I suspect there will be a rash of "skip the waitlist" requests for flights prior to January 31, 2020, as we all try to burn those points before they expire.

Lets see how much upgrade space UA will actually release and what our success-rate is going to be. Something tells me not particularly good.
December 4th to Jan 31st is going to be one big mess.

Some enhanced flexibility (and some reduced) and no more "free" domestic upgrades connecting to un-upgraded international; I can accept that. however, I too would second a 10 point option, especially given the value of 30pts.

That said, given that the domestic to International changes, how does that affect an MileagePlus mileage upgrade? Are those still "free", with miles being returned if the Polaris sector doesn't clear? Is that something that has been addressed?

That has been covered several times and also in the FAQ. Points are only deducted when upgrades clear. So if the short haul domestic leg clears and the Int’l doesn’t then they deduct 20 points only

I'm not totally clear whether we can still search and select these upgradable fares and confirm an upgrade with a GPU (now PlusPoints) right away or whether you would have to use 'skip the waitlist' feature?
I liked the flexibility to search for W fares and apply a GPU in the past to Asia routes (say EWR-NRT Polaris) and call in and book and apply the upgrade. I never booked a ticket where the segment would be 'waitlisted' as the chances of clearing were not that great and like to visit the Polaris lounge before my flight with a confirmed Upgrade.

I apologize if this question has been answered already but i've read many pages in this thread and can't seem to find the answer.
Thanks.

You can still search for standard waitlist upgrades where PZ is available (and thus confirmable at time of request). When launched, within flight search results you’ll select the radio button “Available only and Skip Waitlist”. This will pull back all available waitlist pricing as well as Skip Waitlist upgrades if they’re available. This information is also available on United.com/upgrades > Types of upgrades > Coming soon: PlusPoints

Right. I think this is a semantics issue and not a rule change. You can't currently "cancel" an upgrade on the same flight (though some agents have allowed a downgrade if the underlying economy fare code was still available). That won't change with points. But you have always been able to SDC or cancel the flight and get the upgrade back (I think of this as being very different than just cancelling the upgrade). Also, I just re-read the terms, and since they highlight the nonrefundable feature of Skip, my bet is normal upgrades with points will be treated as they are now. SDC or cancel and you get your points back. Clarification would be great.

Although I could eat humble pie, 99% certain you get the points back for non-skip confirmed upgrades where you SDC or cancel.

That’s correct. Same day change always looks for the original ticketed class of service. Correct that if you same day change to other flights, the request is dropped and PlusPoints would be refunded back when you arrive at your destination. We are not taking away your ability to call in and cancel a standard PlusPoints request as you could do with GPU/RPU; we are pointing out that you will not have the ability to self-serve a cancel online once a request has been upgraded. Skip Waitlist upgrades, however, are not refundable or re-confirmable on other flights.

I get that; I'm not asking about the new Points plus thing. I'm asking about using the actual MP RDM miles + copay upgrade, and whether or not the policy that currently applies to that (which is that the domestic leg doesn't trigger the cost of the upgrade) is changing with the new system.

Yes, I guess that's the 'unknown' part. Will PZ space shrink with the 'skip waitlist feature'. For the most part i've been able to find reasonable fares and apply GPU's as I have flexibility. I hope this continues.

We’re not implementing changes to upgrade availability as a result of PlusPoints, or trying to incentivize use of Skip Waitlist upgrades over standard PlusPoints request.

United Insider,

Will we have to call in to get our PP redeposited to our accounts after upgrade failures like we have for all of 2019?

By not deducting PlusPoints until an upgrade clears, we expect these types of issues to be less frequent and we’re currently working on improving refunds logic.

Hard to tell, honestly. Folks will be applying for upgrades all over but what we don't know is if RM is changing any fare class on that day. So someone like me with only a few GPU left will apply to everything possible. Doesn't really change the pool, since only one will clear (as I only have 1 left).

As I said in another thread before, I am happy that G class is eligible for upgrades.

Great feedback and we’ll take that back. We’re happy about G class fares too.

Two questions without clearly obvious answers, or maybe I am overwhelmed with too much information:

1. I have 6 unused GPUs expiring next Jan 31. On Dec 4, these will be converted to Plus Points. Will those Plus Points also expire on Jan 31, 2020, or will they be good for all of next year if I requalify for 1K by Dec 31, PLUS the new batch of 1K PPs I will earn after requalifying?

2. 1K can earn additional PPs for every 20,000 additional miles - so if I requalify for 1K on Dec 31, and I am a 1K going into 2020, do I earn more points every 20,000 miles flown in 2020, or do I need to requalify for 2021 first, get the new batch of 1K PPs, and THEN earn more PPs for every additional 20,000 miles flown in 2020? As an example, I earn 2020 1K status on Dec 20th. On April 20th, I earn 2021 status. Where do my extra points per 20K miles start from?

Hi bocastephen. Requalifying for 1K will not extend the expiration of any upgrade certificates (soon to be converted to PlusPoints). However, if you requalify you will get new GPU’s/RPU’s (if you qualify before December 4th) or PlusPoints if you qualify on/after December 4th, and those would have 1/31/21 expiration date.

To your other question, we give 1 GPU today for every 25k PQM or 30 PQS flown after reaching Premier 1K. That must be flown within the same program year you earned the status for, so it would not go beyond December 31st. With PlusPoints we will give the equivalent (40 PlusPoints) for every 25k PQM or 30 PQS flown after meeting requirements for 1K.

Will we still have the ability to use our own PlusPoints to sponsor upgrades for friends and family?

I forget where exactly it was covered, but yes. No change to current instrument use unless you're using "skip waitlist".

rch4u Sep 24, 2019 1:51 pm

UA Insider ...

When will United decide if a certain number of instruments (or now points) can be extended beyond January 2020 to April 2020, consistent with prior years? I believe in all recent years, I was able to extend the expiration of 2 GPUs.

Are you just not sharing that information now, or has United decided it will definitely not extend that courtesy this year, as it has in the past? If the latter, that is extremely disappointing. Thank you!

alternatively, I'm sure a lot of us would also happily take a rollover facility; even if it is just the 10 points that cannot be spent independently.

No word on extending 2 GPU (or 80 points) until 30-Apr-20.

But wait a second, I thought points never expire now at UA :p

It appears that not all points are created equally!
