For this route, C space usually opens at some point, though it closes quickly IME. Set an EF alert and then call and do miles+copay. Small price to pay to be assured a J seat.

Just took this flight today (Aug 27). Looks like 6 people cleared the upgrade list. I was #13 on the list so it was MCE for me. Flight in coach is standard. With the 9:45am departure it's either a breakfast sandwich or fruit and cheese for purchase + 2 drink runs. FA comped my Bloody Mary for some reason (still PlatPro and haven't quite hit EXP).
Flight was 45 minutes late pulling off the gate. There was traffic in the alley behind us. Then, weather in Miami meant we sat on the taxiway until the rampers could get out. History over the past few days shows this flight being delayed (sometimes considerably).
So, if you are going to be in coach, not sure if I would go out of my way for this flight. If you have a tight connection in Miami, I would think twice about it.

LAX-MIA 77W flight today was swapped to a 777-200. Here's hoping for the Super Diamond seats! I received a call yesterday from the EXP line asking if I'd switch to the 7:30AM flight in F (a 32B). Offered $500. Would have bit, but I was connecting from UA so it didn't work. They also offered the $500 voucher plus fare difference to fly the original itinerary in coach. NOPE!

Did you receive notification of the change in aircraft? Email? Phone call?

Nope. I randomly checked it and that's how I realized. Ended up calling and they confirmed the downgrade. Guessing it's part of a bigger scheme to utilize the 77Ws in South America.

This wasn't an easy upgrade before- I glued it monthly and booked six plus months out. That gave me about 85% under the old rules, which was pretty good but i often was the only one or one of two.
now, with 1/3 less premium seats, it will be even tougher.
im still showing 77w for my flights in late September and min October. But the 772 looks like it's here for a while in the New Year. Hopefully will continue to be lucky but with these coach fares sub $300 now, I'll barely make the EQD target, so don't expect complimentary upgrades.

I took AA1088 on Aug 26th on my way to BOG, after taxiing the pilot announced he's getting a faulty brake signal so we waited for a gate to open then went back to T4 where it took almost two hours to find and replace the faulty piece and run items on the checklist.
Luckily I had a 4 hour layover in MIA, plenty of folks missed their connection that day. However the plane and crew in J were fantastic on that day, catering was so-so.
Sad to see the 77W taken out from the route, though at least I got to try it on a domestic run (took it twice on LAX-LHR and MIA-GRU).
So LAX-MIA will be an all narrow body route from now on?
