New avionics big help at Queenstown Airport
Air New Zealand flights breezed in and out of Queenstown Airport yesterday with the help of new avionics technology.
However, low cloud again forced Qantas Airways to cancel and divert flights to Invercargill.
About 588 Qantas passengers had their plans disrupted with two flights diverted to Invercargill Airport and two flights cancelled yesterday, Qantas Airways corporate communications spokesman Duncan Wyllie said from Sydney....

Man on trial for trying to smuggle knives on a flight
A man is on trial at the High Court in Auckland accused of trying to smuggle knives on board a domestic flight.
Eden James Thomson is facing two charges of attempting to take offensive weapons onto an Air New Zealand plane travelling from Auckland to Wellington two years ago.
The case is one of very few prosecutions under the Aviation Crimes Act.
The Crown says Mr Thomson was caught taking a flick knife disguised as a cigarette lighter and a butterfly knife with a 9 centimetre concealed blade through a security screening point.
The defence says Mr Thomson did not intentionally take the knives onto the plane, but simply forgot to take them out of his bag.

Five diverted flights land in Invercargill
Visitors flying to Queenstown yesterday were forced to travel by bus from Invercargill after Queenstown Airport was closed due to fog.
Air New Zealand spokeswoman Tracey Palmer said five flights were diverted from Queenstown and Dunedin to Invercargill, affecting about 400 passengers.
These included one Boeing 737 redirected from Queenstown and two from Dunedin as well as two smaller aircraft, she said....

NZ orders 4 777-300ERs, all 777/787 longhaul fleet by 2012
NZ Herald
NZ Herald
Air New Zealand said today it is purchasing four Boeing 777-300 long-haul aircraft, and has options on a further three.
The four aircraft, due for delivery by 2011, have a list price of $1.1 billion, but were purchased at a discount, Air NZ chief executive Rob Fyfe said.
The purchases, in addition to the eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order, would extend the range, capacity and fuel efficiency of the Air NZ fleet, Mr Fyfe said.

Fight Erupts on Air New Zealand Domestic Flight
Midair brawl blamed on forgotten meds
6/08/2007 13:36:02
An eyewitness to a midair brawl on an Air New Zealand flight says the group continued fighting as the plane landed.
Wellington police were on the ground waiting as NZ 417 from Auckland came in to land. The plane was nearing Wellington when police say a 42-year-old assaulted the man sitting next to him. Police say it appears the cause of the man's agitation was that he had not taken his medication.
Passenger Ben Gaines says the fight started at the back of the plane between two men, but escalated as other passengers tried to stop it. He says the flight attendants could not do much as the men were quite big.
Mr Gaines says it is unclear what the two men were fighting about, or if they knew each other.
Another passenger says it was former All Black Ofisa Tonu'u who restrained him.

PM keen to clear the air on Government role in airport shares sale
Prime Minister Helen Clark strove yesterday - against a plunging Auckland Airport share price - to dispel fear of Government interference in an overseas bid for the strategic asset.
She insisted that any Government decision to approve or block a sale of more than 50 per cent of the airport to Dubai Aerospace Enterprise would be made under strict criteria for assessing foreign investments in sensitive land holdings....

Editorial: Wrong time for airport politicking
New Zealand has worked long and hard to present a welcoming face to much-needed foreign investment. Stable policies and pronouncements have been an integral part of that, whatever the make-up of the government. But recently, signs that are bound to trouble investors, present and potential, have emerged. First, there was the Finance Minister suggesting he may not be averse to interfering in the working of the Reserve Bank. Now, the Trade Minister says the Government agrees with local opposition to a deal under which Dubai Aerospace would take a controlling stake in Auckland International Airport....

Woman complained to airline over 'psychotic' passenger
Air New Zealand's security has been called into question with at least one formal complaint over its handling of an aggressive passenger during a domestic flight this week.
Former All Black Ofisa Junior Tonu'u and another man restrained the man by sitting over him as flight NZ417 landed at Wellington Airport on Monday.
Police have decided not to charge the aggressive man, 42, because he suffers from a mental condition and had not taken medication.
However, the Herald has learned the airline has received a formal complaint for allowing the man on a previous flight from Tokyo to Auckland despite the fact he was acting "psychotic' and "aggressive" moments before boarding....

Nathan Agnew
Nathan Agnew's colleagues at Air New Zealand describe him as an adrenaline junkie.
In his spare time, the airline's general manager of strategic development is either flying planes or he's jumping out of them.
Then when he heads back to work on Monday he's buying them, or rather, he's telling chief executive Rob Fyfe and the board of directors that they need to buy them.

Outbound delays follow LAX system crash
Airlines struggled to clean and refuel planes where passengers had been trapped for hours because of a computer crash, leading to additional delays Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called for an investigation as carriers dealt with the fallout from Saturday's computer crash, which stranded more than 20,000 inbound travelers in the terminal and on planes....
