NOTE: The last C45 777-223ER was retrofitted to C37 and Premium Economy at KPAE and returned to service 11 December 2018. Please see the new “Which 777-200ER?” thread here.
- Two J seats, two configurations as of 1/1/2019: Two, 37J Zodiac in 20 772 and Super Diamond in 27.
The final two Boeing 777-200 left to be retrofit (aircraft registrations N759AN and N795AN) entered the shop at the end of November. With these out of service, all 777-200s operating going forward will have the following configuration:
37 Business (1-2-1 arrangement)
24 Premium Economy (2-4-2)
66 Main Cabin Extra (3-4-3)
146 Economy (3-4-3)
link to American Airlines Retrofits Its 100th Widebody Aircraft With Premium Economy, TPG, 5 Dec 2018
- Premium Economy installation began June 2017, over December 2018 for the 45J - now converted to 37J.
- Route Deployment, "How can I tell?" and General Discussion
NOTE: On aa.com, seat charts make it difficult to identify which 777 has Zodiac or B/E Aerospace seats. See post #1 for the AA seat diagrams of the 777 Business cabins.
If the available (blue) seats have a notch in the front signifying aft (backward) facing seats, it’s a Zodiac “Concept D” Business Suite equipped aircraft.
If the available (blue) seats have NO notch in the front (are perfectly square), it’s a B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo equipped aircraft.

Longboater states the last 777 pre-CIP changes to CIP flight was 772 MIA-SCL July 5, 2017. The last old "NGBC" aircraft went to HAECO HKG 23 July 2017 for refitting.
The Points Guy (link) states AA will begin retrofitting 772s with three rows of 2-4-2 seating Premium Economy in June 2017 and finish in Q2 of 2018. AA will treat these as Main Cabin Extra for sales purposes until 15 Dec 2017.
There are 47 Boeing 777-223ER total in the AA fleet. They may be as follows:
13 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with 45 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 55 Main Cabin Extra and 160 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 2" seat chart.
6 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with with 37 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 58 Main Cabin Extra and 194 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 3" with 37 J seats.
The remainder of the 28 777-200ER fleet (currently AA coded as "772") is comprised of aircraft with 37 B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo all forward facing (at an angle to the fuselage center line) Business class, 58 MCE and 194 Economy seats. (No seat chart on SeatGuru yet, but the "Version 3" will probably suffice for MCE and Economy.)"
NOTE:,Premium Economy seating to be added (completion June 2018) resulting in loss of some Economy seats.

Zodiac Concept D Business Suite seat production problem slowed the CIP / refit to a crawl. (The Zodiac contract was terminated and a suit filed against Zodiac 24 Sep 2015.)
The airframes required infrastructure changes to support the new seats etc. and the reconfiguration was accomplished at the airframe's scheduled maintenance "C" check (performed by HAECO at HKG):
Widebody "C" Checks
Because of the complexity of widebody aircraft, all "C" checks are "Heavy C" checks. The complete airframe inspection and service is done every 24 - 30 months. It takes approximately 10,000 man-hours and from two to four weeks to accomplish a widebody "C" check.

Any way to ensure I get those planes on the JFK-LHR route? I'm looking at February flights so maximum about 5 weeks to the date of travel. Is what is shown in the seatmap now likely to remain the case? If not, do I have any recourse with AA against being moved to a 10-across 777? Really not happy with the idea of flying in a 10-across seat.
Best bet is to try to snag a PE seat as MCE and hope for the best.

Well, JFK-LHR is only scheduled on the Hi-J 772 and 77W, as far as I know. So it's very likely to be 9 across, seeing as only 1 77W and no Hi-J 772s have been refurbished.
But there's no guarantee. In 5 weeks there'll presumably be at least 2 more refurbished. (Thought they seem to be taking their sweet time on the Hi-J 772.) And there could always be an equipment change to a Lo-J 772 in case of IRROPS.

If you're booked in early February, the odds are pretty high that you'll be in the 3-3-3 MCE on a high-J 772 or 77W.
Booked later in the month and it gets chancier. Still no 45J 772s (13 of them) at KPAE, but I would imagine they will start heading that way soon.

I thought the 772 was supposed to be end of Q2, with on sale starting with flights departing on/after 10 July? I can’t recall where Inread that though, so I could be wrong or confusing it with another retrofit.

The 13 45J Zodiac 772's fly mostly only out of JFK/RDU/LAX right now.
Those routes are not offering PE for sale currently (if they are a 772 route. Some of those routes are 77W and PE is on sale starting June 26 flights)
AA did say the 772's were going to be done by end of Q1. But that seems questionable now that no 45J 772 has gone to KPAE at all yet. And it takes about 6-7 days to refit these planes.

I thought I read on the 777 update thread that all 772's now had PE (or would before my flight). But the AA seatmap for my flight (JFK-MAD) in June shows just what's on seatguru v2.
Should I worry?

Supposedly, all 772s are to have PE by end Q1, but frankly, I doubt they'll have done all 13 before the end of March. Frankly, it feels like AA doesn't know what they want to do with those planes yet. (Remove J seats/keep J as is)

That is not true. The 37J 772s are complete, the 45J ones are not yet done.

I’ve sent them notifications in the past, but that information has usually been ignored.
Our aircraft threads are much more up to date. They can be located through the Wikipost in HELP DESK: General questions re aircraft equipment, fleet, seats, IFE, etc..
The 47 772s are all two class (but they’re adding PEY surely over the first half of 2018 iirc), in the Zodiac Concept D or B/E Super Diamond. The Zodiacs are further divided into the standard and larger J cabin.
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/amer...under-way.html has links to the specific 772 threads. Some have seat chart illustrations in the First post, iirc.

If AA will remove 2 rows of J (standardizing the 772 fleet at 37 J seats), then I would imagine the time to refit them will be longer than 5-7 days.
But, it's basically certain that they will have them all refitted by June, IMO.
PE has been doing very well for AA so far, and I am sure they are eager to get all the widebody routes refitted before summer travel season starts.

So "that is not true" was code for "yes, that's right".
I guess AA's in a bit of a no-win situation. I'm sure they know what the future seat layout will be, but the planned aircraft may not configured as of today. Either way they allow pax to select seats may result in a need to change.
PE's currently not for sale, so I guess they're not selling/seating until they're sure of the conversion. And I guess I'm probably safe that I won't lose MCE seats - and maybe they'll have to put us in new PE seats.
Any strategy other than keeping an eye on seat assignments over the next few months?
(I'm guessing the "AA will treat these as Main Cabin Extra for sales purposes until 15 Dec 2017." date needs to be updated in the Wiki?)

They took 2 to 3 weeks for the first aircraft in the past, then 2 weeks was regular time until they were able to do it in just little over a week, I will assume the same will happen with 77W.
Keep in mind most 772 45J are out of JFK/LAX/RDU to LHR/BCN and I haven't seen any upcoming launch for those routes, I think they will do the conversion at a later time (probably after 77W/789)

This was really helpful. Thank you for the details about the fleet used for JFK-LHR and for the likely dates of "densification".

Seems I will be on N781AN NRT-DFW. It'll be interesting to see the cabin in person.
