Well, what you emphasized in that post, regarding married segments and the "hidden" (from us customers) availability from A to C, regardless of whether or not there is award availability for A-B and B-C, is of course correct.

What's probably not correct is that the examples you posted are very simply two cases of a mixed cabin award ticket. The 80.000 one has only business class availability on the long-haul leg on BR (65000 miles) and then the system books the economy award space for the intra-European leg (15.000 miles), because, well, that's what you're asking for (whereas asking for business class the whole way books the available award space for the same cabin class all the way and prices it as a single award at 65k total). The 70.000 one has economy class availability on the long-haul leg (45.000 miles) and only business class availability on the short-haul one (25.000).

In fact, if there's a "married segments" issue, which is what you emphasized, then award availability for the 2-segment one-way will be zero and you won't get any options to show up at all. The only case I've come across during my extensive searches for award tickets, where a one-way award with 2 segments prices as two separate one-ways is when you're attempting to fly "the wrong way" (say Asia to Europe via north America or vise versa etc.).

Had you expanded the options for economy class as suggested and actually selected the ticket (clicked on the 80.000/70.000 option) you would have seen the "important info" regarding the leg that doesn't have availability in economy class .

PS. BR075 is a great example of that "pit-stop" at BKK actually not affecting the total cost of the ticket, even when another flight is added (provided availability in the same class exists, like in your example the case with the business class ticket was, at the normal price of 65.000, despite basically flying TPE-BKK-AMS-VIE).

I can't find where to book an award ticket on their website.
Is calling the call center the only way to book a *A partner ticket?
Thanks!

after login, there isn't an option at the left column for Miles Redemption.

Any chance you're a member of someone else's together account without the right to redeem miles yourself? I don't really know what the options menu would look like in such a case (if for example the "Award ticket" option would be gone), but I know the head of the account can select for each member if they can redeem miles or not.

While looking for availability in Lufthansa flights I see many empty seats in the following days but very limited on return. Do they have a policy to open availability on few days before flight?

Lufthansa opens up premium seats 2 weeks before departure. I have seen some open earlier then that. If you want Y then it should be available from when the calendar opens.

Is it still the case that redemptions on TK and UA can still only be made over the phone?

Yes it says so on the awards booking web page. You also have to check for availability on a different *A program website.

Is there a *A programme booking tool that can be considered as being generally accurate as regards what A3 can actually book? More interested in UA than in TK redemptions. And I'm assuming that UA's programme gives greater award space for its own members...

UA will show expensive extra space to their members. Air Canadas Aeroplan is good. That is if you know rough dates you are interested in and it isn't a year out.
