FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: WineCountryUA
This is the archive thread, the active thread is Lufthansa GPUs Go Electronic (How to use, will it clear?, issues w/flight credit,...)

For general information on upgrading ANA or Lufthansa flights with a GPU, see Upgrading Flights Operated by ANA or Lufthansa. You actually request the upgrade through the online form, here: Request a GPU for a Select Partner Airline.

Per United web support, you only need to fill in the required* info.

**The LH flight you are upgrading must be an LH flight, not a UA codeshare flight. If you have a UA codeshare flight, you can call websupport and they will (put you on hold and] change your itinerary to one with an LH flight#.

Note that UA websupport might give you a new ticket # when you do the above, but if the original ticket # was 016 UA stock, it will remain so, and thus you will still be earning RDMs at the UA rate (11x for a 1K), not the *A rate. In case of a $6000 biz fare for LAX-FRA that you are trying to upgrade to F for example, as a 1K you would earn 66,000 UA RDM if booked as a UA flight. And even though after booking you get them to change the UA flight # from a UA codeshare flight to an LH flight, the 016 ticket stock sticks, and you earn 66,000 RDMs.

(FYI, had the ticket stock been an LH stock, the RDM's earned would be 5790 miles x 150% = 8685 RDMs. Big difference)

Note that sometimes the online upgrading does not work, and you may get an error message to call an 877 number, which is now defunct but still resides on .bomb...Ignore it and just call web support. They might put you on hold while they call LH but they will get the job done.

Eligible Economy Fares to Apply a GPU

Upgradeable to business fares include U/H/Q the lowest eligible economy fares. G&E the two top premium economy fares and Y/B/M the most expensive economy fares. (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/24219165-post205.html)
While UA has not changed their T&Cs, LH appears to have expanded the potential fare classes

LH booking class P, Z upgreadable for miles and eVouchers
Appears this also applies to use of UA GPUs IF booked as native flight number on LH or UA ticket stock.
Presently UA is not converting codeshare to native flight numbers, as required for this process, if P or Z fare
From April to September 2018 it was possible to confirm and waitlist P ,Z-class LH flights with a GPU. Confirming and waitlisting is no now longer possible, but previously waitlisted segments will continue to clear as/if available.

Checking for Upgrade Availability

Upgrades to E, C and F come from the N, I and O fare bucket, but its a subset, which theoretically is not the same as the award subset. If awards are available it is a strong indication the upgrade is available too. (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/24861289-post342.html)

In case of upgrade clearing but eticket refresh problems:

The eticket helpdesk had to manually update the first coupon for the DCS to accept the coupon. My seat in C was safe, since the PNR was updated correctly, just the ticket was not updated completely to the satisfaction of the DCS. Everyone looking at the booking agreed the upgrade was legit, so you will not be denied boarding or downgraded, just budget enough time

Use ANA or even united.com to see availability.

To check if C/F upgrades may open up, ask in this thread: Determining LH Y/C/F loads? [the help me guesstimate loads thread]

Regarding ticket stock, Oliver reports:

A single GPU can be used to only upgrade a single LH flight segment, And that GPU cannot be extended to include another LH flight segment or another UA flight segment.

Problems getting mileage credit for upgraded LH segments

Numerous reports of denial of mileage credits (RDMs, PQMs, PQSs, PQDs) for upgraded tickets. This issue is probably due to LH uses the same fare bucket for mileage awards and upgrades. It seems patience, persistence, and documentation of the originally paid fare are needed to get credit.

You probably won't get credit by simply submitting the online form or asking a CSR to do so for you. A CSR needs to submit a System Issue Form, together with the mileage request, explaining that you flew in I class, but you paid for a mileage-earning booking class.

T-10

While the original system did not allow the upgrade waitlist to carry on past t-10 hours, the have been multiple reports that this is no longer the case. If not cleared in advance - the upgrade wait-list will last all the way until the door closing. UA has not updated the text on the LH GPU upgrades to reflect this change.

Did you by any chance book the ticket on govt travel and have to have the leg under United codeshare to comply with the 'fly America' restrictions ?

