Before you start cursing me for my good fortune, this was balanced out by Amex denying me a referral bonus and again just recently getting no GCR rebate on a SPG Amex signup despite using GCR to sign up.

Were you instantly approved? Has anyone had to call to have them process the application while having another active account?
Also, do you call and request a lower credit limit? I'm wondering if part of my problem is that they gave me a card with quite a high limit.

Call back and see if you can get a better rep. Also, if you want to speak to a true credit analyst in the Card Services dept, call during their 'awake' hours: M-F/8am-9pm Eastern. Weekend staff are mostly just minions.

Each time I've gotten a card they've given me a credit limit of around $10,000, which I immediately lower to $3,000 or $5,000. You can get it lowered via Chat. I think the fact that you hold a card with a high credit limit may be what is keeping you from being approved for a new card.

Instantly approved for both a regular card and a business card, while already having a regular card account and a business card account open.

As a general rule, though, for tylerc and others, keeping credit limits as low as possible will likely help with approval of new cards.

Data point.
In January when I applied for my second Alaska card, the credit specialist told me that $10000 was the max credit limit they would give me across all of my cards, and so to get the Alaska card approved I had to close my oldest Platinum Plus account with MBNA. Recently I was looking to apply for my third Alaska card. Seeing muji's post above, I requested a credit limit decrease on my $6000-CL card, to $2000, decreasing my total CL with MBNA to $6000.
The next day (today) I applied for the third card. Got the pending message, called in, and was told I was declined as $10000 was the max they would give me (at this point he offered to close yet another card to open the new account). Apparently they didn't see the credit limit decrease, so I pointed it out to the agent. When the agent asked me why I had requested a decrease, I didn't want to be too upfront about wanting to be auto approved more easily, so I said something along the lines of "I thought it would be good for my credit profile" and received a (deserved) telling-off from the agent.
At this point the agent basically straight up asked me, "So what do you want to do?" I replied, "Can you approve this one now?" And he said, "Yes, I can approve it for $5000." So here I am with $11000 credit limit minutes after being told $10000 was the maximum. Go figure. To those getting declines, just call back and speak to another agent. Odds are that eventually you'll find one who is willing to shift credit around for you or, as a last resort, close old accounts to open new ones.

I am on my second card. The first time, the companion fare was available before I received my credit card in the mail. The second time, I am still waiting. The first transaction took place on April 2, and first statement was April 18.
