So the RPU's/GPU's for 2019 will convert into the new points system on 12/4 or will they convert sooner and be able to be applied towards reservations dates after 12/4? Asking because I am considering becoming some cheap international K/L fares around Christmas.

Pretty clear that stuff converts to points on 12/4

I wonder if this is the first stage of selling points as well, and eliminating CPUs.

So allowing Platinums to upgrade will potentially take more of the limited upgrades away - if its waitlisted, 1K will always win but if they snag one of the rare upgrades that are available in advance, 1ks won't have a chance. This and some of the smaller nickel and diming seems concerning.

So how is upgrading on LH and NH going to work now with this new system? In particular when waitlisting on LH?

No change; points will be deducted at application:

PlusPoints can be used on United, United Express and select United partners: All Nippon Airways (ANA), Lufthansa, and Copa. All upgrades on partner flights will cost 40 PlusPoints, and your PlusPoints for partner flights will always be deducted at the time of request

Currently you can use RPUs on COPA (important since until the Max comes back all they have is barco-loungers in J) but the new scheme lumps them in w. LH and NH. Would be nice to address that.

Hi bocastephen. Requalifying for 1K will not extend the expiration of any upgrade certificates (soon to be converted to PlusPoints). However, if you requalify you will get new GPU’s/RPU’s (if you qualify before December 4th) or PlusPoints if you qualify on/after December 4th, and those would have 1/31/21 expiration date.

To your other question, we give 1 GPU today for every 25k PQM or 30 PQS flown after reaching Premier 1K. That must be flown within the same program year you earned the status for, so it would not go beyond December 31st. With PlusPoints we will give the equivalent (40 PlusPoints) for every 25k PQM or 30 PQS flown after meeting requirements for 1K.

Shouldn’t that be January 31st, the end of the program year? Or am I missing something?

This is already possible. Mileage+copay awards already book into PZ and are open to anyone.

No, it's Dec. 31, the end of the qualification year. That statement is about earning additional points by accumulating additional PQMs. The counter resets on Jan. 1.

I foresee a thread in a few months: "How many PlusPoints do you have expiring on January 31, 2020?"

LangerhansCellHistiocytosis Sep 24, 2019 4:57 pm

What does this mean for GS? Presumably XN/X => PN still exists? Will this take 20/40 for RPU/GPU or will it take more points?

mauiUAflyer Sep 24, 2019 5:06 pm

My first thought was that this reminded me of the old upgrade "certs" (and later e-certs). Looks interesting, especially StW.
I wonder if we will be able to purchase additional points for cash, like we could purchase the old certs? (as opposed to say, UFC).

mrt88 Sep 24, 2019 5:18 pm

I wonder if the StW will be dynamic and directly tied to the upgrade fee we see today (the type that doesn't give you extra PQM, etc.). Doesn't Delta have upgrades available where you can pay with points instead of cash at some ridiculous redemption rate?

On LH/NH? Zero chance

No change except (likely) when the points are pulled from your account.

Where is that listed please? Not mentioned anywhere in the FAQs.

PaulMCO Sep 24, 2019 5:22 pm

Confused on what happens to already booked GPUs. Like using a GPU to upgrade form PE to Polaris. So if it clears after 4 December will I get 10 points back (since it takes 30 points PE-> Polaris)

Sorry, it looks like I was mistaken. It's actually no change at all from the current process: the points are pulled in advance, unlike UA upgrades.

This was always the case for RPUs - the changes simply mean that Plats might convert 2 RPUs (which are difficult to use by many of us hub flyers) into 1 STL (skip the line) upgrade PER YEAR. I doubt that is going to take too many seats out of the upgrade bucket for 1Ks.

Rather it is the GS who will have more reason to complain if 1Ks use their STL points to take F seats out of the CPU pool that would almost certainly have gone to GS on hub flights. STL could be great for 1Ks who don't want GPUs but value domestic upgrades.

It appears based on what UAInsider said in the other post that confirmed upgrades would still be refundable in the event that you end up making an itinerary change for the ticket, or canceling the ticket to reuse later.?

This makes 100% sense to me. UA does not want people gaming the system by confirming upgrades with certs and then cancelling because they realized they had a good chance for a CPU. Ditto for people who do SDC for the same reason.

By contrast, people who cancel a flight and rebook for a later date would normally get back their RPU - same should be the case with points. Most people don't postpone by days or weeks just to regain an upgrade coupon.
