Anybody know in more detail why UA863 canceled last night (1/28)? It says they had to take the plane out of service to address a technical issue

I was booked on the return flight back to SFO today.

Pretty wild adventure on UA35 from San Francisco to Osaka on February 2nd, where comms between cockpit and ATC/United stopped working and they had to resort to ACARS and then CPDLC text messages. Four hours and fuel dump later they returned back to SFO.

Full accounting here:

The last bit about catering is pretty amusing.

My first reaction was that they wanted to reduce catering to minimize turnaround time -- then I remembered it is UA -- Kirby probably called the airport directly to make sure no one would get two meals....

And those passengers that requested a meal later in the flight were SOL.
Passenger: I’d like my meal now.
FA: I’m sorry, we left it behind in the aircraft that went MX back at SFO.

Listening to LIVE ATC for SFO as we speak with both landings and departures on 10L

UA2 SIN-SFO went around* and is diverting to SJC and according to the pilot "UA2 going around again" so looks like maybe twice?

*UA2 was the 4th of 6 go arounds in a row

Looking at FR24 arrivals, and there are a number of diversions. JAL2, MU589 (both 77W) and AA76 (A321T) diverting to LAX! And Delta A319 from LAX diverting to FAT.

UA2 got lucky that it only diverted to SJC.

I was also tracking UA2 this morning — looks like they went around once at SJC before landing. So three total missed approaches !