Nope, I did not. I booked it normally on the website on united.com so I could apply my GPU to the second UA segment as well. Wasn't sure if it would have worked the other way around.

Another data point:
LH779 SIN-FRA GPU applied about 25 days before departure as it was F5A0. 18h later it cleared. Biz to First, D fare ex ZRH, SEN status.

Well l am relatively new into the GPU game. Started in September 2018 and so far all my 3 GPUs cleared easily incl 2x SIN-FRA on popular Fr evenings.
On the other hand I still have LX e-vouchers on WL SIN-ZRH from even a C fare ex ZRH since 3 months.
Even if might not be true but I believe GPU clear ahead of e-vouchers.
In any case I am a big fan of those GPU ^ .

To plate on 016 stock, you either need to book the LH code by phone or book the UA code online and call immediately to have it changed to the LH code. UA-coded PE tickets in O and A are GPU-eligible for LH flights (after conversion).
Looking at booking IAD-FRA-DEL on United.com (doesn’t have to be). IAD-FRA is operated by UA and FRA-DEL is operated by LH. Want to apply GPUs to both legs: Economy to Business.

1) is it better to book this on United.com or Lufthansa.com? Don’t need PQDs.
2) is Q fare cheapest GPU eligible economy fare?
3) I can check that UA segment has space and will upgrade right away, is it possible to check if LH segment has upgrade space? Or, which segment has better chances of upgrade clearing.

Worked like a charm! Looked on expertflyer and found I space for IAD-FRA LH419 on March 25. Booked the ticket as a UA flight number and called to have it changed to LH flight number, which took 5 minutes. Then applied G{U online and went right through! Woo hoo!!! Love flying 747s :-)

What did you look for on ExpertFlyer to confirm GPU space?

It is discussed in the thread's wiki but I space for business and O for 3-class F are the best indicators (but not absolute guarantees).

1) Does not matter at all. Book whatever gives you the most miles
2) Yes
3) Check if I-class is available, that's a very good indicator it will clear. No 100% guarantee (like NH or UA) though.

Is it possible to purchase straight up LH (not UA stock) flights on 016 ticket? If so, how to book those?

016 is UA stock so no, you can't have LH issue 016 tickets if that is your question.
There is no problem converting UA flight numbers to LH flight numbers to apply a GPU; that is a simple call. So you can have all LH flights no problem as long as there are UA codeshares on it as well.
If you want a 016 ticket and have only LH flight numbers when first issuing the ticket ... that's difficult or rather expensive to do ... not sure why you would want to do this. Without a single UA flight number you are not using UA fares and depending on LH fares and plating restrictions and so on ... your price may be quite a bit higher ...

Cautionary seat reservation story with upgrade on LH

This may belong into the following thread, but its actually a more specific issue

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...id-j-ymmv.html

Dec 2018, LH797, no UA codeshare number on receipt/ticket, bought economy M class seat on united.com, 016 eTicket , 1508 PQD. Could (of course) not get seat assignment on united.com. Applied UA global certificate to flight for upgrade to business class. Waitlisted. Went to lufthansa.com to get an economy exit row seat just in case upgrade does not go through. Only got an error message on lufthansa.com. Called LH agent. She could also not assign seat. Escalated, failed: LH can not assign seat anymore with pending upgrade is in their system.

Went back to united.com, bought another ticket, went to lufthansa.com, assigned/paid for economy exit-row seat. Then put in another united global certificate on united.com. Cancelled first ticket.

lufthansa.com had me listed with two reservations for the flight up to me entering the plane (correct and cancelled one). Called UA in before and she said not to bother given how i had already received my refund for the cancelled ticket. I finally got my upgrade, so i had wasted the money on the economy exit row seat, but that was fine in my book.

Just got off the 1K phone line to reclaim with united the global certificate for the cancelled ticket. It had not come back automatically.

Lessons learned:

Get seat assignment on lufthansa.com before upgrading for LH flights.
Certificates for cancelled partner flights will not automatically go back (at least not in reasonable time).

To apply GPUs you have to ticket with a Lufthansa flight number anyway, so the ASR with code share is a non issue?
