The first AA 787-8, N800AN, has been built; flight testing began 6 January 2015 with the article currently referred to as "BOE-817".

The initial 787-8 configuration is expected to be 28 J, 48 MCE and 150 MC.

Post 184 (sluggoaafa):

28 B/C, 48 MCE, 150 MC

...last word we had was the 787 is due on 'property' approximately 12/31. January will be tied to FAA. February getting a few more tweaks done. March will be first AA revenue flight.
(Post #186, JonNYC, has details for the 787-9.)

The All Things 787 Blog states American has 16 787-8s and 26 787-9s on order.

Post #157 states first passenger flights early 2015.

JonNYC depicts what the J cabin layout is likely here in post #260.

roadwarrior84 in post #260 shares some interior photos he found online, here.

To keep things in some semblance of organisation, I've consolidated all of the 2012 threads on the 787 delivery dates, orders or delays into this thread. For reference, here are the threads I found from years past, along with their dates:

. . . ● 14 Jan 2013: American changing jet orders with Boeing, Airbus
. . . ● 12 November 2011: AA 787 delivery schedule?
. . . ● 21 December 2010: AA 787 delivery dates at risk - again!
. . . ● 2 September 2010: American's 787's may fly JFK-LHR
. . . ● 21 February 2010: Boeing 787 Dreamliner: when realistic to fly on AA?
. . . ● 17 April 2009: 787 deliveries pushed back to 2013
. . . ● 15 October 2008: AA Orders 42 787 "Dreamliners" (+ 58 on options)

Number of J Seats Speculation (AA 787-8 & 9)

I wonder how many J seats AA will install on the 787-8s and 9s? Given the trend of the every seat having direct aisle access, they would be configured 1-2-1, and although slightly less wide than the 77X, I think they should be able to use very similar seats with the 43 inch pitch as they have on the 77W,

My personal guess is 40 J seats for the 787-8 and 48 for the 787-9.

Any thoughts, or even better, insights?

You're expecting 30% more J capacity on the 788 compared to the 763 and 6% more on the 789 than on the 77E?

Well, I looked at JAL, ANA and BA which have 42, 42 and 35 respectively on their 788s, so I'm just speculating. Presumably these planes will be put on premium LH business routes.

In general BA has a much heavier premium mix than AA does I believe. I don't know about ANA or JAL specifically, but I'd suspect the same.

Are there any premium long haul routes currently flown with the 763?

AA 787 delivery….

I have searched and I can't find it, so sorry if already posted.

Does anyone know when AA will begin to take delivery of the 787? I know the initial date was in late 2014, is that still the case? Also, any speculation on what routes the 787 will fly? With the introduction of the new 777-300 I didn't know how that would impact what routes the 787 would be flying. Thanks!

My guess - 32 J on the 787-8. 4 rows in front and 4 rows in back for 32.

UA has 36 (6 rows of 6 - 3 rows forward and 3 rows in rear section)

I suspect AA will be 1-2-1

You need to search the Pre-Merger AA Forum for this information; we've merged your query into the proper thread.

AA ordered 42 787-9s so I guess they changed some to -8s.

American Airlines disclosed [...] that it has a revised agreement with Boeing that confirms American’s order of 42 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and moves up the first delivery to November 2014.

The disclosure in a Securities and Exchange filing says that Boeing and American have agreed to “an accelerated delivery schedule for the 787 aircraft with deliveries scheduled to commence in November 2014 and to continue in each calendar year through September 2018, and the confirmation of the purchase of the Boeing 787 aircraft, which previously had been subject to certain reconfirmation rights.”

Yep. When AA was in bankruptcy, AA renegotiated the contract to permit AA to take up to 20 787-8s as a part of the 42 firm orders.

I have long predicted that the 787-8s will end up being the 762s of the 787 family, but I've been wrong before. By that I mean "too small." Direct aisle access completely flat business class seats require a lot of floor space, and the -9s and -10s will offer that floor space at a rather small fuel penalty compared to the small -8s.

AA 787 Orders / Delays / Changes / Delivery Dates, 2012 and later (consolidated)

Dougie mentioned in this month's column both the A350 and 787s are on the way. Didn't mention a timeframe though.
