It hasn't been. There was a thread on another forum about it, but didn't seem like there was much of a local market to support it, and connections from Asia are no shorter via YVR than they were through YYZ.

YVR-KIX is moving back to mainline next summer - presumably because the YVR B767 base for rouge is being closed.

Curious.

Any speculation as to why it's a one time flight?

What's odd is that it appears to be a revenue flight in both directions. Charters are usually operate out and ferry back (Series 7000) and/or vice versa. Too early for a fall changing of the leaves flight. Hmmmm.

I look forward to getting the Dreamliner on YVR–HKG, but that's quite the capacity drop! Is this route normally that empty during the winter months?

That surprised me as well! I thought YVR-HKG was one of the big driving forces behind the HD 77W fleet - ie. the route required lots of Y capacity and not much J, hence the 450 pax 77W!

Meanwhile Cathay maintains multiple daily frequencies.

Where will the 77W be used? More Europe (ie. CPH, ZRH, MUC) or South America (GRU, EZE)??

There's even award availability in both classes in both directions.
Curious indeed!

Any chance they do such a thing for a one-off cargo run and sell the seats?

YVR-YZF is going year-round and 2x daily during winter. No doubt this will offer much improved connections for Asian travelers during the aurora viewing season.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north...777860?cmp=rss
Travellers will find it much easier to travel between Yellowknife and Vancouver this winter — Air Canada announced it is planning to offer two daily non-stop flights during the popular northern aurora viewing season.

One flight, which was previously offered from December 2017 to April 2018 will be returning beginning in late October this year and will double during the winter season. The second flight will now be offered year-round, according to a joint news release from the territorial government and Air Canada issued Wednesday.
