Press Release - Air New Zealands Record Domestic Sale

Air New Zealand has broken its domestic online one-day fare sales record.

General Manager Internet Nicki Garraway said the 24-hour $49 fare sale, which started at midnight, has exceeded Air New Zealands expectations.

There has been an absolute frenzy on-line that even saw us selling one domestic fare every three seconds between 0900-1000 today. Weve been blown away by the response from customers, Ms Garraway said.

We had hoped to sell around 10,000 fares by midnight but had surpassed that by lunchtime and look on track to sell as many as 13,500 fares, she said.

The sale offers customers the chance to travel on all direct flights within the country for $49 per person one way from the 18th to 24th June 2007. The sale is scheduled to end at midnight tonight or when all these available fares sell out.

New low-cost airline chances slim, say analysts

Airline industry analysts are sceptical about the chances of a new low-cost airline starting up here after a United States-based aviation investor this week announced plans to set up a rival domestic airline called KiwiJet.

Air New Zealand investors were unfazed yesterday and the company's shares rose to a fresh high of $2.85 on news it was also considering launching a low-cost carrier.

Staff were told in a memo leaked to the media that a low-cost carrier was one of three or four growth initiatives being considered by the company as part of a strategic review.

Forsyth Barr aviation analyst Rob Mercer said he believed Air NZ could successfully run a low-cost brand alongside existing services and grow the market....

Travel agent welcomes new airline

One of New Zealand's biggest travel agents says another domestic airline would drive down fares and increase flight availability.

Flight Centre's executive general manager Rick Hamilton was commenting on the proposed new budget airline Kiwijet, which he said would be good news for travellers.

"More competition in any market can only be a good thing for consumers, and we hope to see increased availability and lower fares as a result."...

Chch airport expects $1b sales from terminal

Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) expects $1 billion in sales at its new terminal over five years as CIAL and retailers rake in more money from passengers.

Chief executive Rene Bakx said he wanted the continuing $200 million terminal redevelopment to reflect "the best" the South Island had to offer while pumping up the economy with the $1b spend up.

The figure reflect sales over the next five to seven years, not just to CIAL but to other business operators benefiting as passengers through the airport continue to hit record levels.

Plane stranding shows MPs' advantages

Four National MPs stranded at Ohakea air base after an emergency plane landing had one luxury other passengers did not - taxpayer-funded taxi chits, which they used for a $360 drive back to Wellington.

The Ohakea saga has been revealed as a tale of two political parties and how they worked to resolve the situation to their satisfaction - some of the Nats taxied off, while Labour MPs pulled strings within the Government to speed up a replacement aircraft.
...The National MP also revealed she and Mr Henare had reason to again reach for their taxi chits - issued to all MPs - yesterday morning when fog disrupted Auckland airport.

When told their 8am flight from Wellington to Auckland could not land, they decided to fly to Hamilton - and incur a $240 taxi fare to Auckland airport.

"I just couldn't take it anymore. They wanted us to wait in a holding area in Hamilton airport and no one knew what was going on. I was sick of being herded like some kind of quarantine animal." ...

From the above article

Mr Duynhoven rejected any suggestion that the presence of Labour colleagues influenced his actions: "It was a pragmatic decision. It helps to know someone to ring, but if any other passenger had been standing there with the right people and in those circumstances, the result would be the same."
Yeah right. Somehow I doubt if any pax not an MP or celeb rang Mr Duynhoven in the middle of the night they would have gotten the same result.

If you look at the quote it is totally contrary to the editorialising at the front. Especially the bit " It helps to know someone to ring, but if any other passenger had been standing there with the right people and in those circumstances, the result would be the same."...

Air NZ Plane Back In Service

The Air New Zealand plane forced to make an emergency landing on Thursday night is back in service.

An electrical fault and reports of smoke in the cockpit forced the Boeing 737, flying from Wellington to Auckland, to land at the Ohakea air base, just before 10 o'clock on Thursday night.

The electrical fault was discovered to be in a pilot's head set panel....

Ministry help 'limited to advice' in death cases

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters has confirmed the Government will not help pay the costs of bringing a dead New Zealander home from overseas.

He was commenting after questions were asked by National Napier MP Chris Tremain on behalf of the family of Cathy Marlow who was murdered in Britain.

Ms Marlow, 28, from Hawke's Bay, was killed in her London office in January, and her grieving family were saved from facing a hefty bill only when Air New Zealand came to their assistance....

