A comment I read on an internal news story by someone working on the project leads me to believe AS is cognizant of this generally being undesirable and will not upgrade someone from a window/aisle into a middle. I don't have any first hand knowledge of that though.

I hope they take into account individual preference. As a tall person, I prefer a middle with extra leg room over a cramped window or aisle. So long as they treat the exit rows as Premium (as they are no Preferred) then no upgrade would occur. But I would always prefer to be in a Premium middle over no-leg-room aisle or window.

So the benefit for all Elites actually lasted quite a while. Maybe you weren't a UA elite during the good years?

Good point...I agree...keeping the auto upgrading out of the picture would be best in my opinion. Regardless, I think the likelihood of elites being able to book these seats for free at booking is low to non-existent. I remember back in my UA days when I could, as an elite, reserve E+ seats at booking....that didn't last long
Pretty sure I have been able to select E+ at booking since at least 2003-ish when I first got Silver status. In 2011 it was announced that for the 2012 membership year they would require Gold for selecting E+ at booking (Silvers can now select E+ at checkin).
So the benefit for all Elites actually lasted quite a while. Maybe you weren't a UA elite during the good years?

As a newly re-minted Gold I hope so as well (plus one companion, please?). It would be a motivator to aim for Gold again next year. Otherwise...

It would be nice if you got a PE upgrade, it could just flag that record locator / passenger and notify. Then you can go in and pick a new seat based on what is available at any time.

To my knowledge from reading around here is that only the 800s right now and they are all to be complete by end of the year. I don't know if they were to complete before the end of the year if some 900s will get done by then...
