The first AA 787-8, N800AN, has been built; flight testing began 6 January 2015 with the article currently referred to as "BOE-817".

The initial 787-8 configuration is expected to be 28 J, 48 MCE and 150 MC.

Post 184 (sluggoaafa):

28 B/C, 48 MCE, 150 MC

...last word we had was the 787 is due on 'property' approximately 12/31. January will be tied to FAA. February getting a few more tweaks done. March will be first AA revenue flight.
(Post #186, JonNYC, has details for the 787-9.)

The All Things 787 Blog states American has 16 787-8s and 26 787-9s on order.

Post #157 states first passenger flights early 2015.

JonNYC depicts what the J cabin layout is likely here in post #260.

To keep things in some semblance of organisation, I've consolidated all of the 2012 threads on the 787 delivery dates, orders or delays into this thread. For reference, here are the threads I found from years past, along with their dates:

This is the count of 787-8's delivered. The production is up to x5 per month. You are correct that no 787-9's are under construction but Boeing suppliers are producing some of the fuselage sections of the 787-9.

Since this discussion does seem to come back every few months (for whatever reason ), I've decided to create a consolidated discussion. I've included just those threads that have come up this year to avoid stale information getting bundled into a master thread.

Here's some news today about the 787-9 component construction:

It looks like:

Final assembly of the 789 will be sometime in 2013, as well as certification flights.

First delivery expected in 2014 (to Air New Zealand).

The 787-900 is 20 ft / 6 m longer than the 788, will have a range of 8,500 nm / 15,000 km, and carry 250 to as many as ~290 passengers (as opposed to the 788 with 264 passengers maximum, as configured for ANA domestic service), not as many as the Airbus A350 competitor (the A350-1000 directly seems to target the Boeing 777-300ER).

Advantages include 20% fuel use reduction, cruise of mach 0.85, a higher pressure cabin / lower cabin altitude and greater moisture in the ambient air, as well as incremental improvements in passenger comfort and convenience.

Wasn't ever mentioned why AA decided to go with the 787-9 over the 787-8 other than more passengers?

Arpey and Horton haven't ever publicly said why AA wanted the 787-9 instead of the shorter 787-8, but my WAG (posted somewhere around here in the past several months) is this:

The 787-9 offers a lot of extra square footage without much extra fuel burn (longer tube doesn't produce much extra drag). Why is square footage one of the most important considerations? The trend toward lie-flat J seats. Passengers want more space in premium cabins, so the floor area has to expand.

The 787-8, IMO, will be a perfectly capable airplane but it is destined to be the 767-200 of the 787 family. Capable, but not ideal. Notice that although there are airlines that have converted some 787-8 orders into orders for 787-9s, none (AFAIK) have converted orders for -9s into -8s.

The extra floor area of the 787-9 compared to the 787-8 won't increase pilot costs. It won't increase (absent more passengers) the FA cost. That extra square footage won't increase maintenance or fleet service or gate agent costs. That extra space (essential for all those lie-flat "every seat gets direct aisle access" J class seats) costs a little more in acquisition costs, but doesn't increase operating costs.

Plus, several years ago, Boeing was saying that the 787-9 would offer increased range over the 787-8. Why buy new state of the art, lightweight, fuel efficient planes if the model you buy has a big brother that offers even more range?

Uh huh, so why isn't the fleet filling up with 737-900ERs (and later A321s)?

Not that I have found.

But you can use Great Circle Mapper for this function.

Certainly don't wish to hijack thread, but along the same line, anyone know when (date, city, flight) that the first 787 will be?

If you meant the first flight of AA's 777-323ER (the topic of this thread), then airlineroute.net is a pretty good source for that info.

http://airlineroute.net/2012/11/19/aa-77w-update5/

If you meant AA's first 787, then maybe late 2014 or perhaps early 2015. Nobody knows the date, city or flight number of AA's first 787 flight.

We don't know yet but I guess it will start on the top 767 routes - most probably long haul. That being said they will no doubt send it on a series of domestic flights first such as the trans cons.

AA 787... status?

Does anyone know what the status is of the AA 787 orders? I've googled it and I see where they say they have placed orders, but no sites are showing they have firm orders. In the statement released by AA they said they would be received between 2012 and 2018. If they have in fact ordered the 787, when can we expect to see them in service? I assume the 787 will be to compliment the 77w that are currently on order?
