Mixed message from tourism firm

Tourism Holdings has increased its trading profit forecast, but says its one-off costs this year will be much more than predicted.

Chief executive Trevor Hall said moving the CI Munro caravan and motorhome manufacturing plant from Otorohanga to Hamilton had been more difficult than expected, and other group restructuring moves had been moving more quickly than expected....

Mayor accuses airport company of foul tactics

Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey has accused the company that runs Auckland International Airport of using "foul" and dishonest tactics in a bid to help opponents of a second city airport.

Mr Harvey said he was staggered that Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL) had given $19,000 to the Whenuapai Airport Action Group, which he called a small ginger group opposed to having a commercial airport at the Whenuapai air base when the air force moved out....

Kiwis take flight

The aviation industry is being presented with enormous opportunities. Roeland van den Bergh explains.

EVER since South Canterbury farmer Richard Pearse took to the sky early last century and landed on a gorse fence, New Zealand aviators have had a can-do attitude that has built a unique industry.

The industry has its roots in agriculture and an economic need to transport people the length of a long, skinny and geographically challenging country....

No doubt NZ fare increases is the reason for the steep *A RTW fare increase in business class, despite the strong currency.

Oh well, increases the incentive to originate in another country.

Air NZ gets some lift

Air New Zealand is flying high again, which won't be a surprise to investors who follow companies in this most turbulent of industries.

Its shares have rebounded over the past 12 months, due to new management initiatives and a steady pick-up in all key operating measures, most notably on the Tasman and Pacific Island routes after recent capacity rationalisation. The new route to Britain via Hong Kong, which avoids the stresses of rigorous, exhausting anti-terrorist processing at US airports is also performing strongly.

Few investors seemed concerned at the failure of the controversial bid to operate joint Tasman services with Qantas which would have led to even bigger profits for both companies had the Australian regulator not ruled it out....

Explosives tests for carry-ons from June 2007

Minister for Transport Safety Harry Duynhoven has announced New
Zealand’s high aviation security standards will be further enhanced
with the introduction of new explosive trace detection equipment at
our international airports from around June this year.
“Luggage carried in the hold is already tested for traces of explosives. New state-of-theart
equipment designed to detect a wide range of explosives will be used for screening
international passengers’ carry-on luggage,” says Mr Duynhoven.
Explosive trace detection is a quick process that will be carried out on randomly
selected passengers once they have walked through the metal detector, and their carryon
luggage has been X-rayed. A swab will be run across a passenger’s travel documents
or luggage. The explosive trace detection equipment then analyses the swab for residue
of explosive materials. If any explosive residue is detected, the passenger is subject to
additional screening. Once cleared, the passenger is free to continue boarding.
Australia already has this (and has for quite some time).

Air NZ says cellphone policy business secret

Air New Zealand passengers will have to wait patiently for further announcements on whether they can use cellphones on planes.

The airline conducted a survey late last year to gauge the appeal of cellphone use and Internet or Web access on its aircraft, and to find out if passengers had any concerns.

Inflight entertainment manager Matthew Wood says Air New Zealand has decided to keep the findings secret and will let customers know when it is ready to talk. "This is getting into 'commercial stuff' and we can't share what our plans are. The commitment is to talk to our customers on a regular basis."

Air New Zealand may be waiting for United States satellite operator Inmarsat to launch its I-4 satellite, which will be capable of providing inflight Internet and cellphone connections to planes flying anywhere in the Pacific....

Air NZ computer fault causes disruptions at Auckland airport

Dollar blamed for fall in US tourists

The high dollar appears to be biting into tourism, with a 4.4 per cent drop in the number of American visitors arriving at Auckland International Airport in March compared with the same month a year ago.

Auckland airport's chief financial officer, Robert Sinclair, said the decrease, to just under 19,000 arrivals from the United States, was unusual.

"Our currency against the US is possibly part of the explanation."

Air New Zealand spokeswoman Tracey Palmer said passenger numbers from Los Angeles had fallen slightly year on year because of the airline replacing the Boeing 747 with slightly smaller 777s on the route....

Mount Cook Airlines to cut training costs

Mount Cook Airlines, owned by Air New Zealand, is buying a machine enabling it to retrain pilots at its own base in Christchurch rather than send them to Thailand.

The Mechtronix ATR flight trainer allows pilots to undertake all recurrent training in a fixed environment, instead of using a full flight simulator....

New Carbon Market Trades On New Zealand Time Zone

Being first in the world to see the sun gives New Zealand an edge in financial markets, according to a report presented to the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Minister for Climate Change Issues and Energy today by the Carbon Market Working Group.

This competitive advantage has given the new market its name: TZ1, for the time zone cornered by New Zealand.

Carbon credits are fast becoming an around-the-clock commodity. This is the way the rest of the world is going and New Zealand has to be there too, said Air New Zealand CEO and Carbon Market Working Group Rob Fyfe....
