The first AA 787-8, N800AN, has been built; flight testing began 6 January 2015 with the article currently referred to as "BOE-817".

The initial 787-8 configuration is expected to be 28 J, 48 MCE and 150 MC.

Post 184 (sluggoaafa):

28 B/C, 48 MCE, 150 MC

...last word we had was the 787 is due on 'property' approximately 12/31. January will be tied to FAA. February getting a few more tweaks done. March will be first AA revenue flight.
(Post #186, JonNYC, has details for the 787-9.)

The All Things 787 Blog states American has 16 787-8s and 26 787-9s on order.

Post #157 states first passenger flights early 2015.

JonNYC depicts what the J cabin layout is likely here in post #260.

roadwarrior84 in post #260 shares some interior photos he found online, here.

To keep things in some semblance of organisation, I've consolidated all of the 2012 threads on the 787 delivery dates, orders or delays into this thread. For reference, here are the threads I found from years past, along with their dates:

Actually, some of the "perfectly fine" 767s will be retired.

I thought I read here that the intent of the 787s is to replace some of those 767s, not to test profitability of new long and thin routes.

That still seems to be a moving goalpost. Have they even actually made clear how many of the 763s will be getting the new interiors?

Best number I heard, IIRC, was "max of 25." They'll do only the ones that absolutely have to to comply with JBV requirement of all lie-flat on JBV routes.

AA 787s will get the same seats going into the 772 retrofit.

The website All Things 787 is reporting that parts are now arriving for N800AN, AA's first 787 and that construction will begin during the third week of August. This construction schedule should allow N800AN to begin test flying in September.

Seating configuration

I just read that AA's Dreamliner will be outfitted with only 226 seats. I might be wrong but I thought that the 787 was significantly larger than the 767 and that already has 218 seats (going down to 209 after lie flat retrofit). It just seems like they will have a lot of premium seats or maybe coach will be roomier?

The major unique selling point of the 787 is its ability to economically do long, (relatively) thin routes like JL's NRT-BOS or thin routes with operational challenges (short runway, altitude, etc) like JL's NRT-SAN or UA's NRT-DEN. It's roughly 767-sized (slightly bigger) with 777-like range (depending on variant of each, of course).

The 787-8 is just six feet longer overall compared to a 763. The 787-8 is wider, permitting airlines to outfit it with 8-across economy seats (wide, more comfortable seats) or 9-across (narrow, 17.2 inch econ seats). The 763 cabin could fit just 7-across (no chance for 8-across).

With 226 total seats in the 787-8, AA's cabins will be significantly more cramped than JAL's 186-seat 787-8s. JAL outfits its 787s with 42J (slanted like AA's NGBC) plus 144 economy seats at 8-across.

From the initial numbers, there will be nothing "roomier" about AA's 787-8s.

Even United crams just 219 total seats on its 787-8s.

FYI JL will purportedly be putting in their new J on future 788 deliveries. That Y cabin is def one of the best Y in the sky right now.

That and it's ability to show profit will lower load factors because of operational efficiency. So put on routes that can sometimes go light, especially international routes whose bid required full service, so if some days your lighter, you are not burning cash. Though I may be wrong on this and misread something....

Also, we have to remeber that there will be fairly large size discrepancies between the different 787 models.

Cheers,

787-8 Progress

Boeing has made significant progress in moving the 787 production along. N800AN, the first AA 787-8 is undergoing pre flight preparation, as it came off the assembly line two weeks ago. N801AC, the second AA ship is undergoing final assembly that started on 9/26, and parts are arriving for N802AN with a date of 10/16 for beginning assembly. N803AC will be 6th in line at Everett for parts to begin arriving. I have been checking Puget Sound Boeing Test Flights to see if N800AN has had her first flight, but it appears that she has not. Boeing now is delivering 787s at a rate of 10-11 per month, so it will be soon that we will begin to see a couple of these birds in the fleet.

I had read that AA was looking to take over the assignment of Delta's SEA to HND run. These birds might fit in well on this route if AA gets better landing and takeoff times than they had with their JFK-HND flights.

Just to be clear, AA wants the DL frequency. They want to use it on LAX-HND. Also, the times are fairly decent for West coast flights, it's for flights from the east coast where the timing of the US airlines' frequencies are truly impossible.

According to all things 787, N800AN has a 12/15 delivery date and N801AC has 12/23.