Press Release - Kiwijet pleased by response to announcement

The Kiwijet Airline Company Limited has been very pleased by the overwhelming response regarding our announced intensions to develop New Zealands first true low cost carrier.

Beginning today our Christchurch automated call centre will be active for telephone inquires and additional updates at 064- 03-377-0807

We are quite flattered that Air New Zealand wants to launch a low cost carrier themselves. However we must point out that their corporate irresponsibility by making emotional statements that kiwijet had received confidential information is just foolish and improper. We strongly suggest that any further statement of this kind will prompt us to take immediate legal action against any parties that make such statements.

Kiwijet has been investigating this opportunity since November 2006. We can assure all concerned that our business plan has been well researched in New Zealand and abroad by airline industry professionals as well as financial consultants. Our research indicated that the model we announced is viable, and the fact that Air New Zealand made such a statement just validates our concept.

We have closely been tracking of the collapse of the Airline Partners Australia bid for the acquisition of Qantas Australia, and we will take a wait and see approach to the situation as the dust settles. Regardless we will proceed with our intentions to bid for the acquisition of the Jetconnect operation in New Zealand once we understand what if any shakeup will occur inside the corporate structure of Qantas Limited.

Our legal counsel has been instructed to draft a proposal for the acquisition of Jetconnect to the Qantas board which we will put forward by the first of June.

We also would like to thank the many supporters that have come forward to express their support for our planned service that will benefit the traveling public in New Zealand by bringing the cost of air travel to simple and acceptable levels.

Soon all kiwis will fly

We thank the people of New Zealand for their support.

Our website will be available from September so please check back for updates at www.kiwijet.net

Press Release - October takeoff for new regional services

Air New Zealand today announced a launch date of Monday 29 October for new regional services benefiting customers in Invercargill, Wellington, Tauranga, Christchurch and New Plymouth.

Air New Zealand Group General Manager Short Haul Airlines Norm Thompson says the new services reflect Air New Zealands ongoing commitment to regional New Zealand, and to making it easier for customers to travel direct to popular regional destinations.

In February the airline introduced regular weekday services between Wanganui and Wellington; a second daily service between Wellington and Westport; and lifted daily services between Wellington-Taupo and Christchurch-Hokitika from four to five.

Mr Thompson says these services are striking a chord with customers wanting to fly direct into the larger regions in New Zealand.

We are committed to supporting regional communities and weve been delighted and very encouraged by the strong uptake for the services that we have recently introduced.

Were anticipating the same level of support and enthusiasm for the new regional services were launching on 29 October.

As previously announced, Air New Zealand will introduce new non-stop routes between Invercargill and Wellington (six flights a week), a weekday flight between Tauranga and Christchurch, and a weekday flight between New Plymouth and Christchurch.

All these flights now available for sale - would be operated with the new fleet of Bombardier Q300 aircraft, which carry 50 passengers.

Mr Thompson also confirmed today that from 4 June customers in Christchurch and Hamilton will benefit from an additional daily service between the two cities.

From June, well be stepping up from two to three ATR trips per weekday on the Christchurch-Hamilton route, to meet the customer demand that were experiencing.

From January Air New Zealand will be introducing a daily year-round ATR service between Wellington and Queenstown. Historically this service has operated just in the July to September ski season.

Queenstown continues to be a hugely popular destination for tourists and holidaying Kiwis alike, and were confident the demand will well support a year-round service.

Air New Zealand also expects in January to introduce a primetime morning service between Wellington and Dunedin, using its ATR aircraft.

Mr Thompson says Air New Zealand will continue to review and adjust its regional schedule to meet the changing demands of its customers.

Flight schedules for the new services from 29 October:

Route Departs/Arrives

CHC-HLZ 1400/1540 HLZ-CHC 1610/1755

IVC-WLG 0630/0820 WLG-IVC 1640/1840

TRG-CHC 0955/1145 CHC-TRG 1240/1430

NPL-CHC 1035/1200 CHC-NPL 1250/1415

Newcomer Tiger could help Air NZ

Air New Zealand is likely to get a short reprieve from increased competition as a result of Tiger Air's entering the Australian market, analysts say.

Tiger Air announced last week that it would be based in Melbourne and could start flying within months. The Singapore Airlines-backed budget carrier is expected to fly between Australia's main eastern centres, and to elicit a strong response from incumbents Qantas and Virgin Blue.

Air New Zealand must be "absolutely delighted" about Tiger's move, which would distract Qantas and Virgin Blue from expanding internationally, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation's managing director, Peter Harbison, said....
