Lots of sticky threads in this forum now. That means there are lots of resources to help get you started on your FlyerTalk journey!

Some content is probably duplicated or could be merged into other threads to reduce the number of stickies. Please feel free to post in this thread any suggestions you have on how to better organize the content. Also, please feel free to utilize thread wikiposts (either editing existing ones or creating new ones where applicable) to help organize content.

Your efforts to assist us are appreciated!

Flame-free threads elsewhere on FlyerTalk

The Information Desk forum is a safe and flame-free place for members (especially newer members) to post questions. It is also a good place for questions which do not easily fit in a single forum. However, if you know which forum on FlyerTalk is best suited for your question but don't want unfriendly responses, there are also a number of flame-free threads for program specific questions. They are often labelled "Newbie Lounge" but everybody is welcome to post questions there.

Adding location and program information to your profile

Click or tap one of the MyFlyertalk links that appear at the top of every page:

Click or tap the Edit Your Details link in the control panel that appears on the left side of your screen:

Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your location (airport code, city or country) and program information (if you have status, include that), along with any other details you'd like to share, and click/tap the "Save Changes" button:

You're all set!

Need to update post #3 (or #7 as I saw both numbers) for the AA Newbie lounge as it links to the 2014 version. Thank you.

Thanks for the heads up! I've updated that one, and the UA link as well.

Another new information desk resource!

We've added a Where to find information about... thread. It includes a wikipost with a topic index to help you figure out where to find information throughout the FlyerTalk site. It's a work in progress, so if you feel there's something missing, please let us know!

Hi, I am new to this blog, found it referenced on CC. I got hooked on it after 48 hours and then was listening to Judge John Hodgman and there was Jesse and Ty (sp?) and cracked up. Now to my questions, I need to know if there is a list of the acronyms used in the posts. I have figured out some on them but need to know what Y and J and F when posters are referring to the aircraft.
Thanks

Taking it to the Next Level & Local User Group

I wouldn't dare say that I have a handle on the basics but I am very curious about how to take it to 'the next level' in terms of building an appreciable (substantial?) miles/points balance and squeezing the most out of them.

Is there a FlyerTalk Local User Group for the Washington DC area? (Didn't see one here.)

Those "group" things in the forum software never took off.

DC people do get together regularly. You'll want to keep an eye on CommunityBuzz for talk about meet-ups and things. There's a very active thread in there called the "DC Happy Hour" thread or similar. It's just people meeting usually for dinner, but meeting people in person is one of the best ways to ask questions and pick up tidbits from knowledgeable people all while having a good time over some good food.

Wink Newbie. happy find!

I found this site and thought it was so great. Spent hours reading, trying to learn. So much I have no idea about but I'm sure I get it, one day. The acronyms are the hardest. I've figured out the airport hubs but everything else goes right over my head! Duh and Doe ("Doe" is one of Homer Simpson favorite saying) I can really relate to that guy! Every post I read so far I'm saying to myself "Duh..what?"
So the first time I find this site I was so excieted, then fell asleep reading and forgot to "Save" the address, doe! I was lucky one day while searching and came across it again. Yipeeee! That's my whole life story.

and welcome!

The acronyms and abbreviations get easier quickly. (FWIW [for what it's worth], I don't think most of us use shorthand to be exclusionary but rather because we type those things so often that the shorthand becomes much easier--and, in many cases, clearer, like saying JFK instead of "New York," which could be ambiguous with NY's three airports.)

If you go up to the very top of every FlyerTalk page, there's a blue banner, and on the right side, there's an option labeled "Help." Hover over that and a menu pops down. Inside that menu are two helpful things: the Glossary and the Airport Code Lookup.

That said, for airport codes (some of the more obscure ones still trip me up, like one I encountered yesterday: KOI, which turned out to be Orkney Islands, Scotland!), I usually find it easiest to just Google "XYZ airport code" and the answer is always in the top one or two search results.
