Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe said the airline intends to "open one new long-haul destination every year" and wants to increase its offering of round-the-world services.
It currently operates Auckland-London Heathrow via Los Angeles and Hong Kong and is starting flights to Vancouver this year. "We want to use our existing Auckland-Shanghai service to continue onwards to Europe," Fyfe told ATWOnline, adding that the number of ANZ passengers taking advantage of round-the-world services is increasing.
The airline is exploring using San Francisco as a gateway to Europe and is looking for new destinations on the continent "like Manchester or Munich," he said, "because our passengers want to have an airport in Europe with connections to low-cost carriers." ANZ has eight 787-9s on order and still holds purchase rights on 12 777-300ERs.

Emirates flies highest with Kiwis
Emirates is the country's preferred airline for international travel, a Herald survey of air travellers shows.
The Dubai-based airline, which began operating from Auckland less than four years ago, was given the top rating for its service, including value for money, comfort, food and drink, and entertainment.
Singapore scooped second place in the satisfaction survey, followed by Malaysia Airlines.
But it was not such a good showing for the country's national carrier, which came eighth out of 14 the airlines ranked.
"Air New Zealand's service is awful. They are clearly flying to make money and customer satisfaction is a low priority," wrote one person....

Air New Zealand said today online sales had surpassed $1 billion in a financial year for the first time.
It had budgeted for $1 billion of sales in the year to June but had passed the mark nearly a month early.

As Air Nelson engineers walk off the job from 6pm today, their union plans to appeal the Employment Relations Authority's finding that the airline has not been using illegal strike-breakers.

NZ Herald
NZ Herald
Auckland International Airport has been labelled greedy at an international airline conference in Canada.
The 600 delegates at the International Airline Transport Association's Annual General Meeting in Vancouver have heard that the airport companies for Auckland, Sydney, Hong Kong, Seoul and Johannesburg have returned profit margins of more than 40 per cent, while airlines have seen their cost saving measures wiped out by the increased costs airports are charging for landing.

Pacific Blue faces tough competition
Pacific Blue will have to find a new way to take on the might of Air New Zealand if it is to enter the domestic market, the Christchurch-based budget carrier says.
John Bartlett, the chief executive of the Virgin Blue-owned carrier, told a business lunch in Wellington yesterday that taking on Air New Zealand was difficult because it was a "canny competitor"....

May load and yield results
NZ Herald
NZ Herald
Air New Zealand's strong yield performance - which has helped the share price to record highs in the past few months - hit some turbulence in May as the airline had to offer cheaper deals on more seats to maintain passenger numbers.
May was traditionally a challenge and this year was no exception, the airline said as part of its monthly traffic update to the stock exchange.
"The strong yield performance evident through to April has not continued into May," it said, and there was "significant promotional activity" across all routes.

Mayor questions airport moves
Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey says speculation about a Canadian or Australian buyer for Auckland International Airport makes his push for a commercial airport at Whenuapai seem an "even better idea".
Mr Harvey questioned whether an overseas takeover was in the interests of Auckland. "Assurances by the Auckland and Manukau Council that they will not sell their shares could be reversed by new councils after the local body elections in October....
