The first AA 787-8, N800AN, has been built; flight testing began 6 January 2015 with the article currently referred to as "BOE-817".

The initial 787-8 configuration is expected to be 28 J, 48 MCE and 150 MC.

Post 184 (sluggoaafa):

28 B/C, 48 MCE, 150 MC

...last word we had was the 787 is due on 'property' approximately 12/31. January will be tied to FAA. February getting a few more tweaks done. March will be first AA revenue flight.
(Post #186, JonNYC, has details for the 787-9.)

The All Things 787 Blog states American has 16 787-8s and 26 787-9s on order.

Post #157 states first passenger flights early 2015.

JonNYC depicts what the J cabin layout is likely here in post #260.

roadwarrior84 in post #260 shares some interior photos he found online, here.

To keep things in some semblance of organisation, I've consolidated all of the 2012 threads on the 787 delivery dates, orders or delays into this thread. For reference, here are the threads I found from years past, along with their dates:

. . . ● 14 Jan 2013: American changing jet orders with Boeing, Airbus

45 MCE? Wow, that seems like a lot compared to the 767's, more than the 773 and equaling the number on the 77D.

As a side topic, I wonder what's going on with the expansion of MCE in some of these new configurations?

I have. It's not pleasant, I can assure you. But I'm fairly certain MCE will be fine. It was the pitch on BA that bothered me more than the width. JL's width (8 across) and pitch was great, though.

I thought MCE was also going to be 9 abreast. Not good. Many folks will simply not fit in such a narrow seat.

Yeah, AA Y is getting worse while J (and F too, but to a lesser degree) is improving. Priorities...I suppose mgmt feels that if they can fully monetize the front cabins then they can afford to cheap out the back and deal with whatever that results in.

But the 788 sure looks pretty in AA livery

It's horrendous at the non-MCE economy window seats if you are 5-10 or taller. Personal nightmare experience from BA 787.

It's the same 17 inch width we've long had on AA's 757s and 767s; not desirable but nothing new.

IMO, the bigger issue is moving from desirable 2-5-2 to 3-3-3, where every seat is adjacent to a middle-seat occupant (assuming it's full, which these days is a safe bet). For many years, AA was a 2-5-2 airline on the DC-10s, MD-11s and 772s rather than the lousy 3-3-3 configuration. The sole exception was on the 747s, where most economy seats were 3-4-3.

Correct, MCE is also 9 abreast, but the extra pitch really helps. Again, this is just for me, since I was more bothered by the pitch than the width of the seat (though it is noticeably more narrow than your average 777/747 adn especially the JAL 787.)

As with all things, YMMV.

I don't care how big the plane is and how comfortable I will route around that aircraft type until the issues with the battery are completely fixed.

While I own BOE stock I do not want to fly a 787. Call me crazy.
