I tried without success:

a) online (didn't work because of mandatory document verification, despite no visa required)
b) at Airport Express Central Station in-town check-in (no contractors or AA agents working the AA desk at that hour)
c) at a kiosk in the airport terminal (gave an error: Please see an agent to complete check-in)

Here is what AA.com says about HKG check-in times:

TICKET COUNTER HOURS
9:30 a.m. – 12:30 noon

In-town check-in:

If you are taking the Airport Express, you can enjoy the convenient free in-town check-in (Airport Express Station) service in Hong Kong and Kowloon Stations to check in between 90-minutes and one full day ahead of your scheduled flight departure time.

(but again, I tried to go to the Airport Express station at approximately 9pm the night before my flight, and nobody was working the AA counters)
Thank you for the datapoint. Was ultimately hoping to just go up to the Wing to eat and shower then pull an all nighter out in the town without a need for hotel.

No such luck. No return BP at DFW because the HKG-DFW departure will be >24 hours prior. You arrive DFW-HKG at ~6pm, so the return flight is still the next calendar day. Also, the CX and other OW lounges close overnight, leaving only the Plaza Premium lounge that's open 24 hours, both landside and airside.

The only think I can think of is to buy a fully-refundable ticket for a late CX departure the same calendar day that you're arriving.

Yea thought about booking an award ticket and canceling but would be last option. Probably better to just pay for Plaza Premium.

Wirelessly posted (Apple iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 7_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/537.51.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Mobile/11D201 Safari/9537.53)

But wouldn't buying a fully-refundable CX ticket to access the lounges require you to be stamped out of Hong Kong at Immigration? All flights departing HKG are international flights, so once you are inside the secured area, you are legally in a no-mans-land, and you cannot just walk back out the door. You would need to be escorted by an agent downstairs to the arrivals level and then be cleared for entry through immigration again. Not sure it's worth it for a shower and a meal! Just Priceline a hotel for the night--that's what I did on my last HKG turn.

Looks like today's Hkg-Dfw. Flt 138 was cancelled. That has to mess up the swu waiting game for a couple of days as they try to get people home.

Holy smokes, according to EF the cancellation was due to aircraft damage

It's not just the brakes, but the chocks as well - both would have to fail (or not be set properly) for the airplane to spontaneously roll back with a door open. Someone's in big trouble.

I was on this flight about 10 days ago and there was plenty of food at the walk-up bar but it started to get a bit empty toward the end of the flight. They fed us three decent sized meals in business, though, so I definitely didn't go hungry.

Didn't something similar happen a year or two ago at HKG to CX where a plane rolled and the jetbridge yanked one or more boarding doors off the plane? Seems to be a recurring problem at HKG.

I think the incident actually happened at DFW, it just caused a cancellation at HKG as a result as well.

I believe that AA has only a few directly-employed personnel stationed at HKG and most of the agent and ramp work is done by contractors. Bad news if somebody forgot to set the wheel chocks.

You're right. 137 appears to have cancelled on 8/10/14 and thus didn't arrive on 8/11.

No - in that case, the jet bridge collapsed while being backed off the aircraft. It was a two-jetbridge gate, and the other jetbridge was still adjacent to the aircraft with the door open. The collapse took down both jetbridges, including the one with the open aircraft door, thus taking out the door with it as it went down. But this had nothing to do with movement of the aircraft.

Seems to be a recurring problem at HKG.
... except that it wasn't the same problem, nor same airport (someone else already pointed out that this week's accident was at DFW on a HKG-bound aircraft, not at HKG).

Old age does that - I wasn't remembering correctly. But it did happen earlier at DFW. Four years ago, someone forgot to chock the wheels, and an AA 772 rolled back and ripped off the door:
