Cabin Layout
Interior Specs can be found here https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/fly/onboard/fleet.html
- Window seats may feel narrower to come as the armrests are placed "into" the "curvature" of the cabin.
- Seats with no windows feel even more narrower as there is no space created by the curvature of window.
- All bulkhead seats have very limited legroom.
- Seats 15A, 16A, 16F, 17A and 17F have limited windows.
- Exit rows 19 and 20 have more legroom than regular preferred seats.
Routes
The 737 MAX is designated to replace the A320-series. Based on announcements and schedule updates, the following specific routes will be operated by the 737 MAX in future:
YYZ-LAX (periodic flights)
YYZ-SNN (new route)
YUL-DUB (new route)
YYZ/YUL-KEF (replacing Rouge A319)
YYT-LHR (replacing Mainline A319)
YHZ-LHR (replacing Mainline B767)
Hawaii Routes YVR/YYC (replacing Rouge B767)
Many domestic trunk routes (YYZ, YVR, YUL, YYC) now operated by 7M8, replacing A320 family

In fairness, it is not Boeing’s fault that this is the experience flying the MAX with AC. AC chose to have cramped seating and lavs in favour of cramming more self loading cargo in. This raises an important question: at what point will passengers have enough of such optimizations? People were not upset when AC removed catering and checked bags from Domestic Y, nor when they introduced Economy Basic and started nickel and dining for everything. Perhaps the MAX will be that breaking point: an airframe with a checkered safety record and a passenger experience amongst the worst of the AC fleet.

Air Canada (169 seats total):
Southwest Airlines (175 seats but significantly more pitch in Y):
American Hairlines (172 seats with some seats featuring only 30 inches of pitch!)
WestJet Airlines (174 seats, again more pitch than AC):
I cannot comment specifically on the lavatory issue but again would be surprised if it's one size fits all across airlines (although many airlines may have opted for the stock configuration).
Safe Travels,

6 across seating on the MAX (and the old 737's, 320's, and basically any single) is driven by economics and regulations. I'm sure airlines would love to squeeze more seats across a row however IIRC regulations demand that each seat be no more than 2 seats away from an aisle. So 4-4 seating configurations are not allowed as is 6 across seating in the middle section of a wide body two aisle aircraft.

Air Canada plans to hire 350 pilots ahead of eventual Boeing 737 Max return
Published on CBC today (Oct 29, 2019):
https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/air...ings-1.5339141
From the article:
The 12 undelivered Max aircraft now sit on Boeing lots, delaying Air Canada's hiring of pilots — the company currently has about 400 Max pilots, relegated to training for the time being. Fourteen more Max 8s were slated for delivery in the first half of 2020, but may now be pushed back.

According to what I could dig up, this thing was last in the air on April 18.
Or are they just rearranging the deck chairs, so to speak.

Yes, indeed. Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. To be honest, I don't really like the look of the 737 either, however in my opinion AC's livery makes it look good.

In the CBC - WestJet video on the Max grounding they said that once a week they have to power up the engines are take the bird a trip around the airport taxi way to keep it in compliance with the maintenance procedure. Assume the WS and AC jets have similar maintenance requirements.
