NOTE: The last C45 777-223ER was retrofitted to C37 and Premium Economy at KPAE and returned to service 11 December 2018. Please see the new “Which 777-200ER?” thread here.
- Two J seats, two configurations as of 1/1/2019: Two, 37J Zodiac in 20 772 and Super Diamond in 27.
The final two Boeing 777-200 left to be retrofit (aircraft registrations N759AN and N795AN) entered the shop at the end of November. With these out of service, all 777-200s operating going forward will have the following configuration:
37 Business (1-2-1 arrangement)
24 Premium Economy (2-4-2)
66 Main Cabin Extra (3-4-3)
146 Economy (3-4-3)

NOTE: On aa.com, seat charts make it difficult to identify which 777 has Zodiac or B/E Aerospace seats. See post #1 for the AA seat diagrams of the 777 Business cabins.
If the available (blue) seats have a notch in the front signifying aft (backward) facing seats, it’s a Zodiac “Concept D” Business Suite equipped aircraft.
If the available (blue) seats have NO notch in the front (are perfectly square), it’s a B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo equipped aircraft.

Longboater states the last 777 pre-CIP changes to CIP flight was 772 MIA-SCL July 5, 2017. The last old "NGBC" aircraft went to HAECO HKG 23 July 2017 for refitting.
The Points Guy (link) states AA will begin retrofitting 772s with three rows of 2-4-2 seating Premium Economy in June 2017 and finish in Q2 of 2018. AA will treat these as Main Cabin Extra for sales purposes until 15 Dec 2017.
There are 47 Boeing 777-223ER total in the AA fleet. They may be as follows:
13 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with 45 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 55 Main Cabin Extra and 160 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 2" seat chart.
6 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with with 37 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 58 Main Cabin Extra and 194 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 3" with 37 J seats.
The remainder of the 28 777-200ER fleet (currently AA coded as "772") is comprised of aircraft with 37 B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo all forward facing (at an angle to the fuselage center line) Business class, 58 MCE and 194 Economy seats. (No seat chart on SeatGuru yet, but the "Version 3" will probably suffice for MCE and Economy.)"
NOTE:,Premium Economy seating to be added (completion June 2018) resulting in loss of some Economy seats.

Zodiac Concept D Business Suite seat production problem slowed the CIP / refit to a crawl. (The Zodiac contract was terminated and a suit filed against Zodiac 24 Sep 2015.)
The airframes required infrastructure changes to support the new seats etc. and the reconfiguration was accomplished at the airframe's scheduled maintenance "C" check (performed by HAECO at HKG):
Widebody "C" Checks
Because of the complexity of widebody aircraft, all "C" checks are "Heavy C" checks. The complete airframe inspection and service is done every 24 - 30 months. It takes approximately 10,000 man-hours and from two to four weeks to accomplish a widebody "C" check.

AA seat map does not show notches or rear facing seats in hover-over description. Expertflyer shows rear facing in seat description. Do we still not know for sure until 48 hours out? DH and I took 2L/3L for now.

You won't know for sure until you step on board--planes assignments typically show up on FlightRadar24 at about T-48, but they can change at any time, especially on a flight originating from DFW. That said, you have good odds of flying on an airplane without rear-facing seats. Right now your chance of getting one is 28/34, but that will go down as the 45J seat planes with rear-facing seats start to get retrofitted into the 37J configuration (while keeping the rear-facing seats).

No, you aren’t correct in your interpretation, unfortunately. AA has no intention of replacing the Zodiac seats with Super Diamond. They are reducing the 772svwith 45 J to 37 J, however.

So when AA announced the 788/9 order, they stated some 789s would replace "older 772s"....when retiring, will they take BE seats should a to-be-retired aircraft have them and sub them into one that isn't be retired but has Zodiac seats?

The new 788's and 789's will come with the Super Diamond seat installed, I'm sure.
Then again, the new 789's will not start delivery until 2023... I'm sure there will be a newer, competitive J seat by then.

Can’t find the link right now, but the 777 and 787 variants of the B/E seats are slightly different. One has a shoulder harness and one has the seatbelt airbag. The seats are not swappable between aircraft types. Could that be retrofitted? Not sure. But it’s not as simple as removing the bolts and swapping it to a new aircraft.

Currently onboard AA123 04 May DFW/HNL (N782AN) and must admit I had no idea AA had reverse seating until we got onboard as our DFW/HNL 772 was all forward facing N793AN.
Probably the least of our worries currently. While lining up to board our flight the infant in front of us in the line let out a piercing scream & SO joked "I hope they aren't sitting anywhere near us" to which I replied "nah they've probably just purchased group 1 boarding." We have seats 2L and 3L, give you one guess who's in 1L.

I have mileage ticket on hold in business ORD-DFW-FCO 777-2. The plane has a premium economy section. Am I correct to assume this plane cannot get "swapped out" for a 777 with Zodiac seats because AA is selling premium economy seats on my flight.. Also have on hold ORD-CLT-FCO on A330 in business. I do not want to fly direct to FCO on the 787-800. I do not like the seats. Looking for the more comfortable business class seat.

7 of the 35 772’s with 37J and PE are Zodiac’s. Thus, your chances your DFW-FCO being a Zodiac plane are statistically 20%. You won’t know for sure until around 24 hours out, and then it’s subject to change anytime with an equipment swap before departure.

AA 236 (JFK > FCO) is showing as as tail number N788AN on May 16th, which is Zodiac seating according to this.
On the AA website seatmap it is showing as all forward facing seats (so, Super Diamond)
Looking at the history, 236 is usually served by Super Diamond seats.
