What does this mean for GS? Presumably XN/X => PN still exists? Will this take 20/40 for RPU/GPU or will it take more points?

eric.chen3742 - my guess is “yes”. Also seems like UA is adopting the requirement that the high level elite member (1K / GS) be traveling on the same flight to use unique benefits. 1K/GS must be on the same flight to skip-the-waitlist / GS must be on the same flight to force T > XN / GS must be on the same flight to force a companion upgrade to Polaris, etc.

My first thought was that this reminded me of the old upgrade "certs" (and later e-certs). Looks interesting, especially StW.
I wonder if we will be able to purchase additional points for cash, like we could purchase the old certs? (as opposed to say, UFC).

mauiUAflyer - strongly suspect the next drop will be a rethinking of the co-branded Chase cards. MileagePlus’s structure meant it could not compete with UR but this changes that as a unique feature only earn-able from UA, PlusPoints, is now in play and one must go through UA to get it (i.e. you cannot convert UR into PlusPoints).

A revamped UA Club card (or new offering) must be right around the corner to win back customers who bailed from a co-branded UA card in favor of CSP or CSR. For example, re-branding the UA Club card to something like “United PremierPlusPlatinumPurchasingPlaticPurveyancePlusPointsPowerhouse Visa” with a $4xx annual fee.

Card could kick back 60 PlusPoints each renewal and 10 additional PlusPoints can be earned for every $10k of spend for anyone. By expanding what PlusPoints can be redeemed for (e.g. a UC membership for 60 PlusPoints, WiFi Sub for 30 PlusPoints, etc.) I find the potential offerings becoming very interesting, especially for the high level, high spending premiers.

But more importantly, it offers a meaning differentiation from the CSP/CSR that high level premiers would actually care about. Offering a 1K/GS a free checked bag and early boarding due (or even lounge access) - meh...they already get it. Offering the same 1K/GS the ability to earn more benefits redeemable for actually useful perks based driving more CC spend? Yeah, that would get my attention.

I'd be ok with that, back to the E-500 days, but in a different format.

cova and COSPILOT - that was my take as well; made a post in the initial thread commenting on that.

Personally I’d be all for the elimination of CPUs in favor of an e500 system (or something like where 1 PlusPoint supported an upgrade of 500m or less based upon the current CPU windows for Premiers). Would give a nod to AA for their system where PlatinumPros (their 75k level) and higher still get comped CPUs but Golds (UA Silver) or Platinum (UA Gold) would have to request and support their domestic upgrades with 500’s. IIRC AA Golds/Silvers earn 4 500 mile upgrade per 10k flown and have the ability to purchase more to top-off. Also of note is AA does not require a 500 to be used if the flight is 500 miles or less.

No, but I promise you that there will be GSes who will be absolutely certain that this is the reason whenever they don't clear, just as there are people who are certain that people are purchasing $19 upgrades that they're not being offered.

Don't forget all those credit card people causing the UC overcrowding.

Sounds like a good thing but after reading the thread this morning (Aussie time) I used 4 x GPU into PZ >0 space for June 2020

a bird in hand .........

transportprof Sep 24, 2019 10:08 pm

I already have trips with waitlisted upgrade segments, both before and after the Dec. conversion to points, and with both RPUs and GPUs on different bookings. Will the switch to points change anything about these wait lists or the ways that I would clear off of them?

villox Sep 24, 2019 10:22 pm

I have several GPUs sitting attached to award tickets which are waitlisted. Given the “manual” process agents are always telling me they have to use I wonder if I’ll indeed see these redeposited as points on Dec 4 since they haven’t cleared yet.

docbert Sep 24, 2019 10:38 pm

So with 13 RPUs and 4 GPUS left for the year I'll have 420 points come December. Guess it's time to start looking for some long-haul confirmable flights with cheap G fares available as that's 5 G->J upgrades! Woot!

@J.Edward

I hope they do not do anything related to these PlusPoints with credit cards, this would be a HUGE devaluation for myself and others around the world who are ineligible to get the CC's (USA only)

scracer14 Sep 24, 2019 11:12 pm

With UAs somewhat incompetent IT, why would they implement such a complex program. Seems it would have been easier to just eliminate RPU / GPUs and replace them with (upgrade certificates). 1 for domestic, 2 for International 4 for deep discount economy to polaris etc.

Also fascinated by the "points phenomina" where people seem to be attracted to high point values. Maybe 1 credit card offers 10 points per dollar spent, valued at 1/10th of a cent and another offers 1 point per dollar values at 1 cent per point. Maybe that has something to do with it? "If I fly 25K more miles, I get 40!!! more points!!!", instead of, "Eh, maybe I fly AA or DL, what's 1 more GPU..."

Overall like the change, but imagine glitches galore due to the unnecessary complexity.. .

I'll trade you my credit card eligibility for your automatic PQD waiver. ;)

You took the words right out of my mouth!
Now that is something I would like to see disappear.

Yes.
PlusPoints can be used on United, United Express and select United partners: All Nippon Airways (ANA), Lufthansa, and Copa. All upgrades on partner flights will cost 40 PlusPoints, and your PlusPoints for partner flights will always be deducted at the time of request.

Not TAP or Air Canada?

Do GS receive anything above that for 1K?

No. This is no different than the current system.

Nearly every GS benefit is unpublished, so I wouldn't expect there to be any GS-specific benefits listed. I'm sure PlusPoints (+P?) upgrades will clear into PN, not PZ, when coming from a GS account. It's possible that Skip the Waitlist will work differently for GS members, although we'll probably have to wait and see. Although it hasn't been confirmed, the expectation is that X->PN upgrades will be at the 40 +P level -- equivalent to one GPU today.

I wonder how non-revs are taking this? This will definitely be affecting them now that even Plats can waitlist for long haul!

More +Points?

Majority will probably get stuck on the waitlist or lose 20 points when a random shorter flight clears.

So... If I travel SAN-LAX-EWR, for instance, and I clear the 20 min flight from San Diego to Los Angeles but not the 5 hr LA to New Jersey, I am on the hook for 20 points -- an old RPU. Right?

Wowzers...
