Use this vs. "free" luggage with us of AA Visa card?

This seems appealing, but we usually book Main cabin with Alaska Airlines and, using the Alaska Airlines-branded Visa card, we get one piece of luggage free per passenger. I'm guessing we would *not* have the free luggage using this--unless it's possible to use a *portion* of the gift card *and* a portion with the Visa card and still get the free luggage...Do I understand this correctly?

You don’t have to pay with the card to get the bags… I’m shocked at how many people apparently don’t realize this. Perhaps they want people thinking they have to so it drives spend? Who knows…

I think it's because other carriers (see United Explorer card terms and conditions) require a traveler to purchase their airfare using the designated card to receive the free bag benefit.

Wow...you have been to HNL-FLA-ANC recently? Are you trying to do some end of the year mileage run?!

STL, despite having only 1 daily AS flight, had a huge display of them a week ago.

If you're in a pinch, the local warehouse should have them in stock. To be safe you can call your warehouse and tell them the item number you see on the web (its the same) and they should be able to tell you how many they have in stock.

Update, I purchased Friday and received first thing Monday morning.
IIRC, last time I purchased in warehouse there was a notice that it might take up to 24 hours to activate the cert?

I think it's 24 "business hours" which is what I've experienced before.

FYI, you can get the gift card from Costco within minutes of ordering by calling customer service and asking them to contact shipping rather than wait a day or two to get the email with the codes. I did it today. Given that time is of the essence with airfares climbing daily, getting the card today may save you from price increases.
