This is just the standard way it works when R class was unavailable at time of lodging it.

Flying 23/01 on NZ2 in Economy. I can see 26 J and 45 PE, along with 4 R class seats, available. Any ideas what I should offer for OneUp? Can't use RU as booked in F class. It's suggesting NZ$690 with a minimum of NZ$350.

Would be really good if this thread was organized by route somehow.
Might start a separate thread for RU's (silver, gold, elite) and elite APD upgrade successes/failures. Might chat with a moderator to organise a wiki to link to threads or best way to do this.
Just makes it easier to search and look at outcomes.

NZ don't make R class availability public and certainly don't have 4 on NZ2 (they have 2 and I'd be very surprised if they were still free this close to the date). There is also no way of knowing true availability in GDS or the NZ booking engine of any more than 9 seats.
