This is a first.

Back last summer I booked 2xJ LAX-TPE-BKK||SIN-TPE-YYZ for the family.
Four months later they finally realized that I did it (despite me talking about it incessantly for that entire time, to the point of literally buying maps of Southeast Asia and hanging them in the kitchen).
Of course, they all wanted to add a YYZ-WAW-YVR on to that. Great timing.

Anyway, I widened the search a bit and realized there were 2xJ SIN-BKK-LHR for a few days after we were planning to depart.
Few discussions later and I phoned up A3 to change my ticket. No go. Can't change origin/destination.
But.
What we CAN do is refund the ticket and fees (minus a €20/ticket charge) and then rebook on the new flight once the miles are credited. Which could take a day.
Panic.
Can we hold the seats so I don't lose them? Yes! For a €20/ticket fee. Sold.

So 23 hours later the same agent calls me back, processes some arbitrary CC charge (I want to say €280?) and we are booked. TIcketed. Emails received (not to me, only to MrsBarn, but I got her to forward).

As an added bonus, I now have enough miles to book the second kid on the SIN-BKK SQ segment which has availability, and the BKK-SIN BR segment is like $2k. Which is a lot better than the $3200 SIN-TPE-YYZ BR I was trying to avoid.

Honestly, this change process has been incredibly smooth. Hats off to A3!

Wait what? They allow you to reserve awards (and even on partners!) for 20€??? Did they say for how long they'd hold those seats ("hold my booking" for Aegean's own paid tickets is good for 6 days I think, but that has nothing to do with this)? This must be new, or at least no agent would do it for me 2,5 years ago, when I had also needed a similar change (and that one was not even on partners but on Aegean's own flights).

Haven't there been stories here of the miles taking WEEKS to arrive back in the account? That would certainly make a mess of the OPs plans. I'm glad it worked out this time though. I just booked three awards for January and I'm not risking changing any of them. Not that there's much available to change to anyway...

Refunding and A3 award on A3 metal recently took about a week. Definitely not within a day.

Can we hold the seats so I don't lose them? Yes! For a €20/ticket fee. Sold.
How does this work practically? They cancelled the original flight, and then created a new booking (without e-ticket) allowing to hold the flights without payment (i.e. wait to re-issue the eticket)?

If this is the approach that they took then that is not without risk. Cancelling 2x awards does not guarantee that 2x award seats become available for a new booking. On Aegean flights, maybe, however on partner flights those award seats may be removed from the inventory immediately after the flights are cancelled. Especially if there is demand for that flight there is no guarantee that they would be released back as award seats available for purchase.

I've had miles post back to my account within less than 24hrs in 2019 (for a vol. cancelled Aegean flight). But that's not the exact case here, I think. I believe that perhaps the agent handled this in such a way, that the miles didn't even need to get posted on the account again but rather only needed to be "released" by processing the canellation of that original booking.

This would also be my guess.

No risk there from what I gathered. If you read that post again, you 'll see that a completely new itinerary out of SIN was booked, for which award tickets already existed and were reserved by the agent! Which is precisely the "perk" here, which I'd certainly be interested in confirming it as a "real-world possible" service provided, instead of a one-off gesture of good will of an agent who went out of his/her way to serve a customer .
The one thing that still baffles me about that post is why on earth they'd take BR to reposition from BKK to SIN for $2k, when you can fly direct for something like $400!

Especially when BR does not offer BKK-SIN flights on their site!

does aegean show non-saver awards for partners?

i keep saying mileage required amount that is 2x one-way price, when i m only searching for one-way route. is it a glitch?

the problem i m refering to is similar to the above

Partner airline never see non saver award seats. Those seats are usually under a different booking class that isn't the X, R, I, O that A* uses for awards.
Most likely a glitch. A3 has them often.
I know that in one world there are some issues with award as AA uses one of the award buckets also for revenue tickets.

or this is just the wrong way to travel from Asia to Europe.

I am sure that there are standard ones which does not pass North America.

Remember Aegean does not give free stopovers. This is pricing out as two awards — Far East to NA (75k) and NA to Europe (55k).

I got RT pricing too when I checked NA to SE asia . that is a legit and standard routing, isn't it?

do you have a layover with a change of flight number? If so, it’s not “RT” pricing, it’s “two awards” pricing.

Sometimes you might just get unlucky. Take a look at these results for TPE-VIE in August:

Then refer to this point in the redemption rules:

In case of same cabin class and one intermediate point that does not exceed the 24 hours, the required miles for redemption are calculated as one segment, provided that there is seat availability directly from the origin airport to the destination airport, regardless of the seat availability between the origin airport to the intermediate point and from the intermediate point to the destination airport.

Emphasis mine. This is why BR75+OS378 is cheaper in C vs. Y: the latter does not have end to end seat availability using whatever insane rules they are using to calculate it. This is also why BR67+OS452 prices out as two awards (45+15) while BR67+OS458 prices out as one award.

this is one example that i can remember playing around with. it's not exactly RT pricing for both economy and business. but it's not the supposed OW pricing.

is it because Aegean doesnt allow mixed metal? when i check other gateways, i do see the appropriate one-way pricing (with one metal, i think - but i dont think i was looking very carefully so this hypothesis might just be debunked)

what do you mean by 'change in flight number'? an itinerary that has a layover is bound to have a change in flight number, if you connect to another plane, isnt it? (most of the time anyway, unless it's tagged flight)
