My interpretation due to this omission is that no points will be refunded if you voluntarily cancel/change a cleared upgrade.

That is my read as well. Requests can be cancelled, upgrades cannot. By definition, a skip waitlist request will be "confirmed" so there will never be a "request" to cancel; i.e., skip waitlist is always non-cancellable.

Not sure if I missed this - can I still gift my GPU (or now Points) to family? How does this work?

I always upgrade my in-laws, hardly ever use GPU myself.

I'd like to know what special *NEW* rules apply to GS members besides the normal clearing of upgrades into PN.

...

Yes, no change. You will make the request from your account.

The skip the waitlist option (new) is only available if you are on the same PNR

Not sure why to expect new GS rules but UA has never publicly stated any special GS rules, so would not expect that to change

I have an upgrade request (GPU) for a flight in May 2020 where the long haul segment is confirmed on Premium Plus and waitlisted for Polaris.

Assuming the Polaris upgrade doesn't clear by December, would the best action be to cancel the GPU and apply PlusPoints after the GPUs are converted to the new system?

This way I'd use only 20 PlusPoints instead of 40 if the Polaris upgrade never clears.

there go regionals and systemwides

seen the wonderful new "Plus Points" so called benefits? sigh.

So how is upgrading on LH and NH going to work now with this new system? In particular when waitlisting on LH?

This post was not clear at all...in the first part UAinsider says a same day change would drop the "request" and refund points. I thought points aren't pulled until you are confirmed?

What is being said is that if a request is made (not cleared) and you make a change, the system drops the request or a request can be pulled with a call in.

So everyone on this forum is clear...the above post was very particular on langauage of "request" and avoided "cleared". What is still not clear is if a cleared upgrade will be refunded if you voluntarily cancel/change a non skip wait confirmed ugrade? My interpretation due to this omission is that no points will be refunded if you voluntarily cancel/change a cleared upgrade.

I believe your interpretation is wrong. If you read my entire post that UA Insider was responding to I think it is completely clear. I asked about normal (not skip) upgrades that have cleared and the refundability of those points. While you can't cancel a confirmed upgrade, if you SDC into coach on another flight, or cancel your trip, the points ARE refunded. Since non skip upgrade points are only pulled on the confirmed upgrade, we weren't discussing waitlisted upgrades. We have our answer. Same as GPUs/RPUs today.

To summarize: UA Insider said "That's correct" in response to my writing: Although I could eat humble pie, 99% certain you get the points back for non-skip confirmed upgrades where you SDC or cancel.

Maybe the mod can put something in the wiki to clarify. You can SDC or cancel reservation with a normal confirmed upgrade and get the points back, but you can't downgrade to a lower class of service on the same flight. Skip upgrades nonrefundable unless IRROPS, etc.

It seems to me like it is pretty much the same system, except you can burn 2 GPU equivalents for economy -> business when you purchase a fare that isn't W or higher. You do lose the "refunding the entire GPU" if you have domestic segments that clear, but the international segment doesn't. You used to be able to apply a GPU, get the domestic upgrades, and then refund it completely if the international segment doesn't clear.

No change except (likely) when the points are pulled from your account.

Since UA would presumably have to buy the inventory from LH or NH, file this under "no way."

So the RPU's/GPU's for 2019 will convert into the new points system on 12/4 or will they convert sooner and be able to be applied towards reservations dates after 12/4? Asking because I am considering becoming some cheap international K/L fares around Christmas.

Boraxo Sep 24, 2019 3:30 pm

The “skip the waitlist” program Sounds like a big win for 1Ks at hubs. Normally we get shut out by GS as our RPUs never clear. Now we can just pay more (hopefully at time of ticket purchase). Also can convert old GPUs (worthless to me) to RPUs which may be more useful for those who don’t want to roll the dice on sitting in E+ for TATL or TPAC flights.

Will be interesting to see how this is managed as I would imagine that all those GS at hubs will not be happy if their CPUs are stolen by 1Ks using points.

It's supposed to convert automatically. You don't have to do anything.

Remember: If you don’t receive your highest-priced PlusPoints upgrade, we’ll credit back the difference of PlusPoints after you arrive at your destination — even if you placed your request with a Global Premier Upgrade or Regional Premier Upgrade before we converted to PlusPoints.

That's great! I missed that note, thanks!
